        Getting my tat on … and off: Consumer explanation of tattoos’ roles in presentation-of-self in everyday life

        This study explores the attitudes and behaviors toward the wearing of tattoos. The areas of interest and discussion include the motivations of tattoo patrons, the advertising and marketing strategies for tattoo parlors, the perception of people with tattoos, the perception of tattoos in the workplace, and managerial implications for tattoo parlors. The article also contains findings of exploratory research conducted by the authors, as well as an in-depth literature review. Both of these work to support the authors’ hypothesis that the complexion of tattoo wearing is changing.

        Immunohistochemical Study of Gliomas using Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein(GFAP), S-100 Protein, and Neurofilament

        37례의 신경교종에 대하여 면역조직학적연구를 시행하여 GFAP, S-100, neurofilament의 존재 유무, 분포 양상에 대하여 연구를 하였다. 일반적으로 2가지의 면역염색형태가 관찰되었다; perikayal과 diffuse backgroung staining. 3례의 회돌기교종을 제외한 전신경교종에서 GFAP가 양성소견을 보였으며, S-100은 전신교종에서, neurofilament는 반수의 경우에서 양성소견을 보였다. 상기의 소견으로 보아 GFAP는 성상세포에 특이하게 나타나며, S-100은 신경종표에 예민 하지만 특이하게 나타나지는 않는다. 또한 본 연구의 결과 다형종교아종(G.M.)의 면역염색의 형태는 성상세포교종 Grade Ⅱ, Ⅲ와는 다른 소견을 확인할 수 있었다. Immunohistochemical study of gliomas was maed using the indirect Avidin-Biotin Complex (ABC) method in order to investigation the presence and patterns of distribution of GFAP, neuro-filament, and S-100 protein in 37 cases of human gliomas. Generally, two immunostaining patterns were observed; perikaryal and diffuse fibrillary background staining. All of the glial tumor cases were stained positively for GFAP except for the 3 oligodendrogliomas. The S-100 protein was sensitive for all the glial tumors and for neurofilament, in about half of the cases. These observations support previous reports that GFAP is specific for astrocytes, and that S-100 protein is sensitive, but not specific for glial tumors. Furthermore, our data suggest that immunostaining patterns of G.M. is different from that of astrocytoma grade Ⅱ and Ⅲ

        A Study on the Presence of LH, FSH Gonadotropins in Intracranial Germ Cell Tumors

        두개강내 배세포종(Germ cell tumor)은 생식선자극홀몬의 기능조절의 중추적 역활을 하는 간뇌-송과체부위에 한정되어 발생하며 이러한 사실은 생식선자극홀몬(gonadotropin)이 이종양의 발생과 생물학적 형태에 깊은 관계를 가지고 있을 것으로 추정할 수 있다. 따라서 두개강내 배세포종에 생식선자극홀몬이 존재하는지 배아세포종(germinoma)과 비배아세포종성 배세포종(non-germinomatous germ cell tumor)에서 그 면역조직학적 활성의 차이가 있는지의 여부를 규명하기 위하여 본 연구를 계획하였다. 두개강내 배세포종 환자 14 예에서 얻은 배세포종 수술표본에서 monoclonal 항체를 이용한 면역조직화학적 방법으로 생식선자극홀몬의 존재여부를 규명하고 아래와 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1) 항체형성홀몬(luteinizing hormone, LH)과 낭포자극홀몬(follicular stimulating hormone, FSH)이 배세포종 표본 모두에서 검출되었다. 2) LH와 FSH는 비배아종성 배세포종에서 배아종성 배세포종에서 보다 더 강한 그 면역조직화학적 양성반응을 나타내었다. 3) 대부분의 배아종에서 LH는 음성반응, FSH는 약한 양성반응을 나타내었다. 이와같은 결과로 생식선자극홀몬은 배세포종의 두개강내 발생부위와 깊은 관계가 있으며 또한 배세포종이 더 악성인 비배아종성 배세포종으로 분화하는데 관련되는 것으로 추정되었다.

        Clinical effects of different prescriptions on the inclination of maxillary and mandibular incisors by using passive self-ligating brackets

        Objective: Controlling the incisal inclination is fundamental in orthodontics. However, the relationship between the inclination prescription and its clinical outcome is not obvious, and the incisal inclination changes generated by different bracket prescriptions were investigated. Methods: Twenty-eight non-extraction dental Class II patients (15 females, 13 males; mean age = 12.9) were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were treated using passive self-ligating fixed appliances with three inclination prescriptions for maxillary incisors (high, standard, low), and two for mandibular incisors (standard, low). Clinical outcomes were compared among different prescriptions, and regression analysis was used to explain the effects of bracket prescriptions and to understand the prescription selection criteria (α = 0.05). Results: For maxillary central incisors, low and high prescriptions were related to linguoversion (p = 0.046) and labioversion (p = 0.005), respectively, while standard prescription maintained the initial dental inclination. Maxillary lateral incisors did not show significant changes. For mandibular incisors, low prescription led to linguoversion (p = 0.005 for central incisors, p = 0.010 for lateral incisors), while standard prescription led to labioversion (p = 0.045 for central incisors, p = 0.005 for lateral incisors). The factors affecting inclination changes were the imposed change and selected prescription, while prescription selection was influenced by the initial dental inclination and initial intercanine distance. Conclusions: The direction of correction of incisal inclination can be controlled by choosing a certain prescription, but the final inclination may show limited consistency with it. The amount of imposed inclination change was the most relevant predictor of the clinical outcome.

      • Exploiting Diffusion Barrier and Chemical Affinity of Metal–Organic Frameworks for Efficient Hydrogen Isotope Separation

        <P>Deuterium plays a pivotal role in industrial and scientific research, and is irreplaceable for various applications such as isotope tracing, neutron moderation, and neutron scattering. In addition, deuterium is a key energy source for fusion reactions. Thus, the isolation of deuterium from a physico-chemically almost identical isotopic mixture is a seminal challenge in modern separation technology. However, current commercial approaches suffer from extremely low separation efficiency (i.e., cryogenic distillation, selectivity of 1.5 at 24 K), requiring a cost-effective and large-scale separation technique. Herein, we report a highly effective hydrogen isotope separation system based on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) having the highest reported separation factor as high as ∼26 at 77 K by maximizing synergistic effects of the chemical affinity quantum sieving (CAQS) and kinetic quantum sieving (KQS). For this purpose, the MOF-74 system having high hydrogen adsorption enthalpies due to strong open metal sites is chosen for CAQS functionality, and imidazole molecules (IM) are employed to the system for enhancing the KQS effect. To the best of our knowledge, this work is not only the first attempt to implement two quantum sieving effects, KQS and CAQS, in one system, but also provides experimental validation of the utility of this system for practical industrial usage by isolating high-purity D<SUB>2</SUB> through direct selective separation studies using 1:1 D<SUB>2</SUB>/H<SUB>2</SUB> mixtures.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jacsat/2017/jacsat.2017.139.issue-42/jacs.7b07925/production/images/medium/ja-2017-079254_0005.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ja7b07925'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
