No Response to Bidirectional Size-Based Selection in the Rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis

Malekzadeh-Viayeh, Reza,Song, Choon Bok The Korean Society of Fisheries and Aquatic Scienc 2015 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.18 No.3

Although rotifers have been considered the best feeding option for several species of fishes in aquaculture, they are sometimes larger than appropriate for the early larval stage of some marine fishes. Thus, we aimed to determine whether size-based selection of the parents could affect the average body size of their progeny in two clonal populations of the rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis. From each of the clones, 20 individuals were bi-directionally selected toward both smaller and larger sizes and each individual-based selection was conducted for 10 consecutive generations. The results showed that although there were sometimes differences in mean body size between parents and their progeny, no directional trend was observed in all selected lines of both clones. We demonstrated that artificial selection in a rotifer stock cannot lead to an expected size range although they appear to exhibit a large degree of body size polymorphism.

An integrated approach for structural health monitoring using an in-house built fiber optic system and non-parametric data analysis

        Malekzadeh, Masoud,Gul, Mustafa,Kwon, Il-Bum,Catbas, Necati Techno-Press 2014 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.14 No.5

Multivariate statistics based damage detection algorithms employed in conjunction with novel sensing technologies are attracting more attention for long term Structural Health Monitoring of civil infrastructure. In this study, two practical data driven methods are investigated utilizing strain data captured from a 4-span bridge model by Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors as part of a bridge health monitoring study. The most common and critical bridge damage scenarios were simulated on the representative bridge model equipped with FBG sensors. A high speed FBG interrogator system is developed by the authors to collect the strain responses under moving vehicle loads using FBG sensors. Two data driven methods, Moving Principal Component Analysis (MPCA) and Moving Cross Correlation Analysis (MCCA), are coded and implemented to handle and process the large amount of data. The efficiency of the SHM system with FBG sensors, MPCA and MCCA methods for detecting and localizing damage is explored with several experiments. Based on the findings presented in this paper, the MPCA and MCCA coupled with FBG sensors can be deemed to deliver promising results to detect both local and global damage implemented on the bridge structure.

A DQ nonlinear bending analysis of skew composite thin plates

        Malekzadeh, P. Techno-Press 2007 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.25 No.2

A first endeavor is made to exploit the differential quadrature method (DQM) as a simple, accurate, and computationally efficient numerical tool for the large deformation analysis of thin laminated composite skew plates, which has very strong singularity at the obtuse vertex. The geometrical nonlinearity is modeled by using Green's strain and von Karman assumption. A recently developed DQ methodology is used to exactly implement the multiple boundary conditions at the edges of skew plates, which is a major draw back of conventional DQM. Using oblique coordinate system and the DQ methodology, a mapping-DQ discretization rule is developed to simultaneously transform and discretize the equilibrium equations and the related boundary conditions. The effects of skew angle, aspect ratio and different types of boundary conditions on the convergence and accuracy of the presented method are studied. Comparing the results with the available results from other numerical or analytical methods, it is shown that accurate results are obtained even when using only small number of grid points. Finally, numerical results for large deflection behavior of antisymmetric cross ply skew plates with different geometrical parameters and boundary conditions are presented.

Higher order free vibration of sandwich curved beams with a functionally graded core

        K. Malekzadeh Fard 국제구조공학회 2014 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.49 No.5

In this paper, free vibration of a sandwich curved beam with a functionally graded (FG) core was investigated. Closed-form formulations of two-dimensional (2D) refined higher order beam theory (RHOBT) without neglecting the amount of z/R was derived and used. The present RHOBT analysis incorporated a trapezoidal shape factor that arose due to the fact that stresses through the beam thickness were integrated over a curved surface. The solutions presented herein were compared with the available numerical and analytical solutions in the related literature and excellent agreement was obtained. Effects of some dimensionless parameters on the structural response were investigated to show their effects on fundamental natural frequency of the curved beam. In all the cases, variations of the material constant number were calculated and presented. Effect of changing ratio of core to beam thickness on the fundamental natural frequency depended on the amount of the material constant number.

New enhanced higher order free vibration analysis of thick truncated conical sandwich shells with flexible cores

Keramat Malekzadeh Fard,Mostafa Livani 국제구조공학회 2015 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.55 No.4

This paper dealt the free vibration analysis of thick truncated conical composite sandwich shells with transversely flexible cores and simply supported boundary conditions based on a new improved and enhanced higher order sandwich shell theory. Geometries were used in the present work for the consideration of different radii curvatures of the face sheets and the core was unique. The coupled governing partial differential equations were derived by the Hamilton's principle. The in-plane circumferential and axial stresses of the core were considered in the new enhanced model. The first order shear deformation theory was used for the inner and outer composite face sheets and for the core, a polynomial description of the displacement fields was assumed based on the second Frostig’s model. The effects of types of boundary conditions, conical angles, length to radius ratio, core to shell thickness ratio and core radius to shell thickness ratio on the free vibration analysis of truncated conical composite sandwich shells were also studied. Numerical results are presented and compared with the latest results found in literature. Also, the results were validated with those derived by ABAQUS FE code.

Higher order impact analysis of sandwich panels with functionally graded flexible cores

        K. Malekzadeh Fard 국제구조공학회 2014 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.16 No.4

This study deals with dynamic model of composite sandwich panels with functionally graded flexible cores under low velocity impacts of multiple large or small masses using a new improved higher order sandwich panel theory (IHSAPT). In-plane stresses were considered for the functionally graded core and face sheets. The formulation was based on the first order shear deformation theory for the composite face sheets and polynomial description of the displacement fields in the core that was based on the second Frostig's model. Fully dynamic effects of the functionally graded core and face-sheets were considered in this study. Impacts were assumed to occur simultaneously and normally over the top and/or bottom of the face-sheets with arbitrary different masses and initial velocities. The contact forces between the panel and impactors were treated as internal forces of the system. Nonlinear contact stiffness was linearized with a newly presented improved analytical method in this paper. The results were validated by comparing the analytical, numerical and experimental results published in the latest literature.

Robust Control of Spacecraft: Application to an Actuated Simulator

Maryam Malekzadeh 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2018 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.16 No.2

In this article, a hardware-in-the-loop implementation of two robust controllers based on high-order sliding mode and m-synthesis method are performed and compared in terms of performance and functionality. The spacecraft simulator consists of a free-floating platform hinged on a spherical air-bearing support. The proposed scheme makes full use of adaptive super twisting algorithm to alleviate the chattering effects without increasing the control effort; both controllers are adapted to deal with the saturation of reaction wheels with respect to momentum and its rate of change. The ab-initio simulations compared well with the simulator responses, implying that involved instruments including actuators and sensors have been properly emulated. This also proved that the external disturbances were modeled in a reliable manner. The robustness and effectiveness of the proposed scheme have been validated experimentally under extreme circumstances and uncertainties.

Higher order static analysis of truncated conical sandwich panels with flexible cores

Keramat Malekzadeh Fard 국제구조공학회 2015 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.19 No.6

A higher order analytical solution for static analysis of a truncated conical composite sandwich panel subjected to different loading conditions was presented in this paper which was based on a new improved higher order sandwich panel theory. Bending analysis of sandwich structures with flexible cores subjected to concentrated load, uniform distributed load on a patch, harmonic and uniform distributed loads on the top and/or bottom face sheet of the sandwich structure was also investigated. For the first time, bending analysis of truncated conical composite sandwich panels with flexible cores was performed. The governing equations were derived by principle of minimum potential energy. The first order shear deformation theory was used for the composite face sheets and for the core while assuming a polynomial description of the displacement fields. Also, the in-plane hoop stresses of the core were considered. In order to assure accuracy of the present formulations, convergence of the results was examined. Effects of types of boundary conditions, types of applied loads, conical angles and fiber angles on bending analysis of truncated conical composite sandwich panels were studied. As, there is no research on higher order bending analysis of conical sandwich panels with flexible cores, the results were validated by ABAQUS FE code. The present approach can be linked with the standard optimization programs and it can be used in the iteration process of the structural optimization. The proposed approach facilitates investigation of the effect of physical and geometrical parameters on the bending response of sandwich composite structures.
