Kim, Jinhwan,Lim, Kyung Taek,Kim, Junhyeok,Kim, Chang-jong,Jeon, Byoungil,Park, Kyeongjin,Kim, Giyoon,Kim, Hojik,Cho, Gyuseong Elsevier BV * North-Holland 2019 Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Vol. No.

Abstract

In this manuscript, we propose an algorithm based on an artificial neural network (ANN) for the analysis of the NaI(Tl) gamma-ray spectra with radioisotope (RI) mixtures to identify RIs and determine the relative activity levels of the identified RIs. The ANN was trained based on the spectra that were generated by synthesizing previously identified spectra from single RIs, considering the characteristics of the measurement environments, such as gain shift effects and statistical fluctuations in the spectrum. The proposed ANN was evaluated through several measured spectra that contained up to six certified reference materials for a quantitative analysis. We also evaluated the shift in the spectra due to temperature variations in the range of 0–50 °C and the low-count spectra with a one-second acquisition period. These results were compared with those from an ANN trained through simulated spectra to emphasize the importance of acquiring a high-quality training dataset. In addition, we show that complex low-resolution spectra can be accurately analyzed with the proposed ANN under various scenarios, in which the maximum root mean square error was found to be 2.8%.

New brush polymers with various numbers of bristle ends incorporating phosphorylcholine (PC) moieties are synthesized. The polymers are thermally stable up to 175 °C and form good-quality films with conventional spin-, roll-, and dip-coating, and subsequent drying processes. Interestingly, all these brush polymers, as a PC-containing polymer, demonstrate a stable molecular multi-bilayer structure in thin films that arise due to the efficient self-assembly of the bristles for temperatures <55 °C and PC-rich surfaces, and therefore successfully mimic natural cell-membrane surfaces. These brush-polymer films exhibit excellent water wettability and water sorption whilst retaining the remarkable molecular multi-bilayer structure, and thus have hydrophilic surfaces. These novel multi-bilayer structured films repel fibrinogen molecules and platelets from their surfaces but also have bactericidal effects on bacteria. Moreover, the brush-polymer films are found to provide comfortable surface environments for the successful anchoring and growth of HEp-2 cells, and to exhibit excellent biocompatibility in mice. These newly developed brush polymers are suitable for use in biomedical applications including medical devices and biosensors that require biocompatibility and the reduced possibility of post-operative infection.
Graphic Abstract
New brush polymers with various numbers of bristle ends incorporating phosphorylcholine (PC) moieties are synthesized.
Graphene oxide has unique physiochemical properties, showing great potential in biomedical applications. In the present work, functionalized reduced graphene oxide (PEG-BPEI-rGO) has been developed as a nanotemplate for photothermally triggered cytosolic drug delivery by inducing endosomal disruption and subsequent drug release. PEG-BPEI-rGO has the ability to load a greater amount of doxorubicin (DOX) than unreduced PEG-BPEI-GO via π–π and hydrophobic interactions, showing high water stability. Loaded DOX could be efficiently released by glutathione (GSH) and the photothermal effect of irradiated near IR (NIR) in test tubes as well as in cells. Importantly, PEG-BPEI-rGO/DOX complex was found to escape from endosomes after cellular uptake by photothermally induced endosomal disruption and the proton sponge effect, followed by GSH-induced DOX release into the cytosol. Finally, it was concluded that a greater cancer cell death efficacy was observed in PEG-BPEI-rGO/DOX complex-treated cells with NIR irradiation than those with no irradiation. This study demonstrated the development of the potential of a PEG-BPEI-rGO nanocarrier by photothermally triggered cytosolic drug delivery via endosomal disruption.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Lateral fl ow assay (LFA) is a popular diagnostic system used in point-of-care testing (POCT) due to its low cost and portability. However, LFA has limited sensitivity and detection limits, making it challenging to detect low virus titers. Preconcentration through nano-electrokinetic (NEK) techniques have been proposed as a promising solution to improve the sensitivity of LFA. Nevertheless, the acidic conditions used in NEK operations may reduce the specifi city and sensitivity of LFA immunoassays. To address these limitations, an integrated LFA kit, the NEK-enhanced LFA (PcNEK–LFA), has been introduced. This kit features a pH-controlled structure designed to facilitate sample preconcentration. Biomarkers and AuNPs are electrokinetically preconcentrated in the PcNEK–LFA platform to increase the concentration of the test line and Ag–Ab binding events, resulting in enhanced performance. The pH-controlled PcNEK–LFA platform was evaluated using salivary human chorionic gonadotropin beta (β-hCG) and COVID-19 Ag samples, achieving a preconcentrating factor of approximately 10 and a sensitivity enhancement of 55.42%, and a preconcentrating factor greater than 10, respectively. The pH-controlled PcNEK–LFA platform provides an eff ective solution to overcome the limitations of LFA for POCT. In addition, it improves its sensitivity and detection limit, signifi cantly enhancing the accuracy and reliability of POCT, particularly for COVID-19 screening tests. As a result, this platform may play a pivotal role in addressing current and future healthcare challenges, facilitating rapid diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common allergic disease, imposing large social and economic burdens worldwide. Atopic dermatitis is characterized by eczematous skin lesions and immunoglobulin E (IgE) hypersecretion. We investigated the role of JNK1 on the development of AD in mice. The vitamin D3 analogue MC903, a psoriasis therapeutic drug, was used to induce AD-like symptoms in wild-type (WT) and JNK1−/− mice. The symptoms of AD were less severe in JNK1−/− mice compared with WT mice. JNK1−/− mice showed less ear thickening and infiltration of eosinophils and mast cells in AD-like lesions than did WT mice when treated with MC903. MC903-treated JNK1−/− mice also showed significantly lower level of serum IgE, which was elevated in MC903-treated WT mice. Splenocytes isolated from MC903-treated WT and JNK1−/− mice were stimulated with anti-CD3 and anti-CD28 monoclonal antibodies. Splenocytes from JNK1−/− mice produced lower levels of T-helper (Th2) cytokines (interleukin-4 and -13) and transcription factor GATA-binding protein 3, and produced increased levels of the Th1 cytokines interferon-γ and transcription factor T-box expressed in T cells. Our results indicate that JNK1 plays an important role in the pathogenesis of AD and may be a useful target for therapies to ameliorate AD.

In order to improve signal quality of Hall Effect sensor, lot of methods has been tried. One of the main concerns in getting better signal quality is to reduce the noise in sensing system. Nevertheless not much improvement has been achieved. Hall Effect principle is widely being used in many kinds of sensors. Open-loop current sensor utilizing Hall Effect sensor is studied in this paper. Primarily it is necessary to make exact modeling of current sensor for noise reduction of open type Hall effect sensor. In the study, the temperature variation and core characteristic of current sensor are not considered. Generally the basic characteristic of the noise in sensing system is random. Hence in the study a stochastic control technique is implemented to reduce the random noise in open-loop type Hall Effect sensor. Remarkable reduction of random noise in the original noisy signal which is frequently being observed from conventional open-loop type current sensor is demonstrated both in simulation and experiment as well.

This paper is presented for the design of the thrust yoke for the spindle motors. HDD spindle motors are rotated by fluid dynamic bearing which consists of the shaft and the sleeve with the groove to generate the pressure. Because the thrust and journal clearances between shaft and sleeve is too small, around Bum and 2.5um, respectively, it is very difficult to design the bearing to come up to the disks to read and write the data. By the way, it is also so hard to overcome the load of the disks with only the thrust bearing. So, the paper is proposed for the trust yoke to come up to the disks considering of the force of the thrust bearing. In this paper, we proposed the thrust yoke with an unique fluid dynamic bearing in comparison with the motors without thrust yoke. Experimental results show the performance of the thrust yoke of the spindle motors for an HDD.
