Colorimetric Analysis of the Stability of Annatto Dye in Solution and Its Use in the Dyeing of Polyester Fibers

        A. M. Bueno,M. J. Gonçalves,I. O. Barcellos,C. K. Souza,L. F. Carvalho,R. B. M. Ibsch,B. R. Warmling,S. L. Bertoli 한국섬유공학회 2020 Fibers and polymers Vol.21 No.1

Due to the large amount of toxic effluents generated by the textile industry using most of synthetic dyes, naturaldyes are increasingly gaining prominence, in keeping with the global trend toward prioritizing the use of cleanertechnologies. However, the application of natural dyes is still restricted, mainly due to their instability in solution and poorfixation onto textile substrates. Thus, research is required to improve the performance of these dyes in order to obtainproducts with the characteristics desired by the industry. In this study, the potential of natural annatto dye in the dyeing ofpolyester (PES) fiber was analyzed and the color and stability parameters in solution were evaluated through twoexperiments. Initially, the stability of the natural annatto dye in solution was determined under different conditions oftemperature, pH, and dye concentration and the application of this dye in conventional PES fiber dyeing was investigated. Subsequently, the influence of the use of a carrier in the dyeing of PES fiber was evaluated. The results indicated that thevariables with the greatest effect on the degradation of the dye are temperature and pH. The natural annatto dye showed goodinteraction with the PES fiber in the conventional dyeing process, presenting good results of color yield and levels of fastness. In the dyeing processes conducted with and without a carrier, the dyeing performed in the latter provided better results, withthe advantage of allowing the application of lower temperatures.

Optimizing Ethanol Production by Thermotolerant Kluyveromyces marxianus CCT 7735 in a Mixture of Sugarcane Bagasse and Ricotta Whey

Priscila Gonçalves Ferreira,Fernando Augusto da Silveira,Raquel Cristina Vieira dos Santos,Hugo Leonardo André Genier,Raphael Hermano Santos Diniz,José Ivo Ribeiro Júnior,Luciano Gomes Fietto,Flávia M 한국식품과학회 2015 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.24 No.4

The simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process is a promising strategy to obtain ethanol from cellulosic biomass. In this study, sugarcane bagasse was supplemented with ricotta whey to increase the sugar, vitamin, and trace metal concentrations in the fermentation medium. The optimum conditions for SSF ethanol production from a mixture of sugarcane bagasse and ricotta whey produced by Kluyveromyces marxianus CCT 7735 were evaluated considering five factors: cellulase concentration, cellulosic biomass concentration, pH, temperature, and agitation. The highest ethanol yield was 49.65 g/L with a cellulosic biomass of 80 g/L, pH value of 5.05, agitation at 65 rpm and temperature of 39.2ºC. The results demonstrated that a mixture of the cellulosic residue of sugarcane bagasse and ricotta whey is promising for ethanol production because the ethanol yield in the mixture was higher than that in single substrate of sugarcane bagasse.

Numerical investigation of effects of buoyancy around a heated circular cylinder in parallel and contra flow

        Armando A. Soares,Nuno D. Couto,M. Duarte Naia,Norberto J. Gonçalves,Abel Rouboa 대한기계학회 2012 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.26 No.5

"Two-dimensional, steady, incompressible Navier-Stokes and energy equations are expressed in the stream function/vorticity formulation and solved numerically by finite difference method to study effects of buoyancy on fluid flow and heat transfer from a horizontal circular cylinder. The cylinder is exposed to approaching flow stream, for parallel (parallel flow) and opposing (contra flow) directions to the buoyant force. Two different thermal boundary conditions were considered at the cylinder surface: constant temperature (CT) and constant heat flux (CHF). The results elucidating the dependence of the flow and heat transfer characteristics on the Richardson number 0≤ Ri ≤2, Prandtl number 0≤ Pr ≤100 and Reynolds number 0 ≤ Re ≤ 40 are presented. Overall, for parallel flow regime, an increase in the Ri led to a raise in both Nusselt number and drag coefficient. However, for contra flow regime, these trends were reversed. For both regimes, the aforementioned behaviors were more pronounced for CT boundary condition than that for the CHF boundary condition."

Quality of biosafety guidelines for dental clinical practice throughout the world in the early COVID-19 pandemic: a systematic review

Soares Renata Cristina,Rocha Juliana Schaia,da Rosa Saulo Vinicius,Gonçalves Jéssica Rodrigues da Silva Noll,Perlas Condori Priscilla Lesly,Ribeiro Ana Elisa,Moysés Samuel Jorge,Baldani Márcia 한국역학회 2021 Epidemiology and Health Vol.43 No.-

OBJECTIVES: To conduct a systematic review of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related biosafety guidelines for dental clinical practice in the early stage of the pandemic, focusing on quality assessment. METHODS: Electronic (via PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature database, Brazilian Library in Dentistry, and Cochrane Library) and gray literature searches were performed for documents published up to May 12, 2020. Guidelines updated until April 17, 2021 were identified. Documents were included as guidelines if they (1) consisted of a set of statements, directions, or principles presenting current or future rules or policy; (2) were developed by government agencies, institutions, organizations, or expert panels; and (3) were related to the general conduct of health care activities rather a particular condition. Two researchers, using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research & Evaluation II, independently extracted the recommendations and evaluated the quality of the guidelines. RESULTS: Twenty-seven documents from 19 countries were included in the review. These documents presented 122 recommendations related to (1) professional biosafety; (2) patients’/companions’ safety; (3) the organization and biosafety of the physical dental facility environment; and (4) the work process in dental care. Overall, the scientific quality of the guidelines was considered low. Some recommendations presented in these guidelines would require further research to establish their effectiveness. CONCLUSIONS: We found a wide variety of biosafety guidelines for dental practice regarding COVID-19

Abstract

Gracilaria tikvahiae, an endemic western North Atlantic red alga, was cultivated for nutrient bioextraction in urbanized estuarine waters in Long Island Sound and the Bronx River Estuary, USA. This study assesses the feasibility of an integrated approach of using G. tikvahiae produced in this bioextraction system as sustainable biomass source for agar production. Agars were extracted after alkaline pre-treatment and characterized in terms of gelling strength, chemical composition, chemical structure and gel structure. Results indicated that this seaweed performed similar to other cultivated Gracilaria in terms of extraction yield and gelling strength of the agar. Differences between sites were not significant in terms of agar gel strength, though yield was higher at Long Island Sound. The extracted agars were sulfated, methylated and with no detectable pyruvate substituents.
