Numerical study on steel plate-concrete composite walls subjected to projectile impacts

Local responses of steel plate-concrete composite (SC) walls under impact loads are typically evaluated using design equations available in the AISC N690s1-15. These equations enable design of impact-resistant SC walls, but some essential parts such as the effects of wall size and shear reinforcement ratio have not been addressed. Also, since they were developed for design basis events, improved equations are required for accurate prediction of the impact behaviors of SC walls for beyond design basis impact evaluation. This paper presents a numerical study to construct a robust numerical model of SC walls subjected to impact loads to reasonably predict the SC-wall impact behavior, to evaluate the findings observed from the impact tests including the effects of the key design parameters, and to assess the actual responses of full-scale SC walls. The numerical calculations are validated using intermediate-scale impact tests performed previously. The influences of the fracture energy of concrete and the conservative aspects of the current design equations are discussed carefully. Recommendations are made for design practice.

Tension force of hanger ropes has been recognized and utilized as an important parameter for health monitoring of suspension bridges. Conventional vibration method based on string theory has been utilized to estimate tension forces of relatively long hanger ropes without any problem, however it is convinced that the vibration method is not applicable for shorter hanger ropes in which the influence of flexural stiffness is not ignorable. Therefore, as an alternative of vibration method, a number of feasibility studies of system identification(SI) technique considering flexural stiffness of the hanger ropes are recently performed. In this study, the influence of support condition of the finite element model utilized for the SI method is investigated with numerical examples. The numerical examples are prepared with the specification of the Kwang-Ahn bridge hanger ropes, and it is revealed that the estimation result of the tension force can be varied from -21.6 % to +35.3 % of the exact value according to the consideration of the support condition of FE model. Therefore, it is concluded that the rotational stiffness of the support spring should be included to the list of the identification parameters of the FE model to improve the result of tension estimation.
장경간 철도 교량에 적용된 슬라이딩 궤도와 레일신축이음장치의 궤도-교량 상호작용 비교

슬라이딩 궤도는 콘크리트 궤도와 교량 바닥판 사이에 저마찰 슬라이드층을 두어 레일신축이음장치와 같은 특수 장치를 적용하지 않고도 궤도-교량 상호작용 효과를 효과적으로 저감시킬 수 있는 새로운 궤도 시스템으로 개발되고 있다. 이 논문에서는 장경간 교량에 슬라이딩 궤도와 레일신축이음장치를 각각 적용한 경우에 대하여 궤도-교량 상호작용해석을 수행하고 그 결과를 비교 검토하였다. 대상교량은 상호작용 효과를 극대화하기 위하여 9경간 연속 PSC교와 2경간 연속 강합성교를 포함하며, 총 연장 1,205m, 최대 고정지점간 거리 825m인 장경간 교량을 선정하였다. 해석결과 슬라이딩 궤도는 레일신축이음장치를 적용한 경우보다 레일 부가 축력이 더 작은 것은 물론, 지점부에 재하되는 수평 반력 또한 작게 나타나 궤도-교량 상호작용 저감 효과가 뛰어난 것으로 확인되었다. 반면 슬라이딩 궤도는 온도하중에 의해 높은 슬래브 축력이 발생되므로, 궤도 설계 시 슬래브 축력에 대한 단면 설계에 주의를 기울일 필요가 있다. Sliding slab track system, which consists of low friction sliding layer between track slab and bridge deck, is recently devised to reduce track-bridge interaction effect of continuously welded rail(CWR) without applying special devices such as rail expansion joint(REJ). In this study, a series of track-bridge interaction analyses of a long-span bridge with sliding slab track and REJ are performed respectively and the results are compared. The bridge model includes PSC box girder bridge with 9 continuous spans, and steel-concrete composite girder bridge with 2 continuous spans. The total length of the bridge model is 1,205m, and the maximum spacing between the two fixed supports is 825m. Analyses results showed that the sliding slab track system is highly effective on interaction reduction since lower rail additional axial stress is resulted than REJ application. Additionally, horizontal reaction forces in fixed supports were also reduced compared to the results of REJ application. However, higher slab axial forces were developed in the sliding slab track due to the temperature load. Therefore, track slab section of the sliding slab track system should be carefully designed against slab axial forces.
