Analysis of activation, ohmic, and concentration losses in hydrogen fuelled PEM fuel cell

This paper deals with the effects of design (active area, current density, membrane conductivity) and operating parameters (temperature, relative humidity) on the performance of hydrogen-fuelled proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. The design parameter of a PEM fuel cell with the active area of the single cell considered in this study is 25 cm<sup>2</sup> (5 × 5). The operating voltage and current density of the fuel cell were 0.7 V and 0.5 A/cm<sup>2</sup> respectively. The variations of activation voltage, ohmic voltage, and concentration voltage with respect to current density are analyzed in detail. The membrane conductivity with variable relative humidity is also analyzed. The results show that the maximum activation overpotential of the fuel cell was 0.4358 V at 0.21 A/cm<sup>2</sup> due to slow reaction kinetics. The calculated ohmic and concentrated overpotential in the fuel cell was 0.01395 V at 0.76 A/cm<sup>2</sup> and 0.027 V at 1.46 A/cm<sup>2</sup> respectively.

A new record of monogeneric family Vietnamellidae (Insecta: Ephemeroptera) is established for India with Vietnamella sp. A described based on the larvae from Arunachal Pradesh, India. This species can be distinguished from other known species of this genus in the larval stage by the following combination of characters: (i) outer pair of projections in head large and stout, triangular, cone-shaped with serrated spines; (ii) posterolateral angles of abdominal terga 2–9 extended into sharp projections; (iii) caudal filaments pale yellowish brown with dense lateral setae on inner and outer margins of middle part; (iv) femora of mid- and hind-legs broader; and (v) second segment of the maxillary palpi shorter than first segment.
Trihalomethanes in the Cooling Discharge of a Power Plant on Chlorination of Intake Seawater

Trihalomethanes (THMs) formation and species distribution in the discharged chlorinated cooling seawater of a nuclear power plant was assessed during Aug 2010 to July 2011. The monthly variation of chlorine demand of the source seawater under laboratory chlorination conditions was studied for the same period. The entire period can be divided into two separate zones; viz. Feb, Mar, Apr, Sep, Oct (low chlorine demand), and May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Nov, Dec, Jan (high chlorine demand) months. Bromoform was found to be the single dominant THMs species in the chlorinated cooling seawater discharge. The THMs concentration was observed to be highest for the month of Nov 2010 (41 μg/L), and lowest for Feb 2011(12 μg/L). Under laboratory chlorination of intake seawater with 1 ppm Cl2, the concentration of THMs that was formed within 5–15 min is in agreement with the actual concentration in the discharge water. A simplified predictive approach is proposed for the total THMs concentration at the cooling discharge outlet of a power plant, based on the actual chlorine demand of source water.

Luffa acutanqula var. amara exhibits floral and extrafloral nectaries. The floral nectaries are restricted to the torus of the male flowers, while the extrafloral nectaries are observed on foliage leaves, probract, outer surface of calyx and pedicels. The floral nectaries develop from a group of epidermal and sub-epidermal initials which differentiate into secretory and subsecretory zones respectively during further divisions. The extrafloral nectary initiates from a single papillate nectary initial which gives rise to mature nectary comprising stalk layer, secretory and subsecretory tissues. Both the floral and extrafloral nectaries are vascularized. Interactions between insect-visitors and the plant with special reference to their functions are also discussed.

The current study deals with the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using Salicornia brachiata (Sb) and evaluation of their antibacterial and catalytic activity. The SbAuNPs showed purple color with a characteristic surface plasmon resonance peak at 532nm. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy revealed polydispersed AuNPs with the size range from 22 to 35nm. Energy dispersive X-ray and thin layer X-ray diffraction analysis clearly shows that SbAuNPs was pure and crystalline in nature. As prepared gold nanoparticles was used as a catalyst for the sodium borohydride reduction of 4-nitro phenol to 4-amino phenol and methylene blue to leucomethylene blue. The green synthesized nanoparticles exhibited potent antibacterial activity against the pathogenic bacteria, as evidenced by their zone of inhibition. In addition, we showed that the SbAuNPs in combination with the regular antibiotic, ofloxacin, exhibit superior antibacterial activity than the individual.
Farmland Prices in a Developing Economy - Some Stylised Facts and Determinants

The study constructs a district and state level series of farmland prices using the village level data from MIMAP-India survey and identifies the major determinants of farmland prices. The estimates at micro level showed that density of population in the rural areas, food grain yield and distance from the nearest town were the major determinants of farmland prices. When macro variables were added at the All India level, it was found that density of rural population, road density and share of non-agriculture in GDP as well as in work force affected farmland prices positively while rural poverty affected them adversely. The results appear to have implications for urban planning, industrial location and various government programs for rural development and poverty alleviation.
