      • A study of subjective ratings for grip strengths based on target force levels

        Objective: The aim of this study was an analysis for accuracy of subjective ratings for target force levels (%MVC Levels) when there is no feedback of exertions for participants in this analysis. Background: Many studies of perceived force exertion about the static contractions have been conducted with using the Borg CR-10 scale for various levels of target force exertions (i.e., %MVCs). However, there was only few studies for how people correctly estimate their subjective ratings of the grip strength associated with target force levels under no feedback. Method: A total of 10 healthy males were asked to perform their maximum grip strength, and then each participant was also asked to evaluate the subjective rating with the random target force levels (10 ~ 90% MVCs). Results: As the target force level was increased, subjective rating was also increased. In accuracy of subjective ratings for target force levels, 30, 40, 50, and 90% force levels were accurately estimated by the subjective rating of grip strength. However, participants under-estimated for the 10% and 20%MVC, whereas over-estimated for the 60~80% MVCs, respectively. Conclusion: Based on the study of accuracy of subjective perceive ratings for target force levels, people showed under-estimation for the relatively lower levels of target force levels and over-estimation for the higher levels of target force level (90% MVC). Most participants estimated fairly accurate subjective ratings for the target force levels of 40~50% MVCs. Application: The results of this study may applied as for understanding of the subjective rating of grip strength pattern based on the various voluntary grip force levels.

        Nickel-Calcium Phosphate/Hydroxyapatite Catalysts for Partial Oxidation of Methane to Syngas : Effect of Composition

        Nickel-calcium phosphate/hydroxyapatite catalysts have recently been reported to exhibit high activity and selectivity in partial oxidation of methane (POM). In this work the optimum composition was determined. The optimum mole ratio of Ca/PO₄ was around 10/6 and that of Ni/PO₄ was in a range from 1.0/6 to 3.0/6 with the optimum Ca/PO₄, and the activity could be related with the amount of metallic nickel. In a temperature range from ca.400 to 700K, an apparent autothermal reaction was observed to occur in some cases. This is due to the fact that the actual catalyst temperature is higher than the measured temperature, which comes from the exothermic nature of the reaction. The mixing sequence of the precursors during the catalyst preparation does little affect the catalyst activity and characteristics. Deactivation of the catalyst occurred slowly, but the catalyst could easily be regenerated. Moreover, the nickel-calcium phosphate/hydroxyapatite catalyst showed higher activity than the nickel-strontium phosphate catalyst.

        Ergonomic Design of Medic Work Table (MWT) for Medical Technologist

        Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the guidelines for Medic Work Table (MWT) based on the anthropometric data of medical technologists. Background: Users’ anthropometric data such as sitting height, sitting elbow height, knee height, and so on are significant factors for designing comfortable and useful furniture. Thus, many guidelines for different types of desks and chairs based on the users’ anthropometric data have been suggested to many researchers. However, few researches have been conducted to provide design guidelines for MWT for blood collecting task. Medical technologists often use their upper extremities to perform blood collecting task with high repetitions. These repeated motions could be a critical factor in the prevalence rate of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs). Therefore, a study on ergonomic design of MWT would be essential in preventing the WMSDs and improving the quality of the working environment of medical technologists. Method: This study suggested design guidelines for ergonomic MWT by focusing on the heights of the upper side and underside, depths of the inside and outside, and width of MWT through anthropometric studies and literature reviews. Afterwards, a new MWT was made using the suggested design guidelines for this study. Five healthy medical technologists participated to evaluate the original MWT and new MWT. All participants took part in the range of motion (ROM) test, electromyography (EMG) muscle activity test, and usability test to validate the suggested guidelines in this study. EMG signals of related muscles (Flexor Carpi Ulnaris, Extensor Carpi Ulnaris, Deltoid Anterior, and Biceps Branchii) were recorded through the surface electromyography system from both the original MWT and the new MWT. The ROM test of the shoulder and elbow flexion was also assessed using motion sensors. Results: The newly designed MWT showed decreased ROMs of the shoulder and elbow up to 22% and 18% compared to the original MWT. The muscle activities in the new MWT also showed a decrease of 13% in Anterior Deltoid, 6% in Biceps Brachii, 5% in Flexor Carpi Ulnaris, and 8% in Extensor Carpi Ulnaris muscle groups, compared to the original MWT. In the usability test, the satisfaction score of the new MWT was also 56.1% higher than that of the original MWT. Conclusion: This study suggested guidelines for designing MWT and validating the guidelines through qualitative and quantitative analyses. The results of motion analysis, muscle activity, and usability tests demonstrated that the newly designed MWT may lead to less physical stress, less awkward posture, and better physical user interface. Application: The recommended guidelines of the MWT would be helpful information for designing an ergonomic MWT that reduces physical loads and improves the performance of many medical technologists.

        Association of<i>CYP2A6</i>polymorphisms with S-1 plus docetaxel therapy outcomes in metastatic gastric cancer

        <P>AIMS: S-1, an oral fluoropyrimidine, contains tegafur, which is converted to 5-fluorouracil mainly by CYP2A6. We evaluated the association between CYP2A6 polymorphisms and treatment outcome in metastatic gastric cancer patients treated with S-1 plus docetaxel. MATERIALS & METHODS: Chemonaive patients received S-1 40 mg/m(2) twice daily on days 1-14 and docetaxel 35 mg/m(2) on days 1 and 8 of a 3-week cycle. We analyzed the wild-type (W) allele (CYP2A6*1) and four variant (V) alleles that abolish or reduce enzyme activity (CYP2A6*4, *7, *9 and *10). A total of 50 patients were enrolled. RESULTS: The genotype frequencies were as follows: W/W (n=14, 28%), W/V (n=26, 52%) and V/V (n=0, 20%). Patients having fewer variant alleles had significantly better response rates (W/W vs W/V vs V/V=79 vs 65 vs 30%; p=0.04) and median progression-free survival (W/W vs W/V vs V/V=8.1 vs 6.9 vs 3.1 months; p=0.0009). CONCLUSION: Our findings showed that the CYP2A6 genotype correlated with the treatment efficacy of S-1-based chemotherapy in previously untreated metastatic gastric cancer patients.</P>

      • Quantification of Hand Functionality for Korean

        Objective: The purpose of this study is to quantify the hand functionality using the tracking task and investigate the difference between elderly and young group. Method: A total of 8 healthy adults (4 elderly and 4 young females) participated in this study to evaluate the effect of age, hand and target force level on the tracking performance. Participants were asked to exert a grip force attempting to minimize the difference between the target force and their exerting force. Results: The elderly group showed 28.4% larger tracking error than that of young group. This means that the age-related change declined the ability to control the grip force. It was noted that the difference of tracking error between age groups was more remarkable at the low target force levels (5, 15% MVCs). This means that elderly women had a lower ability to maintain precise forces than young group. Conclusion: Hand functionality could be quantified by using the tracking task. Effect of aging on hand functionality was found in this study through the tracking task. Application: The results of this study are conjectured to be applicable to physical treatment or rehabilitation.

        The p38 MAPK pathway is critical for 5,5&vprime;-dibromodiindolylmethane-induced apoptosis to prevent oral squamous carcinoma cells

        Cruciferous vegetables contain isothiocyanates including diindolylmethane (DIM) that exhibit cancer chemopreventive effects. We developed a series of synthetic ring-substituted DIM analogs including 5,5&vprime;-dibromoDIM that exhibited better inhibitory activity in breast and colon cancer cells than DIM. In this study, we investigated whether 5,5&vprime;-dibromoDIM inhibits the proliferation of KB and YD-10B oral squamous carcinoma cell lines. 5,5&vprime;-dibromoDIM decreased the cell survival and inhibited the growth of oral cancer cells. Exposure of KB and YD-10B cells to 5,5&vprime;-dibromoDIM induced caspase-dependent apoptosis evidenced by poly-ADP ribose polymerase cleavage, accumulation of sub-G1 population, and nuclear condensation and fragmentation. In addition, apoptotic cell death was correlated with damage to the mitochondrial membrane potential through a decrease in the level of Bcl-2 protein expression. Mechanistic studies showed that mitochondria-dependent apoptosis induced by 5,5&vprime;-dibromoDIM was mediated by the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway but not the ERK1/2 and JNK pathway. These results highlight 5,5&vprime;-dibromoDIM as an important chemopreventive agent for the clinical treatment of oral cancer through the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway.

        희귀식물 가침박달(Exochorda serratifolia S.Moore)의 분포, 외부형태학적 형질 및 토양특성에 관한 연구<sup>1a</sup>

        본 연구에서는 희귀수종인 가침박달의 외부형태학적 형질을 재검토하여 기존 문헌 및 선행 연구와의 차이를 파악하였으며, 식물상 문헌 및 표본정보를 통해 국내 분포도를 작성하였다. 또한 토양의 이화학적 특성을 분석하여 외부형태형질과 토양 조건과의 상관성을 고찰하였다. 가침박달 자생지 토양분석 결과, 유기물함량 3.25-29.83%, 전질소함량 0.15-1.14%, 유효인산 3.0-156㎎/㎏, 치환성 K<sup>+</sup> 0.39-1.49cmol<sup>+</sup>/㎏, 치환성 Ca<sup>2+</sup> 2.48-38.07cmol<sup>+</sup>/㎏, 치환성 Mg<sup>2+</sup>0.77-18.29cmol<sup>+</sup>/㎏, 양이온치환용량 7.3-23.0cmol<sup>+</sup>/㎏으로 확인되었으며, 토양 pH는 4.6-7.1인 것으로 조사되었다. 대구 앞산 집단의 경우, 유기물함량, 전질소, 양이온치환용량이 가장 높았고, 화서의 길이가 길고, 꽃의 수가 많아 다른 지역에 비해 유의성 있게 차이를 나타냈다(P < 0.001). 또한, 집단의 유전적거리와 지리적 거리, 일부 외부형태형질의 차이를 통해 이들의 상관성을 확인할 수 있었다. 희귀 수종인 가침박달의 생육특성을 파악하고, 서식지 내 보존을 위해 외부형태형질, 유전적 구조, 생육상태, 식생구조, 환경특성 등 다양한 데이터의 종합적 고찰이 필요하다. This study reviewed the external morphological characteristics of a rare species, Exochorda serratifolia S.Moore, in South Korea through a comparison of its previous records. Also, a distribution map of this species was made using previous data on flora and voucher specimens. Furthermore, the soil characteristics of Exochorda serratifolia S.Moore was analysed in order to determine the correlation between external morphological features and soil characteristics. At the study sites, soil organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphates, exchangeable potassium, exchangeable calcium, exchangeable magnesium, cation exchange capacity and soil pH were found to be in the ranges of 3.25-29.83%, 0.15-1.14%, 3.0-156 ㎎/㎏, 0.39-1.49 cmol<sup>+</sup>/㎏, 2.48-38.07 cmol<sup>+</sup>/㎏, 0.77-18.29 cmol<sup>+</sup>/㎏, 7.3-23.0 cmol<sup>+</sup>/㎏ and 4.6-7.1 respectively. The soil condition surrounding the population of Exochorda serratifolia S.Moore in Mt. Ap-san (Daegu) was found to have higher percentages of organic matter, total nitrogen, and cation exchange capacity than the soil condition. of other populations. Moreover, the length of inflorescence and the number of flowers in this population were significantly higher than the populations studied in other areas (P < 0.001). We also identified a significant correlation between genetic, geographic distance and several morphological characteristics. A comprehensive review of various data on Exochorda serratifolia S.Moore such as external morphological characteristics, genetic structure, growth conditions, vegetation properties, and environmental characteristics is required to understand its growth characteristics and conserve this rare species.

        실습선 나라호의 추진력 상실에 따른 동적위치제어시스템의 성능 분석

        In order for the probe to perform ocean exploration and survey research, it is necessary to adjust the position of the ship as desired by dynamic positioning system. The dynamic positioning system of T/S NARA is applied to K-POS dynamic positioning system of Kongsberg, which makes maintaining the ship's position, changing position and heading control possible. T/S NARA is not capable of dynamic positioning if one or more propulsive forces are lost with DP Level One. However, it is predicted that dynamic positioning can be achieved even at the time of missing one thrust in a good sea condition. Therefore, we want to analyze the effect of each propulsion on the performance of dynamic position system. When one of the bow thruster and azimuth thrusters lost their propulsion, maintaining the ship's position, changing position and heading control performance were compared and analyzed. If the situation occurred disable from using the bow thruster, they can not maintain ship's position. Azimuth thruster was influential for the ship's position control and bow thruster was influential in heading control. The excellent dynamic positioning performance can be achieved, considering the propulsion power that will have a impact on each situation in the future.
