The effect of aging in air at 650℃ for 100∼1000 h on the tensile properties of superaustenitic stainless steel in the range RT-750℃ and the fatigue crack growth behaviour at RT and 650℃ was studied. Yield strength and ultimate tensile strength were almost the same between the as-received and the aged specimen. The fracture strain, however, decreased significantly from aging, and the fracture surface of the aged specimen at RT test was intergranular. The fatigue crack growth rate at RT is enhanced by aging at the high stress intensity factor range. This is due to the occurrence of an intergranular fracture in the aged specimen. At 650℃ the fatigue crack growth behaviour of both the as-received and the aged specimen was almost same with no intergranular fracture.
Modulus of elasticity of concretes produced with basaltic aggregate

Basalt is a type of volcanic rocks, grey to black in colour, contains less than 20% quartz, 10% feldspathoid, and at least 65% of the feldspar of its volume. Basalt is considered an igneous rock with fine grains due to the rapid cooling of lava. Basaltic rocks have been widely used as aggregate for various purposes. The study presented in this paper was carried out on basalts that are widespread in the Madeira Island of Portugal and that comprise the major source of local crushed rock aggregates. This paper discusses an experimental programme that was carried out to study the effects of basaltic aggregate on the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of concrete. For this purpose, cylinder specimens with 150×300 mm dimensions and prism specimens with 150×150×375 mm dimensions were cast. The experimental programme was carried out with several concrete compositions belonging to strength classes C20/25, C25/30, C30/37, C40/50 and C60/75. The Eurocode 2 indicates the modulus of elasticity should be 20% higher when the aggregates are of basaltic origin, however results showed significant differences and a correction is proposed.

<B>Abstract</B><P>We construct graph selectors for compact exact Lagrangians in the cotangent bundle of an orientable, closed manifold. The construction combines Lagrangian spectral invariants, developed by Oh, and results, by Abouzaid, about the Fukaya category of a cotangent bundle. We also introduce the notion of Lipschitz-exact Lagrangians and prove that these admit an appropriate generalisation of graph selector. We then, following Bernard-Oliveira dos Santos, use these results to give a new characterisation of the Aubry and Mañé sets of a Tonelli Hamiltonian and to generalise a result of Arnaud on Lagrangians invariant under the flow of such Hamiltonians.</P>
Searching for Brazilian serial killers’ home using a geographical offender profiling software

Geographical offender profiling proposes that it is possible to predict the likely area where serial killers live by analyzing where and how they committed their crimes. This information could be used by police to prioritize suspects and make better use of their resources. Based on findings from years of research on the field, a software was developed to assist in this endeavor: Dragnet. While there have been tests of this software’s applicability internationally, only one was conducted in Brazil but with a small sample. The present study sought to verify Dragnet’s accuracy with a larger sample of Brazilian serial killers. Data was collected from police and court records of two capital cities. The sample consisted of 66 serial killers whose crime location and home address were available. In 84.9% of the cases the offender’s home was within the area predicted by the software, and in 63.6% of the cases it was within the top areas suggested. While they show promise, these results are discussed as to how they could be improved and the importance of a qualitative analysis, considering factors that may influence offender’s mobility. Future research projects are suggested to address these issues.

[Purpose] Sodium bicarbonate shows ergogenic potential in physical exercise and sports activities, although there is no strong evidence which performance markers show the greatest benefit from this supplement. This study evaluated the effects of sodium bicarbonate supplementation on time trial performance and time to exhaustion in athletes and sports practitioners. [Methods] A systematic review was conducted using three databases, including 17 clinical trials. Among these clinical trials, 11 were considered eligible for the meta-analysis according to the criteria for the assessment of methodological quality using the PEDro Scale. Time to exhaustion was assessed in six studies, while time trial performance was evaluated in five studies. [Results] A significant beneficial effect of supplementation on time to exhaustion was found in a random effects model (1.48; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.49 to 2.48). There was no significant effect of supplementation on time trial performance in a fixed effects model (slope = -0.75; 95% CI, -2.04 to 0.55) relative to a placebo group. [Conclusion] Sodium bicarbonate has the potential to improve sports performance in general, especially in terms of time to exhaustion.
Effect of specimen geometry and specimen preparation on the concrete compressive strength test

This paper discusses an experimental programme that was carried out to study the effects of specimen size-shape and type of moulds on the compressive strength of concrete. For this purpose, cube specimens with 150 mm dimensions, cylinder specimens with 150×300 mm dimensions, and prism specimens with 150×150×375 mm dimensions were prepared. The experimental programme was carried out with several concrete compositions belonging to strength classes C20/25, C25/30, C30/37, C40/50 and C60/75. Furthermore, the test results were curve-fitted using the least squares method to obtain the new parameters for the modified size effect law.
