This paper presents the development and application of electrical resistance imaging techniques for the visualization of two-phase flow fields. Two algorithms, the so-called mesh grouping and the boundary estimation, are described for potential applications of electrical resistance tomography (ERT). The results from extensive numerical simulations are also presented. In electrical resistance imaging for two-phase flows, numerical meshes fairly belonging to each phase can be grouped to improve the reconstruction performance. In many cases, detection of the phase boundary is a key subject, and a mathematical model to estimate the phase boundary can be formulated in a different manner. Our results indicate that the mesh grouping algorithm is effective in enhancing the computational performance and the image quality and that the boundary estimation algorithm is effective in determining the phase boundary directly. Especially, we successfully introduce a boundary estimation algorithm to determine the phase boundary dynamically when the phase boundary varies within the time to collect all measurement data required for conventional reconstruction algorithms.
