Previous studies showed working memory span predicted mathematical performance. However, it was unclear whether working memory span differed amongst children with poorer performances in mathematics (PM), English literacy (PL), or in both areas (PML). 150 Primary 5 pupils participated in the study. Assignment to performance groups was based on two standardised literacy measures and a mathematical problem solving task. Children scoring at or below the 25th percentile were classified as having performed poorly in that area. Working memory capacity was measured using the Working Memory Test Battery for Children. PML had similar working memory profiles as PL, but had lower scores than PM. Children classified as PM had similar profiles as did normally achieving children. These findings suggest children with difficulties in different topic areas may not benefit equally from working memory based intervention.
Mental Skill Training in High School Golfer: A Qualitative Case Study

The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of systematic mental skills training for a high school golfer. Based on person-centered approach, this programme was designed for a single subject who competed in the high school junior varsity level in the United States. Various mental skill training techniques such as concentration, relaxation, imagery, self-concentration, and goalsetting technique was employed for his performance enhancement. The results showed that the person-oriented approach can be an effective method for sport psychology consulting to help athletes develop their performance. This case study provides some possible guidelines for sport psychologists who may wish to provide consultancy services within high school golf.
Acute exacerbation of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis associated with air pollution exposure

<P>Acute exacerbations of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis are associated with high mortality and are of unknown cause. The effect of air pollution on exacerbations of interstitial lung disease is unknown. This study aims to define the association of air pollution exposure with acute exacerbation of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.</P><P>Patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and corresponding air pollution data were identified from a longitudinal cohort. Air pollution exposures were assigned to each patient for ozone, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide based on geo-coded residential addresses. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the association of air pollution exposures and acute exacerbations.</P><P>Acute exacerbation was significantly associated with antecedent 6-week increases in mean level, maximum level and number of exceedances above accepted standards of ozone (hazard ratio (HR) 1.57, 95% CI 1.09–2.24; HR 1.42, 95% CI 1.11–1.82; and HR 1.51, 95% CI 1.17–1.94, respectively) and nitrogen dioxide (HR 1.41, 95% CI 1.04–1.91; HR 1.27, 95% CI 1.01–1.59; and HR 1.20, 95% CI 1.10–1.31, respectively).</P><P>Increased ozone and nitrogen dioxide exposure over the preceding 6 weeks was associated with an increased risk of acute exacerbation of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, suggesting that air pollution may contribute to the development of this clinically meaningful event.</P>
As Long As the Drawing is Logical, Size Does Not Matter

The use of letters as a variable is one of the obstacles faced by students as they make the transition from arithmetic to letter-symbolic algebra. Primary students in Singapore are in a unique position as they are presented with opportunities, right across their primary years, to work with less abstract representations of numbers. These students are taught to use a set of proportionately sized rectangles to model arithmetic as well as algebra word problems. fMRI studies show that adults used similar processes in generating the rectangles and letters used to solve algebraword problems. How do primary students perceive these model representations? Ten primary 5 students were interviewed on a one-to-one basis after they had completed a series of mathematics tasks. The written and interview data suggest that these students’ familiarity with the model method had enabled them to construct a new meaning of how numbers could be represented. This finding may offer educators an alternative route to facilitate the transition from arithmetic to letter-sym-bolic algebra.

Background: Ethnic variation in tumor characteristics and clinical presentation of breast cancer is increasingly being emphasized. We studied the tumor characteristics and factors which may influence the presentation and prognosis of triple negative breast cancers (TNC) in a cohort of Chinese women. Methods: A prospective cohort of 1800 Chinese women with breast cancer was recruited in a tertiary referral unit in Hong Kong between 1995 and 2006 and was followed up with a median duration of 7.2 years. Of the total, 216 (12.0%) had TNC and 1584 (88.0%) had non-TNC. Their clinicopathological variables, epidemiological variables and clinical outcomes were evaluated. Results: Patients with TNC had similar age of presentation as those with non-TNC, while presenting at earlier stages (82.4% were stage 1-2, compared to 78.4% in non-TNC, p=0.035). They were likely to be associated with grade 3 cancer (Hazard Ratio(HR)=5.8, p<0.001). TNC showed higher chance of visceral relapse (HR=2.69, p<0.001), liver metastasis (HR=1.7, p=0.003) and brain metastasis (HR=1.8, p=0.003). Compared with non-TNC group, TNC had similar 10-year disease-free survival (82% vs 84%, p=0.148), overall survival (78% vs 79%, p=0.238) and breast cancer-specific mortality (18% vs 16%, p=0.095). However, TNC showed poorer 10-year stage 3 and 4 specific survival (stage 3: 53% vs. 67%, p=0.010; stage 4: 0% vs. 40%, p=0.035). Conclusions: Chinese women with triple negative breast cancer do not have less aggressive biological behavior compared to the West and presentation at a later stage results in worse prognosis compared with those with non triple negative breast cancer.
SOHIO process legacy waste treatment: Uranium recovery using ion exchange

The feasibility of employing ion-exchange resins for the selective removal of uranium from a complexwaste effluent has been investigated. The source of the effluent is a treatment process to reduce thevolume of a spent uranium containing catalyst prior to its immobilisation and disposal in South Korea. Commercial anion exchange and chelation resins have been screened, along with an in-housesynthesized polyamine functionalized resin. The Langmuir isotherm model produced the bestfit for UO22+ binding to all resins, with Purolite MTS957, a mixed sulfonic/phosphonic acid functionalised resin,showing the highest equilibrium adsorption capacity for UO22+, 96.15 mg g 1. The Modified Dose-Response Model was found to adequately represent breakthrough across allflow rates used and for allresins tested under dynamic testing conditions. The maximum uranium loading capacities underdynamic conditions for simulant and real wastes were established as 131.52 mg g 1 and 68.62 mg g 1,respectively. Purolite MTS957 effectively decontaminated the real effluent to uranium levels below theKorean release limit of 1 mg L 1. Over 99.9% uranium was successfully eluted from the resin bed in under20 BV with a mixed sodium carbonate/sulfate eluent.
Broadband dispersion-engineered microresonator on a chip

The control of dispersion in fibre optical waveguides is of critical importance to optical fibre communications systems and more recently for continuum generation from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared. The wavelength at which the group velocity dispersion crosses zero can be set by varying the fibre core diameter or index step. Moreover, sophisticated methods to manipulate higher-order dispersion so as to shape and even flatten the dispersion over wide bandwidths are possible using multi-cladding fibres. Here we introduce design and fabrication techniques that allow analogous dispersion control in chip-integrated optical microresonators, and thereby demonstrate higher-order, wide-bandwidth dispersion control over an octave of spectrum. Importantly, the fabrication method we employ for dispersion control simultaneously permits optical Q factors above 100 million, which is critical for the efficient operation of nonlinear optical oscillators. Dispersion control in high-Q systems has become of great importance in recent years with increased interest in chip-integrable optical frequency combs.
