Comparative study of thermal gelation properties and molecular forces of actomyosin extracted from normal and pale, soft and exudative-like chicken breast meat

        Ke Li,Jun-Ya liu,Lei Fu,Ying-Ying Zhao,Yan-Hong Bai 아세아·태평양축산학회 2019 Animal Bioscience Vol.32 No.5

Objective: The objectives of this study were to investigate the thermal gelation properties and molecular forces of actomyosin extracted from two classes of chicken breast meat qualities (normal and pale, soft and exudative [PSE]-like) during heating process to further improve the understanding of the variations of functional properties between normal and PSE-like chicken breast meat. Methods: Actomyosin was extracted from normal and PSE-like chicken breast meat and the gel strength, water-holding capacity (WHC), protein loss, particle size and distribution, dynamic rheology and protein thermal stability were determined, then turbidity, active sulfhydryl group contents, hydrophobicity and molecular forces during thermal-induced gelling formation were comparatively studied. Results: Sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed that protein profiles of actomyosin extracted from normal and PSE-like meat were not significantly different (p>0.05). Compared with normal actomyosin, PSE-like actomyosin had lower gel strength, WHC, particle size, less protein content involved in thermal gelation forming (p<0.05), and reduced onset temperature (To), thermal transition temperature (Td), storage modulus (G′) and loss modulus (G″). The turbidity, reactive sulfhydryl group of PSE-like actomyosin were higher when heated from 40°C to 60°C. Further heating to 80°C had lower transition from reactive sulfhydryl group into a disulfide bond and surface hydrophobicity. Molecular forces showed that hydrophobic interaction was the main force for heat-induced gel formation while both ionic and hydrogen bonds were different significantly between normal and PSE-like actomyosin (p<0.05). Conclusion: These changes in chemical groups and inter-molecular bonds affected protein-protein interaction and protein-water interaction and contributed to the inferior thermal gelation properties of PSE-like meat.

A new species of gall midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) damaging flower buds of goji berry Lycium barbarum (Solanaceae)

        Ke-Long Jiao,Xiao-Yi Zhou,Hai-Li Qiao,Hao Wang,Jun Chen,Bai-Ming Liu,Wen-Jun Bu,Peter Kolesik 한국응용곤충학회 2020 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.23 No.4

Larvae of a previously undescribed gall midge species have been feeding within malformed flower buds of goji berry Lycium barbarum L. (Solanaceae) in China, preventing fruit development and causing damage to the fruit industry. The new species is named Gephyraulus lycantha Jiao & Kolesik, its morphology is described, the COI mitochondrial gene segment is sequenced, and the biology is outlined. In order to taxonomically accommodate the new gall midge, the scope of the genus Gephyraulus is broadened and now encompasses also species that lack dorso-apical sensoria on the female cercus.

Integrating of Nonlinear Shear Models into Fiber Element for Modeling Seismic Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Coupling Beams, Wall Piers, and Overall Coupled Wall Systems

        Ke Du,Huan Luo,Jiulin Bai,Jingjiang Sun 한국콘크리트학회 2019 International Journal of Concrete Structures and M Vol.13 No.5

Reinforced concrete (RC) coupled wall systems, compared with RC shear wall without opening, have more com-plex nonlinear behavior under the extreme earthquake loads due to the existence of coupling beams. The behavior characteristics induced by nonlinear shear deformation such as shear–flexure interaction, pinching effect, strength and stiffness deterioration are clearly observed in numerous cyclic tests of RC coupling beams and shear walls. To develop an analytical model capable of accurately and efficiently assessing the expected seismic performance of RC coupled wall systems, it is critical to define the appropriate key components models (i.e., nonlinear models of RC wall piers/shear walls and coupling beams). Classic fiber beam element based on the theory of Euler–Bernoulli beam is frequently adopted to simulate the nonlinear responses of slender RC wall piers and coupling beams in the literature because it is able to accurately model the response characters from interaction of axial–bending moment at the section level. However, classic fiber beam element cannot capture the nonlinear behaviors of non-slender structures mainly controlled by nonlinear shear deformation. To overcome this shortcoming, a modified force-based fiber element (MFBFE) including shear effect is introduced and used as the analysis element of non-slender RC coupling beams and shear walls. At the section level, a novel shear model for RC coupling beams and an existed shear model for RC shear walls are respectively added to this fiber element to simulate nonlinear responses of these two key components. The analytical model for RC coupled walls hence is formed through integrating the proposed models of these two key components. The validations with different experimental results of cyclic tests including key compo-nents and structural system reported in the literature using these proposed models are performed. Good agreements are achieved for all of these proposed models via comparisons between predicted results and experimental data.

Serum Resistance in Riemerella anatipestifer is Associated with Systemic Disease in Ducks

        Bai Wei,Hye-Suk Seo,Ke Shang,Jong-Yeol Park,Yea-Jin Lee,Yu-ri Choi,Sang-Won Kim,Se-Yeoun Cha,Hyung-Kwan Jang,Min Kang 한국가금학회 2021 韓國家禽學會誌 Vol.48 No.4

Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) can cause septicemia, polyserositis, and ataxia in ducks. It can also colonize the upper respiratory tract of healthy ducks. These differences in pathogenicity are probably the result of diverse mechanisms of virulence in different strains. Since serum resistance is a feature frequently found in systemic pathogens, 130 RA strains having different clinical origins were tested. A variety of serum susceptibility levels were detected. Pharynx strains from healthy ducks were mainly susceptible to the bactericidal effect of the serum, while systemic strains were serum resistant. Heat-treatment of the sera abolished the bactericidal activity, indicating that complement is a key factor in this effect. In an attempt to associate serum-resistance to surface determinant genes of the bacteria, we screened for six genes involved in lipopolysaccharide synthesis and membrane proteins in RA. Of these, three genes (AS87_09335, AS87_00480, and AS87_05195) encoding outer membrane proteins might be implicated in serum resistance statistically. The results indicate that serum resistance is a virulence mechanism in RA.

INTRINSIC HARDNESS OF Ti(C,N) FILMS AND ITS DEPENDENCE ON MICROSTRUCTURE

        Xu, Ke-Wei,Bai, Chen-Dong,Hu, Nai-Sai 한국재료학회 1995 Fabrication and Characterization of Advanced Mater Vol.1 No.2

The intrinsic hardness of Ti(C, N) films with a series of carbon content is investigated using Joensson-Hogmark method, but the constrnat, C, in J-H model is modified in terms of the hardness ratio of the film to the substrate. A linear relation between hardness and carbon content is evident for both ion plated and plasma assisted chemical vapour deposited films, but the latter has higher hardness and greater variation with carbon content. This is considered to be a result of TiN and TiC mixutre phases, which probally gives rise to small grain size and less columnar structure.

      • Clinical Outcomes of Basaloid Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Esophagus: A Retrospective Analysis of 142 Cases

        Zhang, Bai-Hua,Cheng, Gui-Yu,Xue, Qi,Gao, Shu-Geng,Sun, Ke-Lin,Wang, Yong-Gang,Mu, Ju-Wei,He, Jie Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.3

Background: Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus (BSCCE) is a rare and distinctive tumor with no standard treatment. This study aimed to explore treatment in relation to prognosis of the disease. Methods: A total of 142 patients with BSCCE that underwent treatment in our hospital from March 1999 to July 2010 were retrospectively analyzed. All patients received surgery, 42 postoperative radiotherapy and 28 patients chemotherapy. Results: There were 26 patients included in stage I, 60 in stage II, 53 in stage III and 3 in stage IV. The clinical symptoms and macroscopic performances of BSCCE did not differ from those of typical esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Among 118 patients receiving endoscopic biopsy, only 12 were diagnosed with BSCCE. The median survival time (MST) of the entire group was 32 months, with 1-, 3- and 5-year overall survival (OS) of 81.4%, 46.8% and 31.0%, respectively. The 5-year OS of stage I and II patients was significantly longer than that of stages III/IV, at 60.3%, 36.1% and 10.9%, respectively (p<0.001, p=0.001). The MST and 5-year OS were 59.0 months and 47.4% in patients with tumors located in the lower thoracic esophagus, and 27.0 months and 18.1% in those with lesions in the upper/middle esophagus (p=0.002). However, the survival was not significantly improved in patients undegoing adjunctive therapy. Multivariate analysis showed TNM stage and tumor location to be independent prognostic factors. Furthermore, distant metastasis was the most frequent failure pattern, with a median recurrence time of 10 months. Conclusion: BSCCE is an aggressive disease with rapid progression and a propensity for distant metastasis. It is difficult to make a definitive diagnosis via preoperative biopsy. Multidisciplinary therapy including radical esophagectomy with extended lymphadenectomy should be recommended, while the effectiveness of radiochemotherapy requires further validation for BSCCE.

      • ABO Blood Groups and Risk of Cancer: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Zhang, Bai-Lin,He, Na,Huang, Yu-Bei,Song, Feng-Ju,Chen, Ke-Xin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.11

Background: For decades, studies have been performed to evaluate the association between ABO blood groups and risk of cancer. However, whether ABO blood groups are associated with overall cancer risk remains unclear. We therefore conducted a meta-analysis of observational studies to assess this association. Materials and Methods: A search of Pubmed, Embase, ScienceDirect, Wiley, and Web of Knowledge databases (to May 2013) was supplemented by manual searches of bibliographies of key retrieved articles and relevant reviews. We included case-control studies and cohort studies with more than 100 cancer cases. Results: The search yielded 89 eligible studies that reported 100,554 cases at 30 cancer sites. For overall cancer risk, the pooled OR was 1.12 (95%CI: 1.09-1.16) for A vs. non- A groups, and 0.84 (95%CI: 0.80-0.88) for O vs. non-O groups. For individual cancer sites, blood group A was found to confer increased risk of gastric cancer (OR=1.18; 95%CI: 1.13-1.24), pancreatic cancer (OR=1.23; 95%CI: 1.15-1.32), breast cancer (OR=1.12; 95%CI: 1.01-1.24), ovarian cancer (OR=1.16; 95%CI: 1.04-1.27), and nasopharyngeal cancer (OR=1.17; 95%CI: 1.00-1.33). Blood group O was found to be linked to decreased risk of gastric cancer (OR=0.84; 95%CI: 0.80-0.88), pancreatic cancer (OR=0.75; 95%CI: 0.70-0.80), breast cancer (OR=0.90; 95%CI: 0.85-0.95), colorectal cancer (OR=0.89; 95%CI: 0.81-0.96), ovarian cancer (OR=0.76; 95%CI: 0.53-1.00), esophagus cancer (OR=0.94; 95%CI: 0.89-1.00), and nasopharyngeal cancer (OR=0.81; 95%CI: 0.70-0.91). Conclusions: Blood group A is associated with increased risk of cancer, and blood group O is associated with decreased risk of cancer.
