Twenty-four-hour Variation of Plasma Leptin Concentration and Pulsatile Leptin Secretion in Cattle

We conducted this study to investigate 24 h leptin profiles and to ascertain whether leptin secretion occurs in a pulsatile manner in cattle. Plasma leptin concentrations were measured every 10 min for 24 h in five Holstein steers aged 10 months. Simultaneously, feeding behavior was recorded every 5 min during this experiment. In two of the five cattle, leptin showed diurnal rhythmicity, which could be described by a cosine, with peaks between 15:00 and 16:00 and nadirs at around midnight. Pulsatile leptin release was quantified by model-free Cluster analysis. Plasma leptin showed a pulsatile pattern in all cattle, with an average number of pulses at 15 peaks/24 h. The daily number of pulses was not related to total time spent eating, ruminating or chewing. However, when divided into six 4 h time intervals, time spent ruminating was positively related with pulse number (p=0.05) in cattle showing no diurnal plasma leptin variation. These results suggest that cattle may have unique diurnal variation and pulsatile patterns of plasma leptin, differing from those of monogastric animals.
The Multi-rate Sampling Control for A Reconfigurable Robot

The conventional demand on robots in industrial fields has been oriented mainly to mass production, but the demand nowadays is diverse to meet the trend toward high-variation and low-quantity production. To meet this trend change, we have proposed a reconfigurable robot system that can satisfy various demands by easily changing the robot configuration. In this paper, we construct a multi-rate sampling control system for a reconfigurable robot to achieve better performance. The shorter the output sampling period becomes, the better performance is achieved even with a longer input sampling period. Moreover, we can improve the velocity response and accuracy of reproduction of the force more than the conventional single-rate sampling control system. Firstly, we describe the concept of a reconfigurable robot. Secondly, the decentralized control in the system consisting of the local and the central intelligences is explained. Thirdly, we simply describe an acceleration control for a reconfigurable robot. Fourthly, the advantage of the multi-rate sampling control is explained. Lastly, the effectiveness of the proposed system is confirmed by several experimental results.
AKARI NEAR-INFRARED SPECTROSCOPIC SURVEY FOR COMETARY VOLATILES

We performed a spectroscopic survey for cometary volatiles with the Infrared Camera onboard the Japanese infrared satellite AKARI. The observations were carried out in the near-infrared wavelength range in the period from 2008 June to 2010 January. In this paper, we summarize the observations and results of the AKARI survey for the mixing ratios of major volatiles in comets. We derived the $2.5-5{\mu}m$ spectra of 18 comets including both Oort cloud comets and Jupiter-family comets. Prominent emission bands in the observed spectra are the fundamental vibrational bands of water ($H_2O$) at $2.7{\mu}m$ and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) at $4.3{\mu}m$. The fundamental vibrational band of carbon monoxide (CO) at $4.7{\mu}m$ and the broad emission feature probably related to C-H bearing molecules can also be recognized around the $3.4-3.5{\mu}m$ region in some comets. We detect $CO_2$ in 17 out of 18 comets, and derived gas production rate ratios of $CO_2$ with respect to $H_2O$ in 17 comets. We detect a reliable CO emission band only in three of the comets. Our data set provides the largest homogeneous database of $CO_2/H_2O$ ratios in comets obtained so far.

The genus Gephyraulus Rübsaamen (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) is newly recorded on Fabaceae and in Japan. Gephyraulus tokudai Elsayed n. sp. that develops in the flower buds of Caesalpinia crista L. (Fabaceae) is described here as new to science. A description, illustrations, and ecological features of the new species are given. In addition, a molecular phylogenetic analysis including the new species, G. zewaili and G. lycantha, each from a different host plant family, indicated that Gephyraulus is a polyphyletic genus.
Targeted temperature management for postcardiac arrest syndrome

Neurocritical care management to improve neurologic outcome for postcardiac arrest syndrome (PCAS) has focused considerably on targeted temperature management (TTM). TTM attenuates the destructive processes following ischemia/reperfusion in PCAS. The principal indication of TTM is a patient with sustained coma after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). TTM can be strongly recommended with a target temperature between 32°C and 36°C for patients with shockable rhythm and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and weakly recommended for patients with initial asystole or pulseless electrical activity with OHCA and those with in-hospital cardiac arrest. TTM is induced and maintained using a cooling device with body temperature feedback under appropriate analgosedation. It requires the intensive management of various systemic respiratory, circulatory, and metabolic parameters that control shivering to prevent secondary brain damage. Considering the cerebral perfusion pressure, it is suggested that the mean arterial pressure should be particularly maintained over 80 mm Hg. Seizure management, including continuous electroencephalography monitoring, is also needed. Finally, we must continue the above mentioned care during and after the rewarming phase, because high fever and shivering may appear again during this period. Furthermore, neurological prognostication should be performed at least 72 hours after ROSC through clinical investigations and multimodal testing without sedation.

The 3rd Japan-Korea Workshop on Acupuncture and EBM was held at Kanazawa on June $16^{th}$. From Korea team, 4 papers were presented. Dr. Hahn introduced a new approach of data analysis on series of n-of-1 trials using the Bayesian statistics. It offered important information for the future n-of-1 trials. Dr. Park clearly demonstrated the significance of various sham devices proposed and stressed the importance of research questions when we choose the control intervention in RCT. Dr. Lee reported the results of survey in Korean Medical Doctors (KMD) for their point selection and techniques to the distal and local points. Dr. Kim presented the results of face to face survey on the KMD with 28 items for acupuncture treatment on the knee OA. Finally, a draft of protocol was introduced by Dr. Kim. The title was "multi-center, a randomized, single blinded, two arms, parallel-group study to compare the effectiveness and safety of 'individualized acupuncture' and 'standardized minimal acupuncture' in Korean and Japanese patients with knee osteoarthritis (Phase IV)". From Japan team, 7 speakers presented their comments and proposals on the protocol. Dr. Takahashi introduced several issues regarding n-of-1 trials and pointed out the importance of obtaining generalizability from n-of-1 trials. Dr. Shichidou pointed the importance of research design, selection of outcome measures and reduction of biases. Dr. Itoh presented the results of point selection for the knee OA based on the literature survey. Dr. Sumiya introduced several differences between KMD and Japanese acupuncturists based on the questionnaire used in KMD survey. Dr. Furuya demonstrated a result of press tack needle and its sham device on shoulder stiffness. Dr. Yamashita introduced the results of literature survey regarding adverse events occurred by acupuncture on knee OA. Dr.Tsukayama stressed the importance of responsibility of Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the conduction of clinical trials. After several issues were discussed, the need of continued meeting for final protocol development was agreed, then the workshop was closed.
