<P>The functional rules for microRNA (miRNA) targeting remain controversial despite their biological importance because only a small fraction of distinct interactions, called site types, have been examined among an astronomical number of site types that can occur between miRNAs and their target mRNAs. To systematically discover functional site types and to evaluate the contradicting rules reported previously, we used large-scale transcriptome data and statistically examined whether each of approximately 2 billion site types is enriched in differentially downregulated mRNAs responding to overexpressed miRNAs. Accordingly, we identified seven non-canonical functional site types, most of which are novel, in addition to four canonical site types, while also removing numerous false positives reported by previous studies. Extensive experimental validation and significantly elevated 3' UTR sequence conservation indicate that these non-canonical site types may have biologically relevant roles. Our expanded catalog of functional site types suggests that the gene regulatory network controlled by miRNAs may be far more complex than currently understood.</P>
Tracing surrogate bacteria inoculated on hide through the beef slaughtering process

Many countries have imposed regulations relating to concerns that hide contamination will affect the cleanliness of abattoirs. However, South Korea has not indicated any clear criteria. The purpose of this study is to use surrogate bacteria to measure the contamination in abattoirs caused by contaminated cattle hides. The swab contact method and plate count method are used. Surrogate bacteria are found in most internal environments after the final process. These surrogates remained on the carcass even after the final washing process. This paper is the first study in South Korea that use surrogate bacteria to analyze contamination levels in abattoirs.

Recently, the noise of vehicle is the one of the key factors for customers to purchase a vehicle and the most important part which is related to the noise is the exhaust system. Thus, car makers have their own ways to assess this exhaust noise not only to decrease the level of noise but to enhance the feeling of it. Typically, to do these things in the early stage of development, the tuning code of the exhaust system has to be made by CAE tool, which is very reliable but expensive, and the prototype parts of this code would be made for the validation test. Then this process can be iterated to meet the target of the performance. In this study, a new algorithm which adapts the ‘convective sound wave theory’ and ‘anti-Doppler effect’ has been introduced and with this algorithm, a calculation code for sound field estimation has been developed. And for the validation of the calculation code, various comparisons and validations were carried out with the result of wind tunnel test. Also the comparison with other CAE tool has been performed for the validity and the improvement of the new calculation code could be achieved.

<P>Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IFG1) is neuroprotective in animal models of focal brain ischemia and correlates with ischemic stroke (IS) outcome in the elderly. In this study, we investigated whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the IFG1 gene are associated with the development and clinical features of IS in a Korean population. A total of 119 patients with IS and 289 control subjects were recruited. Stroke patients were classified into subgroups according to the scores of the National Institutes of Health Stroke Survey (NIHSS; <6 and ???6) and the Modified Barthel Index (MBI; <60 and ???60). Among the SNPs of the IFG1 gene, five SNPs were selected and analyzed by direct sequencing: rs2162679 (intron), rs2195239 (intron), rs978458 (intron), rs1520220 (intron) and rs6214 (3' untranslated region; 3'UTR). Multiple logistic regression models were conducted to analyze genetic data. SNPStats, SNPAnalyzer Pro and Helixtree programs were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs), 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and p-values. Two SNPs, rs2162679 and rs6214, were associated with the development of IS. After Bonferroni correction (p(c)), the A and G alleles of rs2162679 and rs6214 had significant differences between patients with IS and the controls [rs2162679, OR (95% CI) = 1.64 (1.17-2.31), p=0.004, p(c)=0.02; rs6214, OR (95% CI) = 1.52 (1.12-2.07), p=0.007, p(c)=0.035], respectively. However, the five selected SNPs were not related to the NIHSS and MBI scores. These results suggest that IGF1 may be associated with the development of IS.</P>
The SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant spike protein facilitates cell–cell fusion

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike (S) protein mediates virus entry by binding to the host cell receptor, human angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (hACE2), and catalyzing virus–host membrane fusion. The S protein also mediates cell–cell fusion, potentially allowing the virus to spread virion-independently. Here, we compared the fusogenicity of SARS-CoV-2 variant S proteins using a cell–cell fusion assay. In cells overexpressing hACE2, cell–cell fusion ability of all tested SARS-CoV-2 variants was similar to that of the Wuhan-Hu-1 strain. However, in cells with endogenous hACE2, SARS-CoV-2 variants, especially the Delta variant, stimulated significantly greater cell–cell fusion than the original strain. Our results showed that the Delta variant S protein is highly fusogenic and can spread rapidly by utilizing small amounts of hACE2.

In general, the main source of vehicle noise is the ignition of engine and to diminish the degree of the noise, exhaust system is used as complicated filters for attenuating the noise more or less. But, even these kinds of filters are playing their roles at their expected frequencies bands, some noises still can be detected by passengers. They are so called ‘abnormal noises’ ,which are discovered when their anti-filters are working well, and it is very difficult to find what is the real problem and what is the basis of this phenomenon. Usually, frequency analysis is the most useful method for studying noise phenomena, but main effect of abnormal noise comes from listener’s feeling, therefore only frequency analysis process is not enough to clarify not only the cause but also the phenomenon itself. In this study, one of the abnormal noise, which can be detected very easily at the tail pipe, has been examined by mathematical way to define the cause of feeling of abnormal noise more effectively and precisely, furthermore also noise filter development process has been developed as a result in order to design proper filter system for exhaust system. For the validation of this calculation and design process, virtual noise has been exerted to calculated filters which had been designed properly by the calculation of former step and then, the noise has been accessed as a listener’s feeling by sound feeling matrices of octave band modulation.
