HEAT TRANSFER ENHANCEMENT ON VENTILATED BRAKE DISK WITH BLADE INCLINATION ANGLE VARIATION
K. M. MUNISAMY,N. H. SHUAIB,M. Z. YUSOFF,S. K. THANGARAJU 한국자동차공학회 2013 International journal of automotive technology Vol.14 No.4
Ventilated brake disk is the state of the art technology in automobile braking system. It is well known that the braking capability of brake disk is affected by the rate at which heat is dissipated through forced convection. The rapid increase and decrease of the brake disk temperature could lead to catastrophic failure of the brake disk due to high thermal stress. The objective of the current study is to investigate the potential heat transfer enhancements in ventilated brake disk by varying the geometrical parameters of the blades inside the flow passage. This is done through comparisons of nondimensional properties for flow and heat transfer in different blade configurations of the ventilated brake disk. The straight blade configuration is used as a baseline reference against the angled blades. The investigations are performed by using both experimental and computational means and the results are compared and discussed. Analysis shows that significant increase in braking performance can be achieved with relatively simple alteration of the ventilated blade angle. The results show a tremendous increase in the heat transfer rate with blade inclination angle configurations as compared to conventional straight blade. The Nusselt number is found to be in a power-law relationship with the Reynolds number. Distinct relationship between laminar and turbulent condition is predicted. An improvement in total convective heat transfer coefficient of 51% was achieved with blade inclination angle of 45o tilting towards clockwise direction.

Selvi, P.K.,Panandam, J.M.,Yusoff , K.,Tan, S.G. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2004 Animal Bioscience Vol.17 No.10
The Mafriwal dairy cattle was developed to meet the demands of the Malaysian dairy Industry. Although there are reports on its production and reproductive performance, there has been no work on its molecular characterization. This study was conducted to characterize the Mafriwal dairy cattle using microsatellite markers. Fifty two microsatellite loci were analysed for forty Mafriwal dairy cows kept at Institut Haiwan Kluang, Malaysia. The study showed two microsatellite loci to be monomorphic. Allele frequencies for the polymorphic loci ranged from 0.01 to 0.31. Genotype frequencies ranged from 0.03 to 0.33. The mean overall heterozygosity was 0.79. All polymorphic microsatellite loci deviated significantly (p<0.01) from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The Mafriwal dairy cattle showed high genetic variability despite being a nucleus herd and artificial insemination being practiced.

Research in low cost feeds with high nutritional value and immunogenicity is important to reduce production cost and increase yields in the shrimp industry. In this study, immunostimulants of bacterial origin (peptidoglycan and lipopolysaccharides) and egg white were incorporated in shrimp diets as feed additives to determine the growth, survival and tolerance of Penaeus monodon to white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). Although the results obtained were not statistically significant (p>0.05) among the treatments, shrimp fed with bacterial additives and egg white showed higher weight gain, specific growth rate and survival than those fed on commercial shrimp diet. Shrimp fed with artificial diet showed 100% mortality when challenged with WSSV. However, shrimp fed on peptidoglycan supplemented diet had higher survival than their counterpart, whereas shrimp fed on egg white supplemented diet had a higher specific growth rate and better tolerance when challenged with WSSV. Further studies are required to determine the effectiveness and optimization of bacterial strains and egg white as feed additives to increase production and enhance the shrimp immune response to diseases.

In the present study, experiments have been conducted to measure the surface tension and heat capacity of aqueous mixtures of N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) and ionic liquids (ILs) at atmospheric pressure. Two types of ILs, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][BF4] and 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium dicyanamide [bmim][DCA]) were used in these experiments. The surface tension was found to decrease with increasing temperature and ionic liquid concentration. Furthermore, the heat capacity of the mixtures increases with decreasing ionic-liquid concentration and increasing temperature. Linear equations were used to correlate the measured surface tension values, quadratic equations were applied to correlate the heat capacity at different compositions and temperatures.

Group A Streptococcus strain ST4529 is a provisional new ems type which has been recently reported in Malaysia (Jomal, et al. 1999. Energ. Infect . Dis. 5,10-14). This strain was found to be opacity factor (OF) negative with a Tl phenotype. Usually, OF negative strains with T1 phenotypes are associated with acute rheumatic fever. However, strain ST4529 was isolated from the blood of a patient with septicemia. Comparison of the deduced amino acid sequence of the mature hypervariable N-terminus of ST4529 showed only 43% identity with that of M5, the closest matched OF negative strain with a T1 phenotype. Thus, ST4529 most probably encodes a new serospecifically unique M protein which is associated with septicemia rather than pharyngitis infections. The strains with these phenotypes are very important because their sequences should be considered for developing any anti-streptococcal vaccines.

The work reported here is an attempt to explore the possibility of DNA microsatellite loci transfer (cross-species amplification) to other economically important aquacultured catfish species other than its source species. A total of 25 new microsatellite loci developed for riverine catfish, Mystus nemurus were successfully cross-amplified in two distantly related catfish species within the suborder Siluroidei. Five out of the 19 loci that successfully cross-amplified in Pangasius micronemus were polymorphic, while for Clarias batrachus, cross-amplification was successful using 17 polymorphic loci. The observed heterozygosities were high for all the three catfishes. The results indicated that microsatellite loci could be as polymorphic in non-source species as in the source species.

In present study, biosynthesis of Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles (NPs) using Commelina nudiflora aqueous extract as a stabilizing and reducing agent is reported. The crystalline nature, size, shape and composition of synthesized Au-Ag alloy NPs were characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometer, field emission scanning electron spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The synthesized Au-Ag alloy NPs exhibited different ranges of sizes between 20 and 80 nm with different morphology such as spherical, rod and triangular. FT-IR spectral data revealed that the plant extract contains amine, alcohol, phenol and alkane molecules which are critically involved in the formation of Au-Ag alloy NPs. Finally, the biosynthesized Au-Ag alloys NPs exhibited a strong minimum inhibitory, minimum bactericidal activity against selected oral pathogenic bacteria. The present study gives an important suggestion on plant extract mediated synthesis bimetallic NPs (Au-Ag alloy) emphasis on oral pathogenic bacteria activities.

Background: Smoking is a learnt behavior during adolescence and understanding the factor/s associated with smoking will assist in identifying suitable measures in combating the rising prevalence of smoking among adolescents. This research aimed to identify the factor/s associated with smoking among form four students in Kota Tinggi, Johor. Multistage sampling was used to select a representative sample of students in 2008 and data were collected using a self-administered validated questionnaire. This study revealed that the overall smoking prevalence was 19.0% with a significantly higher proportion of male smokers (35.8%) as compared to females (3.15%). Adolescents who were male (aOR 6.6, 95%CI 2.61-16.4), those who had peer/s who smoked (aOR 4.03, 95% CI 1.31-12.4), and those who studied in rural areas and Felda Settlements ( aOR 4.59, 95 CI 1.11-18.0; aOR 9.42, 95%CI 3.91-29.1) were more likely to smoke in the past one week. On the other hand, adolescents with better knowledge on the hazards of smoking and negative attitudes towards smoking were less likely to smoke (aOR 0.51, 95%CI 0.37-0.72; aOR 0.67, 95%CI 0.46-0.99). Future promotional and interventional programmes on smoking should be considered and the above identified risk factors integrated to reduce smoking prevalence among students of school-going ages in Kota Tinggi. Johor.
