Association Between MDM2 SNP309 T>G and Risk of Gastric Cancer: A Meta-analysis

Background: As a negative regulator of P53, MDM2 plays an important role in carcinogenesis; a polymorphism in its promoter region. SNP309 T>G, is known to increase the expression of MDM2, thus being considered related to higher susceptibility to neoplasia. However, no agreement has been achieved regarding its effects on gastric cancer. Methods: The present systematic meta-analysis was performed based on comprehensive literature search from Pubmed, Web of science and CBM databases. Results: It was suggested from 6 independent studies that the GG genotype is associated with a significantly increased risk of gastric cancer (Recessive: OR = 1.43, 95% CI = 1.08-1.91, P = 0.013), and subgroup analysis also confirmed the relationship (English publications-recessive model: OR = 1.45, 95% CI = 1.10-1.91, P = 0.009; Studies in China-recessive model: OR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.08-2.30, P = 0.017). No publication bias was detected. Conclusion: The meta-analysis indicated a significant inverse association between GG genotype carriage and elevated risk of gastric cancer. However, more studies and detailed information are needed to fully address the topic.

Background: The LigaSure vessel sealing system has been proposed to save operation time and reduce intraoperative blood loss for various surgeries. However, its usage for gastric cancer is still controversial. The aim of the present meta-analysis was to compare the effectiveness of LigaSure with conventional surgery in gastrectomy. Materials and Methods: Sources were retrieved from the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCOPUS and Google Scholar until February, 2015. All randomized controlled trials comparing LigaSure with conventional surgery in curative gastric cancer resection were selected. After data extraction, statistics were performed by Review Manager 5.1 software. Results: Three eligible randomized controlled trials were evaluated, with a total of 335 patients. The quality of the included trials was good, yet some methodological and clinical heterogeneity existed. There were no significant differences between the LigaSure and conventional groups in operative time (weighted mean difference [WMD], -22.95 minutes; 95% confidence interval [CI], [-59.75, 13.85]; P = 0.22), blood loss (WMD, -45.8 ml; 95% CI, [-134.5, 42.90]; P = 0.31), nor the incidence of surgical complications (odds ratio, 1.18; 95% CI, [0.68, 2.05]; P = 0.54). But there was a longer duration of hospital stay in LigaSure group (WMD, 1.41 days; 95% CI, [0.14, 2.68]; P = 0.03). Conclusions: All available randomized evidence has been summarized. LigaSure does not confer significant advantage over conventional surgery for curative gastric cancer resection. The usefulness of the device may be limited in gastrectomy. But, more trials are needed for further assessment of the LigaSure system for gastric cancer.

The genomic diversity of Avian leukosis virus subgroup J (ALV-J) was investigated in an experimentally infected chicken. ALV-J variantsin tissues from four different organs of the same bird were re-isolated in DF-1 cells, and their gp85 gene was amplified and cloned. Ten clonesfrom each organ were sequenced and compared with the original inoculum strain, NX0101. The minimum homology of each organ rangedfrom 96.7 to 97.6%, and the lowest homology between organs was only 94.9%, which was much lower than the 99.1% homology of inoculumNX0101, indicating high diversity of ALV-J, even within the same bird. The gp85 mutations from the left kidney, which contained tumors,and the right kidney, which was tumor-free, had higher non-synonymous to synonymous mutation ratios than those in the tumor-bearing liverand lungs. Additionally, the mutational sites of gp85 gene in the kidney were similar, and they differed from those in the liver and lung, implyingthat organ- or tissue-specific selective pressure had a greater influence on the evolution of ALV-J diversity. These results suggest that moreALV-J clones from different organs and tissues should be sequenced and compared to better understand viral evolution and molecularepidemiology in the field.
Breast Cancer Diagnosis Using Cluster-based Undersampling and Boosted C5.0 Algorithm

Learning from imbalanced data set is relatively new challenge for breast cancer diagnosis, where the diseases cases are often quite rare relative to normal population. Although traditional algorithms are all accuracyoriented which result biased towards the majority class. The combinations of sampling methods with ensemble classifiers have shown certainly good performance. In this paper, a hybrid of cluster-based undersampling and boosted C5.0 is proposed. The proposed classification model consists of two phases: cluster analysis and classification. In cluster analysis, affinity propagation algorithm is used to define the number of clusters, and then the k-means clustering is utilized to select the border and informative samples. In the classification phase, C5.0 algorithm is used in conjunction with boosting technical, owing to leverage the strength of the individual classifiers. The proposed algorithm is assessed by 14 benchmark imbalanced data sets taken from UCI dataset repository. The extensive experimental results on different imbalanced datasets demonstrated that the proposed algorithm can achieve better classification performance in terms of Matthews’ Correlation Coefficient (MCC) as compared to other existing imbalanced dataset classification algorithms.
Network Isolation in Electrical Vehicle Charging Station

Network isolation system (NIS) can help electrical vehicle charging station (EVCS) to exchange messages with different systems (such as central monitor system, battery package and electrical vehicle (EV)) in a secure and efficient way. This paper focuses on the structure of EVCS, and then analyzes the boundaries of the trusted and the untrusted areas. On the top boundary, EVCS can communicate with the central monitor system. On bottom boundary, EVCS can communicate with EVs or battery packages. Based on this demarcation, this paper proposes the NIS architecture for EVCS. <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>There is plenty of exploitable energy in the ambient environments. Triboelectric nanogenerator is an innovative electricity generation technology to convert the wasted mechanical energy into electrical energy. However, the output of conventional triboelectric nanogenerators cannot be employed efficiently because their tremendous internal resistance limits the current of electrons. Inspired by the principle of lightning rods, for the first time we propose the utilization of electrostatic discharge to improve the performance of triboelectric nanogenerators, which is realized by an opposite needles structure enclosed in an inert atmosphere. When this structure is connected in series with a vertical contact-separation triboelectric nanogenerator, the strong electric field near tips of two needles ionizes the gas around them, forming a conductive plasma channel between the tips, and releasing a mass of free charges. As a result, some exciting performances are obtained in triboelectric nanogenerator. The output peak-to-peak voltage is increased from 300 V to 1300 V, and the equivalent impedance of energy harvesting circuit is reduced from 100 MΩ to 10 kΩ. Especially in the optimal conditions, the maximum continuous power can even be significantly improved by 330.76%. Therefore, this work provides a new strategy for the energy conversion technology, which is significant for the advancement and application of triboelectric nanogenerators.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A strategy is proposed to improve the performance of triboelectric nanogenerators. </LI> <LI> The maximum continuous power can be boosted dramatically by electrostatic discharge. </LI> <LI> This design reduces the optimal impedance that is important for circuit matching. </LI> <LI> With this design triboelectric nanogenerators can directly drive low-power devices. </LI> <LI> This work is also significant for macro-energy conversion, such as ocean energy. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

The land subsidence poses a nonnegligible threat to production and life, especially in dredger fill area. The essence of land subsidence is soil consolidation. Better evaluation of the degree of soil consolidation presents significant progress for predicting land subsidence. In this study, SBAS-InSAR was conducted to Chenjia town, the typical dredger fill area in Chongming East Shoal, Shanghai. SAR data and precise Orbit data were collected from the ESA satellite Sentinel-1 in recent 2 years with approximately one month intervals. the relationship curve of cumulative subsidence with time is obtained after processing. On this basis, the final settlement and soil consolidation can be estimated by applying the method proposed by Professor Huang Wenxi of China. The results show that: The subsidence rate is faster than 20 mm/a; The estimated final settlement is 26.6-52.9 mm, and the corresponding consolidation degree is 54.6 % on average; Soil mass has not yet been fully consolidated and it still takes a long time to achieve stability. In conclusion, the method proposed in this study can provide a clearer understanding of the consolidation degree, and a new reference for the evaluation and prevention of land subsidence. Future research will focus on longer monitoring time to enrich and improve the method. Konjac Glucomannan Derived Carbon Aerogels for Multifunctional Applications

Environmental and energy issues have always been a hot topic of global research. Oil leakage has caused great damage to the environment, affecting a wide area and it is difficult to clean up. In most cases, carbon-based adsorbents are typically utilized to remove oil spills because of their economic benefits and high adsorbent efficiency. At the same time, its excellent material properties can also be used for the preparation of supercapacitors. In this paper, the carbon aerogels were prepared by the one-step method. The prepared materials endowed a 3D network structure with a huge number of micropores and mesoporous, and the material is light-weight, stable, hydrophobic and has affinity for oil (17.02 g/g) to the KGM carbon aerogel. Through the physicchemical characterization, the KGM carbon aerogel shows specific surface area is 689m2/g, high water contact angle (136.64°) and excellent reusability (more than 15 cycle times). In addition, we also discussed the electrochemical properties of the material and obtained the specific electrical capacity of 139 F/g under the condition of 1 A/g.
