The Optimum Dietary Essential Amino Acid Pattern for Male Taiwan Country Chicks

        Wei, Hen-Wei,Kuo, Hsin-Mei,Chiu, Wen-Zan,Chen, Bao-Ji Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2009 Animal Bioscience Vol.22 No.8

The objective of this study was to estimate the optimum dietary essential amino acid pattern for male Taiwan country chicks. A series of experiments was conducted with chicks, 14 d of age, for 2 wks. A basal synthetic diet was established using a dose response test for all essential amino acids referring to the broiler requirements recommended by NRC (1994). Twelve chicks were sacrificed at the beginning to provide initial body nitrogen data, and every group of six birds received the basal diet or a diet with a deficiency in a single essential amino acid in twenty one treatments by intubation according to their daily metabolic body weight (MBW). Deposited body nitrogen was determined using comparative slaughtering. According to the daily intake from the limiting amino acid per unit of MBW and the body nitrogen accretion rates for every two deficient groups with the same limiting amino acid but at different levels, a corresponding straight line was computed for each essential amino acid to intersect with a horizontal line made by the body nitrogen accretion rate of the control group. The x coordinate of the intersection represented the daily requirement for growth plus maintenance based on MBW corresponding to the essential amino acid. The amino acid ratios can be considered as the optimum pattern of dietary essential amino acids. The results, expressed with respect to lysine = 100, were arginine 105, methionine 81, histidine 34, tryptophan 18, leucine 103, phenylalanine 135, isoleucine 69, threonine 65 and valine 79. This pattern could be utilized to compute the dietary requirements (g/kg feed) for all essential amino acids by multiplying by the requirement of a single essential amino acid cited from the literature.

Nitrophenyl Functionalization of Carbon Nanotubes and Its Effect on Properties of MWCNT/LCP Composites

        Nanda Gopal Sahoo,Henry Kuo Feng Cheng,Hongqian Bao,Siew Hwa Chan,Lin Li,Jianhong Zhao 한국고분자학회 2011 Macromolecular Research Vol.19 No.7

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were functionalized on their sidewalls with p-nitrophenyl (C_6H_4NO_2) to make MWCNTs compatible with liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) through a specific interaction with LCP. This study examined the rheological, morphological, mechanical, dynamic mechanical, and thermal properties of LCP in detail with a variation of the nitrophenyl-functionalized MWCNTs in the LCP matrix. A higher complex viscosity, storage, and loss modulus were observed in the nitrophenyl-functionalized MWCNTs/LCP composites than the composites with the same loading of raw MWCNTs. The nitrophenyl groups attached to the MWCNTs improved their dispersion and interfacial adhesion with the LCP matrix, which was confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). As a result, the incorporation of the nitrophenyl-functionalized MWCNTs effectively enhanced the mechanical and thermal stability of the LCP.

Energy absorption investigation of square CFRP honeycomb reinforced by PMI foam fillers under quasi-static compressive load

        Hao Zhou,Rui Guo,Kuo Bao,Haiyang Wei,Rongzhong Liu 국제구조공학회 2019 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.33 No.6

A type of hybrid core made up of thin-walled square carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) honeycomb and Polymethacrylimide (PMI) foam fillers was proposed and prepared. Numerical model of the core under quasi static compression was established and validated by corresponding experimental results. The compressive properties of the core with different configurations were analyzed through numerical simulations. The effect of the geometrical parameters and foam fillers on the compressive response and energy absorption of the core were analyzed. The results show that the PMI foam fillers can significantly improve the compressive strength and energy absorption capacity of the square CFRP honeycomb. The geometrical parameters have marked effects on the compressive properties of the core. The research can give a reference for the application of PMI foam materials in energy absorbing structures and guide the design and optimization of lightweight and energy efficient cores of sandwiches.

Effect of dietary supplementation of Bacillus subtilis TLRI 211-1 on laying performance, egg quality and blood characteristics of Leghorn layers

        Tsai Ming-Yang,Shih Bor-Ling,Liaw Ren-Bao,Chen Wen-Tsen,Lee Tsung-Yu,Hung Hsi-Wen,Hung Kuo-Hsiang,Lin Yih-Fwu 아세아·태평양축산학회 2023 Animal Bioscience Vol.36 No.4

Objective: TLRI 211-1 is a novel Bacillus subtilis strain. This experiment was to investigate dietary supplementation of TLRI 211-1 on laying performance, egg quality and blood characteristics of layers. Methods: One hundred and twenty 65-wk-old Leghorn layers were divided into four treatment groups for 8 weeks experiment. Each treatment had three replicates. The basal diet was formulated as control group with crude protein 17% and metabolizable energy 2,850 kcal/kg and supplemented with TLRI 211-1 0.1%, 0.3%, and commercial Bacillus amyloliquefaciens 0.1% as treatment 2, 3 and 4 groups, respectively. Both TLRI 211-1 and commercial Bacillus amyloliquefaciens were adjusted to contain 1×109 colony-forming unit (CFU)/mL (g), hence the 0.1% supplemental level was 1×109 CFU/kg. Results: The results showed that TLRI 211-1 0.3% and commercial B. amyloliquefaciens groups had higher weight gain than the other groups; TLRI 211-1 0.1% group had better feed to eggs conversion ratio than the control and commercial B. amyloliquefaciens groups (p<0.05). Bacillus subtilis supplementation increased yolk weight (p<0.05). In egg quality during storage, TLRI 211-1 0.1% had higher breaking strength than the control group at the second week of storage (p<0.05). At the third week of storage, TLRI 211-1 0.3% had higher Haugh unit (p<0.05). Hens fed diets supplemented with TLRI 211-1 0.3% significantly decreased blood triglyceride levels and increased blood calcium levels (p< 0.05). TLRI 211-1 0.3% group had lower H2S (p<0.05) and hence had less unpleasant odor in excreta of hens. Conclusion: In conclusion, supplementation with 0.1% TLRI 211-1 can significantly improve feed to eggs conversion ratio. TLRI 211-1 supplementation also can maintain eggs at their optimum quality level during storage. The study showed that B. subtilis TLRI 211-1 can be used as feed additives for improving egg production performance and egg quality.

      • Kinetically Blocked Stable Heptazethrene and Octazethrene: Closed-Shell or Open-Shell in the Ground State?

        Li, Yuan,Heng, Wee-Kuan,Lee, Byung Sun,Aratani, Naoki,Zafra, José,L.,Bao, Nina,Lee, Richmond,Sung, Young Mo,Sun, Zhe,Huang, Kuo-Wei,Webster, Richard D.,Ló,pez Navarrete, Juan T.,Kim, Dongh American Chemical Society 2012 JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY - Vol.134 No.36

<P>Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with an open-shell singlet biradical ground state are of fundamental interest and have potential applications in materials science. However, the inherent high reactivity makes their synthesis and characterization very challenging. In this work, a convenient synthetic route was developed to synthesize two kinetically blocked heptazethrene (<B>HZ-TIPS</B>) and octazethrene (<B>OZ-TIPS</B>) compounds with good stability. Their ground-state electronic structures were systematically investigated by a combination of different experimental methods, including steady-state and transient absorption spectroscopy, variable temperature NMR, electron spin resonance (ESR), superconducting quantum interfering device (SQUID), FT Raman, and X-ray crystallographic analysis, assisted by unrestricted symmetry-broken density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All these demonstrated that the heptazethrene derivative <B>HZ-TIPS</B> has a closed-shell ground state while its octazethrene analogue <B>OZ-TIPS</B> with a smaller energy gap exists as an open-shell singlet biradical with a large measured biradical character (<I>y</I> = 0.56). Large two-photon absorption (TPA) cross sections (σ(2)) were determined for <B>HZ-TIPS</B> (σ(2)max = 920 GM at 1250 nm) and <B>OZ-TIPS</B> (σ(2)max = 1200 GM at 1250 nm). In addition, <B>HZ-TIPS</B> and <B>OZ-TIPS</B> show a closely stacked 1D polymer chain in single crystals.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jacsat/2012/jacsat.2012.134.issue-36/ja304618v/production/images/medium/ja-2012-04618v_0015.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ja304618v'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
