Magneto-Photoluminescence and Spin Dynamics of Self-Assembled CdSe Quantum Dots in Zn1-xMnxSe

We have studied photoluminescence spectra of CdSe self-assembled quantum dots (QD's) embedded in Zn$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$Se ($x$ = 0.05 and 0.15) with and without an external magnetic field. Under a magnetic field, the photoluminescence from CdSe QD's was circularly polarized under light excitation above the bandgap energy of ZnMnSe, indicating carrier spin polarization in CdSe QD's. The time-resolved photoluminescence study showed that spin-flip occured very rapidly as photocarriers transfered from the ZnMnSe to the CdSe QD's to reach statistical equilibrium of the spin states in the CdSe QD's. The Zeeman splitting in the CdSe QD's was several meV, still larger than the thermal energy at 5 K. These results suggest that the spin-polarization in CdSe QD's is mainly due to the Zeeman splitting of carriers in the CdSe quantum dots.

The authors examined the prevalence of ascaris and hookworm infection in rural villages: Ije and Yongyon, albong-myun, Iksan - gun,Chollapukdo, Korea. The positive cases treated with appropriate anthelmintics iperazine adipate and Bephenium hydroxynaphthoate etc.). Additionally, the resistance of ascaris and hook- eggs in. methane gas producing tanks which were provided in I je-village were examined. The first year U are summarized as follows: The incidence of ascaris in Ije-village was 63.0% (184 out of 291 examined) before treatment and 70.5% titer 10 months, but the worm burden (E.P.G./gm feces) was 26,731 before treatment in average and 6,018 n' months later. -Yongyon, the incidence and worm burden in the same period changed from 77.1% (108 out of 140 exined) to 63.0% an& 22,091/E.P.G. to 4,709/E.P.G. Incidence of hookworm before treatment was 36(12.4%)out of 291 examined in Ije village, and 29(20.7/) t of. 140 examined 'in Yongyon village. After the treatment, the positives were only two in both villages pectively. On the third examination after the second treatment, the remaining two positives became gative. More than 15 % of ascaris eggs in methane gas producing tanks surived after 5 weeks during summer seasen, and hookworm eggs survived for 12 days which were the terminal date in the study.
Control of Magnetic Behavior in Fe <tex> $_3$</tex> O <tex> $_4$</tex> Nanostructures

Hexagonally well-ordered nanoporous anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) templates were synthesized by electrochemical method. Then, magnetite (Fe <TEX>$_3$</TEX> O <TEX>$_4$</TEX> ) nanoparticles of 8–15-nm diameter were filled in the pores of the AAO template, and then the morphology and magnetic properties were characterized. Vibrating sample magnetometer measurement indicated that the nanoparticles inside AAO showed superparamagnetic behavior at as-filled state. But after annealing at 600 <TEX>$,^circ$</TEX> C for 2 hr, the nanostructure (i.e., an assembly of nanoparticles) exhibited coercivity of 80 Oe. Superconducting quantum interference measurement device data showed that after annealing the blocking temperature was above 300 K. Thus, the annealed magnetite nanostructures possessed ferrimagnetism.

In this thesis, an waveguide for a single optical modulator which is fabricated on X-cut LiNbO₃substrate by proton exchange process is studied. After proton exchange process, annealing process gave an effect on the fabrication of the waveguide. The relationship between refractive index change of waveguide and maximum output was obtained, varying the annealing time for between 30 minutes and 260 minutes. A self-aligned method was used to simplify the fabrication process of the waveguide and to maximize efficiency of electric field. The depth of the diffused waveguide which was measured by using α-step was about 4 μm. The result was almost the same as simulation result. Also,an image reversal method was used to increase conductivity of electrode.

Molecular-level understanding of the structure and the functions of the lymphatic system has greatly enhanced the importance of this second circulation system, especially in connection with cancer metastasis and inflammation. Recently, a third circulatory system, the primo vascular system (PVS) was found in various parts of an animal's body, especially as threadlike structures floating in the lymphatic flow in lymph vessels. Although the medical significance of this emerging system will require much work in the future, at present, several important suggestions in connection with immune cells, stem cells, and cancer metastasis have already appeared. Experiments to observe the PVS in the lymph vessels near the caudal vena cava of rabbits and rats have been performed by several independent teams, but reproduction requires considerable skill and technical know-how. In this article, we provide a detailed protocol to detect the PVS inside the lymph vessels of a rabbit. Detection and isolation are the first steps in unraveling the physiological functions of the PVS, which awaits intensive research.

Flowering on time is a critically important for successful reproduction of plants. Here we report an early-flowering mutant in Arabidopsis thaliana, accelerated flowering 1-1D (afl1-1D) that exhibited pleiotropic developmental defects including semi-dwarfism, curly leaf, and increased branching. Genetic analysis showed that afl1-1D mutant is a single, dominant mutant. Chromosomal mapping indicates that AFL1 resides at the middle of chromosome 4, around which no known flowering-related genes have been characterized. Expression analysis and double mutant studies with late flowering mutants in various floral pathways indicated that elevated FT is responsible for the early-flowering of afl1-1D mutant. Interestingly, not only flowering-related genes, but also several floral homeotic genes were ectopically overexpressed in the afl1-1D mutants in both FT-dependent and -independent manner. The degree of histone H3 Lys27-trimethylation (H3K27me3) was reduced in several chromatin including FT, FLC, AG and SEP3 in the afl1-1D, suggesting that afl1-1D might be involved in chromatin modification. In support, double mutant analysis of afl1-1D and lhp1-4 revealed epistatic interaction between afl1-1D and lhp1-4 in regard to flowering control. Taken together, we propose that AFL1 regulate various aspect of development through chromatin modification, particularly associated with H3K27me3 in A. thaliana.
Production of Interferon Tau and TGF-β by Porcine Embryos

In pigs, expression and amounts of biologically active interferon tau (IFNT) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) at the conceptus-maternal interface increase significantly as conceptuses elongate and begin the implantation process. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) acts through EGF receptor (EGFR) present in the blastocyst seems to regulate embryonic production of IFNT. To understand the mechanisms regulating the interaction between the hatched blastocyst and maternal uterine environment, the production of IFNT and TGF-β were investigated. Hatched pig blastocysts (days 7~10) were cultured and exposed to EGF (0, 1, 10 and 100 ng/mL) for 24, 48 and 72 h. Protein concentrations of IFNT in the cultured media were determined by commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Epidermal growth factor (10 and 100 ng/mL) increased embryonic production of IFNT and TGF-β production by hatched blastocysts. The above results suggest that epidermal growth factor produced by epithelial cell stimulates the production of IFNT by pig trophoblasts. The capacity of conceptus to increase IFNT and TGF-β production in response to EGF stimulation may be important for the establishment of pregnancy in pig.
Equlibration Time of Porcine Embryo Vitrification Affects the Embryo Quality

Survival depends on the cell type and its ability to endure stresses like of cooling and thawing. The aim of this study was to examine the survival rate of embryonic cell death and DNA fragmentation by controlling the time of equilibration exposure to equilibrium during freezing of in vitro matured porcine embryos. In vitro fertilization (IVF) embryos were exposed to Equilibration solution (HEPES within TCM199, 10% dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), 10% ethylene glycol (EG)) and vitrification solution (20% DMSO, 20% EG, 0.5 mol/L sucrose) processing the three-step method. Embryos were loaded on open cryotop sheet and minimal volume of vitrification solution surrounding the embryo. Plunge the cryotop into liquid nitrogen quickly. For vitrification and warming steps were performed on a heated plate at 37°C. The experiment, different of vitrification solution exposure time used in the different protocols. The reagent composition of the three-step method used in the experiment was the same. A total of 82 in vitro fertilization embryo were randomly requested for fresh embryo group (control, n=27), conventional method group (Group 1, Equilibration time 15 min, n=27) or method of reducing time group (Group 2, Equilibration time 5 min and 5 min, n=28). Group 2 reduced the survival rate (10%), apoptosis (15%) and mitochondrial DNA fragmentation (17%) (p<0.05) compared with group 1. But there was no significant differences with cell number and pattern among three groups (control, group 1, group 2). These result suggest that time adjustment at the equilibration solution in vitrification may increase the quality of in vitro fertilization embryo.
