In the preceding symposium, we presented the result of the phylogenetic analysis of Stigmaeopsis spider mites (Acari: Tetranychidae) in Japan using sequence data of the Cytochrome Oxidase subunit I (COI) region of mitochondria DNA. We analyzed haplotypes representing S. longus, S. celarius, S. takahashii and S. saharai, which inhabit bamboo species of the genera Sasa and Phyllostachys (Poaceae; Bambusoideae), and two forms of S. miscanthi (HG and LW) living on Miscanthus sinensis (Poaceae; Panicoideae). Both neighborjoining and maximum-likelihood methods revealed that Stigmaeopsis consists of seven monophyletic groups, in which two forms of S. miscanthi form two distinct monophyletic groups, whereas four species of bamboo-inhabiting species comprise a polyphyletic assembly. These results imply a mismatch between diagnostic morphological characters (i.e. the length of dorsal setae) and their phylogenetic lineages for bamboo-inhabiting species, requiring re-evaluation of the use of these characters. In addition, our results indicate that plural lineages coexist in a single habitat at various regions, suggesting that differentiated lineages secondarily encounter around southwestern Japan. Interestingly, the result of phylogenetic analysis on mitochondrial COI and nuclear ITS1 region was, in part, inconsistent in internal branches. In this symposium, I re-analyzed more these data by phylogenetic network analysis. Based on the results, I make some inference about the process of habitat expansion of these mites.
English Textbooks in Japan and Korea

English education in Japan and Korea are similar in some respects. Although both countries are not completely but mostly monolingual society, where citizens do not need English in their daily life, they have begun to realize the importance of English as a tool for international communication, and as a result their English education is becoming more and more communication-oriented. It seems that Korea is the forerunner in communicative teaching and Japan is following. This report compares English textbooks used at schools in Japan and Korea, which shows a great deal on how English is taught in both countries. Since English is taught as a regular subject for 3rd to 6th grade at elementary schools in Korea but not in Japan (tentatively taught for 5th and 6th grade), the English taught at Korean middle schools (junior high schools) is much more advanced than that of Japan, however, it is not necessarily true of the senior high school level. The goal of English textbooks in each country is slightly different: Koreans aim to express themselves and exchange ideas in English, while Japanese textbooks are designed to arouse learners` interests in foreign culture and to foster their communicative attitude.

Here we assessed the effectiveness of cervical cancer screening using data from the Hiroshima Prefecture Cancer Registry regarding patient age at the start of screening and differences in screening intervals. A screening model was created to calculate the health status in relation to prognosis following cervical cancer screening and its influence on life expectancy. Epidemiological data on the mortality rate of cervical cancer by age groups and mortality rates from the Hiroshima Prefecture Cancer Registry were used for the model projections. Our results showed that life expectancy when screening rate was 100% compared with 0% was extended by approximately 1 month. Furthermore, when the incidence of cervical cancer was 0% compared with the screening rate was 100%, life expectancy was extended by a maximum of 3 months. Moreover, among individuals affected by cervical c ancer, a difference of 13 years in life expectancy was calculated between screened and unscreened groups.

Entanglement and corner Hamiltonian spectra of integrable open spin chains

<P>We investigate the entanglement entropy (EE) and entanglement spectra (ES) of critical SU(N) (2 <= N <= 4) spin chains and other integrable models of finite length with the density matrix renormalization group method. For all models under investigation, we find a remarkable agreement of the level spacings and the degeneracy structure of the ES with the spectrum of the corner Hamiltonian (CS), defined as the generator of the associated corner transfer matrix. The correspondence holds between ES(n) at the nth cut position from the edge of the spin model, and the spectrum CS(n) of the corner Hamiltonian of length n, for all values of n that we have checked. The cut position dependence of the ES shows a period-N oscillatory behavior for a given SU(N) chain, reminiscent of the oscillatory part of the entanglement entropy observed in the past for the same models. However, the oscillations of the ES do not die out in the bulk of the chain, in contrast to the asymptotically vanishing oscillation of the entanglement entropy. We present a heuristic argument based on Young tableaux construction that can explain the period-N structure of the ES qualitatively.</P>
Continuous Integration of Motion Components Using Motion Copying System

This paper presents the development and implementation of continuous integration of human motion. Recently, development of next-generation technology for save and reproduction of human motion based on haptic information is demanded in manufacturing and human support fields. Motion copying system which is the key technology to attain above has already proposed. Considering to adapt motion copying system in various fields, it is necessary to integrate some saved motion data and reproduce like one motion. In previous publication of the authors, the basic method for reproduction of integrated motion has already been proposed. However, basic method to integrate motion components comprehends the fear to break an environment, when coupling time, which connect motion components, is set short. In this paper, continuous integration of motion components is realized by adding acceleration feedforward loop to basic method during coupling time. Using this method, the coupling time is able to set shorter, because the tracking capability is improved. In this paper, an availability of proposed method is verified by experiments. By the proposed method, it is possible to open up new areas of applications like skill acquisition of experts, power assist, and so on.

Milk-derived peptides, Val-Pro-Pro (VPP) and Ile-Pro-Pro (IPP), have angiotensin I–converting enzyme inhibitory activities and blood pressure-lowering effects. We examined the effects of these peptides on the development of atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E–deficient [apoE(−/−)] mice. For 31 weeks, six-week-old male apoE(−/−) mice received a diet that included one of the following: fermented milk containing both VPP and IPP; casein hydrolysate containing both of these peptides; synthesized VPP; synthesized IPP; enalapril; captopril; or control diet. At the end of feeding, blood biochemistry, aortic atherogenesis, and gene expression by DNA microarray analysis were evaluated. There were no significant changes in the plasma lipid levels and 8-isoprostane, a marker of oxidative stress. The area ratio of intima to media in the aortic arch was significantly lower in the fermented milk, casein hydrolysate, synthesized VPP, enalapril, and captopril groups than in the control group. As is common with diets containing VPP and/or IPP, we observed reductions in mRNA expression of inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-1β, oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor, and transcription regulators. These results suggest that a continuous intake of VPP and IPP might be beneficial for preventing atherosclerosis caused by hypercholesterolemia.
