Impact of litter on femur and tibial morphology, bone biomechanics, and leg health parameters in broiler chickens

        Khan Komal,Kaya Mehmet,Fidan Evrim Dereli,Kilimci Figen Sevil 아세아·태평양축산학회 2023 Animal Bioscience Vol.36 No.9

Objective: In this study effects of three types of beddings on broiler leg health and bone biomechanics were evaluated. Methods: A total of 504 male chicks (Ross 308) were randomly placed on three beddings (4 replicates/group; 42 birds/pen), zeolite-added litter (ZL), plastic-grid flooring (PF), and wood shavings (WS). On day 42, chickens were weighed, slaughtered, and samples (bone, muscle, and drumstick) were collected. Bones were subjected to leg health tests, morphometric measurements, biomechanical testing, and ash analysis. Results: Broilers in PF and WS groups showed higher live weight than the ZL group (p<0.001), and the incidence of tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) and varus valgus deformity due to distal bending was significantly higher in PF (p<0.001). Multinomial logistic regression showed that bedding has a significant (p = 0.038) contribution toward the development of TD. Tibial strength (p = 0.040), drumstick width (p = 0.001), and total femur and epiphyseal ash contents (p = 0.044, 0.016) were higher in the ZL group. Chicken live weight was correlated with tibial length and weight (r = 0.762, 0.725). Conclusion: Flooring and the type of bedding material directly affect broiler bone length, strength and leg health. Plastic bedding improves the slaughter weight of chickens on the expense of leg deformities, and zeolite litter improves leg health and bone strength.

Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer photocatalysts: synthesis, applications and future perspective

        Komal Poonia,Pankaj Raizada,Archana Singh,Narinder Verma,Tansir Ahamad,Saad M. Alshehri,Aftab Aslam Parwaz Khan,Pardeep Singh,Chaudhery Mustansar Hussain 한국공업화학회 2022 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.113 No.-

Effective degradation of low-concentration pollutants is a critical challenge during the water purificationprocess. The use of different chemicals can leave residue in samples that can impose potential ecotoxicologicaland adverse impacts on human health. Presently, Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers(MMIPs) have attracted much attention as the research material comprises a non-magnetic polymerand magnetic material for selective binding for target molecule and recoverability of catalyst via magnetism, respectively. This review explains the synergistic effect of adsorption with photocatalysis tounderstand their recognition mechanism and the possible interaction between the target molecule andMIPs. Then their common imprinting polymerization processes i.e., free radical polymerization andnon-free radical polymerization are briefly discussed with their respective advantages and disadvantages. In addition, this review highlights the photocatalytic degradation mechanism of photocatalyst cumadsorbent is critically discussed by comparing it with non-imprinted polymers. Finally, the applicationsof MMIPs in the removal or degradation of refractory pollutants, sensing, and recognition have alsobeen delineated. This paper summarises progressive future challenges of the technology that need tobe exploited for the preparation of the targeted catalyst.

Preventable Lifestyle Risk Factors for Non-Communicable Diseases in the Pakistan Adolescents Schools Study 1 (PASS-1)

        Ali Khan Khuwaja,Saleem Khawaja,Komal Motwani,Adeel Akbar Khoja,Iqbal Syed Azam,Zafar Fatmi,Badar Sabir Ali,Muhammad Masood Kadir 대한예방의학회 2011 예방의학회지 Vol.44 No.5

Objectives: The rising burden of preventable risk factors for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among adolescents is a major public health challenge worldwide. We identified the preventable risk factors for NCDs in adolescents. Methods: In a school-based study, pre-tested structured questionnaires were completed by 414 adolescents (14 to 17years) at six schools in three cities in Pakistan. The chi-squared test and adjusted odds ratio (aOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated in a multinomial logistic regression analysis. Results: Over 80% of the adolescents had unhealthy diets, and 54% were physically inactive. Most adolescents were exposed to passive smoking, and 14% were also current smokers. More than one-third of participants chewed betel nut,and one-quarter used oral tobacco. More girls were physically inactive (OR, 4.07; 95% CI, 2.69 to 6.17), whereas a greater proportion of boys were current smokers (OR, 2.17; 95% CI, 1.19 to 3.91), exposed to passive smoking (OR, 2.57;95% CI, 1.72 to 3.83), and using betel nut (OR, 2.03; 95% CI, 1.34 to 3.06). Only 3.1% of the participants were without any preventable lifestyle risk factor for NCDs, and over 80% had ≥2 factors. Co-existence of risk factors was independently associated with fathers being blue-collar workers (aOR, 3.57; 95% CI, 1.07 to 11.92) and parents not treating their child fairly (aOR, 5.05; 95% CI, 1.29 to 19.78). Conclusions: Most of the adolescents studied had preventable risk factors for NCDs. These results warrant comprehensive and integrated interventions to prevent lifestyle risk factors, and parents are front-line stakeholders.
