<P>New drugs are required to counter the tuberculosis (TB) pandemic. Here, we describe the synthesis and characterization of 1,3-benzothiazin-4-ones (BTZs), a new class of antimycobacterial agents that kill Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro, ex vivo, and in mouse models of TB. Using genetics and biochemistry, we identified the enzyme decaprenylphosphoryl-beta-d-ribose 2'-epimerase as a major BTZ target. Inhibition of this enzymatic activity abolishes the formation of decaprenylphosphoryl arabinose, a key precursor that is required for the synthesis of the cell-wall arabinans, thus provoking cell lysis and bacterial death. The most advanced compound, BTZ043, is a candidate for inclusion in combination therapies for both drug-sensitive and extensively drug-resistant TB.</P>

The article discusses the application of the IoT concept in the sensitive field of medical devices on the example of a developed prototype of a mechanotherapeutic simulator. Mechanotherapy is a complex of therapeutic, preventive, and restorative exercises conducted using simulators, specially designed for developing movements in individual joints. Mechanotherapy is used for the early and painless restoration of joint mobility, to prevent complications associated with prolonged immobilization of the injured area of extremities. Using the mechanotherapy simulator allows developing the joint painlessly, which accelerates the metabolism in the injured area, and soft tissues are restored to normal. The article provides information about the electronic components that ensure the wireless operation of the device and describes in detail the applied software as well as the client application for a mobile device.
Photophysical properties and photodynamic activity of octacationic oxotitanium(IV) phthalocyanines

The photophysical and photosensitizing properties of two octacationic oxotitanium phthalocyanines (TiOPcs), bearing pyridiniomethyl or cholinyl substituents, have been studied in aqueous and alcohol solutions. In water, both compounds were monomeric with the high quantum yields of fluorescence (${\Phi}_F$ = 0.17-0.19) and singlet oxygen formation (${\Phi}_\Delta$ = 0.4-0.5). The ${\Phi}_F$ and ${\Phi}_D$ of both phthalocyanines decreased with the increase of solvent hydrophobicity from water to ethanol. This effect was much stronger in alcohol solutions of the pyridiniomethyl-substituted phthalocyanine and probably results from aggregation of TiOPc molecules caused by association of chloride anions with phthalocyanine cationic groups. Evidence is presented that under illumination aqueous TiOPc solutions also produce hydroxyl radicals, which probably appear owing to photocleavage of water molecules. The quantum yield of OH formation was $(3-5){\times}10^{-5}$ after argon purging and twice as much in the presence of air. It is shown that irradiation of TiOPc solutions causes photobleaching of TiOPcs. The photobleaching quantum yield in water was found to be about $1{\times}10^{-4}$. The data suggest that photobleaching occurs owing to the reactivity of hydroxyl radicals, though singlet oxygen is generated by TiOPcs much more efficiently. The phototoxicity of the tested TiOPcs toward bacteria has been revealed. It is proposed that both OH and $^1O_2$ might be responsible for the observed bactericidal effects.

The abstract should concisely This study extends the theoretical framework developed by Roychowdhury and Watts (2007) by testing it on a sample of Kazakhstani companies and aims at investigating changes in relations between two measures of conservatism: asymmetric timeliness of earnings (AT) and the market-to-book ratio (MTB) over short and long periods. On the contrary to the recent studies that document negative relations between these two measures, we reveal that magnitudes of earnings response to good and bad news increase for cumulation over longer periods. Second, we observe positive relations between earnings response to good news and MTB at the beginning and end of the estimation period. Even though the authors of the framework have not found any support for positive relations on any combination of news and MTB, our results support their initial expectations about positive association between asymmetric timeliness and MTB. Interestingly, our findings document absence of conservatism for certain lengths of cumulation period which can be attributed to peculiarities of financial reporting system on Kazakhstani Stock Exchange.
수중 견인식 양방향 초음파 촬영기 영상의 고해상도 구현방안

본 발표에서는 수중에서 초음파 스캐닝 기법으로 영상을 취득하는 통상의 Side Scan Sonar platform에 대해 고품위 수중 영상을 취득하는 방안을 소개하였으며 특별히 Chirp Technology를 이용하여 성능이 향상된 양방향수중 초음파 촬영기에 대한 설계 개념 및 제작 원리를 설명하였다. 기존의 초음파 촬영기가 촬영범위(range)와 해상도(resolution) 측면에서 지속적으로 각각 발전해 왔지만 촬영범위와 해상도를 동시에 개선하는 데에는 한계가 있었다. 디지털 신호처리 기법이 발전하면서 공중파 신호처리에 적용되던 Chirp Technology를 수중통신에 적용할 수 있게 되어 넓은 촬영범위와 높은 해상도를 동시에 만족하는 양방향 초음파 촬영기를 개발하였다. 고해상도의 수중 영상을 얻기 위해 digital linear frequency modulation technique을 적용하였으며 신호처리 기법 및 속도의 발전으로 광역해저 고품위 영상을 실시간으로 취득할 수 있음을 확인하였다.
Antiviral peptide nanocomplexes as a potential therapeutic modality for HIV/HCV co-infection

It is estimated that 4 to 5 million people are currently co-infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). HIV/HCV co-infection is associated with unique health risks including increased hepatotoxicity of antiretrovirals, accelerated progression of HCV and liver diseases. The standard interferon-based therapy is effective only in about 50% of patients and often is associated with autoimmune and neuro-psychiatric complications. The treatment of co-infection (HIV/HCV) requires new strategic approaches. To this end, the formulations of an amphiphatic α-helical peptide, a positively charged analog of C5A peptide derived from the HCV NS5A protein, with a reported virocidal activity were prepared by electrostatic coupling with anionic poly(amino acid)-based block copolymers. The self-assembled antiviral peptide nanocomplexes (APN) were ca. 35 nm in size, stable at physiological pH and ionic strength, and retained in vitro antiviral activity against HCV and HIV. Moreover, incorporation of the peptide into APN attenuated its cytotoxicity associated with the positive charge. In vivo APN were able to decrease the viral load in mice transplanted with human lymphocytes and HIV-1-infected. Overall, these findings indicate the potential of these formulations for stabilization and delivery of antiviral peptides while maintaining their functional activity. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

<P>Building upon the success and relevance of the 2014 Magnetism Roadmap, this 2017 Magnetism Roadmap edition follows a similar general layout, even if its focus is naturally shifted, and a different group of experts and, thus, viewpoints are being collected and presented. More importantly, key developments have changed the research landscape in very relevant ways, so that a novel view onto some of the most crucial developments is warranted, and thus, this 2017 Magnetism Roadmap article is a timely endeavour. The change in landscape is hereby not exclusively scientific, but also reflects the magnetism related industrial application portfolio. Specifically, Hard Disk Drive technology, which still dominates digital storage and will continue to do so for many years, if not decades, has now limited its footprint in the scientific and research community, whereas significantly growing interest in magnetism and magnetic materials in relation to energy applications is noticeable, and other technological fields are emerging as well. Also, more and more work is occurring in which complex topologies of magnetically ordered states are being explored, hereby aiming at a technological utilization of the very theoretical concepts that were recognised by the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics.</P> <P>Given this somewhat shifted scenario, it seemed appropriate to select topics for this Roadmap article that represent the three core pillars of magnetism, namely magnetic materials, magnetic phenomena and associated characterization techniques, as well as applications of magnetism. While many of the contributions in this Roadmap have clearly overlapping relevance in all three fields, their relative focus is mostly associated to one of the three pillars. In this way, the interconnecting roles of having suitable magnetic materials, understanding (and being able to characterize) the underlying physics of their behaviour and utilizing them for applications and devices is well illustrated, thus giving an accurate snapshot of the world of magnetism in 2017.</P> <P>The article consists of 14 sections, each written by an expert in the field and addressing a specific subject on two pages. Evidently, the depth at which each contribution can describe the subject matter is limited and a full review of their statuses, advances, challenges and perspectives cannot be fully accomplished. Also, magnetism, as a vibrant research field, is too diverse, so that a number of areas will not be adequately represented here, leaving space for further Roadmap editions in the future. However, this 2017 Magnetism Roadmap article can provide a frame that will enable the reader to judge where each subject and magnetism research field stands overall today and which directions it might take in the foreseeable future.</P> <P>The first material focused pillar of the 2017 Magnetism Roadmap contains five articles, which address the questions of atomic scale confinement, 2D, curved and topological magnetic materials, as well as materials exhibiting unconventional magnetic phase transitions. The second pillar also has five contributions, which are devoted to advances in magnetic characterization, magneto-optics and magneto-plasmonics, ultrafast magnetization dynamics and magnonic transport. The final and application focused pillar has four contributions, which present non-volatile memory technology, antiferromagnetic spintronics, as well as magnet technology for energy and bio-related applications. As a whole, the 2017 Magnetism Roadmap article, just as with its 2014 predecessor, is intended to act as a reference point and guideline for emerging research directions in modern magnetism.</P>

The fauna of Kunashir Island and the islands of the Lesser Kuril Chain contains 47 species from 18 generaof Georissidae, Helophoridae, Hydrophilidae, Hydraenidae, and Elmidae. Two species (Enochrus vilis(Sharp, 1884) and Ochthebius inermis Sharp, 1884) are recorded for Russia for the first time. Fifteenspecies are new to the fauna of Kunashir Island and the Lesser Kurils. The article contains an annotatedlist of species, including the studied material and published records. The article is illustrated by photographsof habitats and species, maps of their distribution in Kunashir. The relationships between thespecies richness on an island area and the features of the fauna of Kunashir in comparison with Hokkaidoare discussed. The species richness of the studied Polyphaga families in Kunashir is almost 2/3 of thefauna of Hokkaido, while the island’s area is 55 times smaller. The reason for the absence of large speciesof the genera Hydrochara and Hydrophilus in Kunashir is hypothesized to be a restriction of the northernrange species boundaries by the July isotherm of þ16 S.
