Numerical Analysis and Load-Carrying Capacity Estimation of Reinforced Concrete Slab Culvert Rehabilitated with a Grouted Corrugated Steel Plate

        Li Bai-Jian,Fu Wen-Qiang,Fu Xin-Sha,Huang Yan 한국강구조학회 2023 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.23 No.4

Two laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the mechanical properties and develop a load-carrying capacity estimation method for reinforced concrete (RC) slab culverts rehabilitated with a grouted corrugated steel plate (CSP). Subsequently, 216 numerical models of RC slab culverts rehabilitated with different shapes of CSPs and grout strengths were established to investigate the influence of these parameters and the arch effect on the rehabilitated system. A mechanical model was proposed based on the elastic center method, and a load-carrying capacity estimation method of RC slab culverts rehabilitated with grouted CSPs was established and verified. It was concluded that the load-carrying capacity of the rehabilitated system increased with a decrease in the radius of the side walls and crown at a constant radius of the CSP haunch. At a constant radius of the side walls and CSP crown, the load-carrying capacity of the rehabilitated system increased with an increase in the haunch radius. The most effective way to improve the load-carrying capacity of the rehabilitated system was to increase the radius of the haunches and reduce the radius of the arch crown and side wall. The arch effect of the grout was related to the load type. The load-carrying capacity of the rehabilitated system was the highest when the CSP was similar to or the same as the arch axes of the grout. The most important function of the grout was to provide strong lateral restraint for the CSP, reducing the required span and improving the load-carrying capacity of the CSP. In addition, the shear strength of the grout contributed to improving the load-carrying capacity by exerting an arch effect or experiencing shear failure. The proposed load-carrying capacity estimation method is applicable to rehabilitated systems with a box or arch-type CSP. Our findings provide guidance for engineers to design similar rehabilitated systems.

      • Association of CYP2C19 Polymorphisms with Survival of Breast Cancer Patients Using Tamoxifen: Results of a Meta-analysis

        Bai, Lan,He, Juan,He, Gong-Hao,He, Jian-Chang,Xu, Fan,Xu, Gui-Li Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.19

Background: Previous studies accessing the association of CYP2C19 with outcomes of patients using tamoxifen for breast cancer have yielded conflicting results. The aim of this meta-analysis is to obtain a more precise estimate of effects of CYP2C19 polymorphisms and to clarify their effects on survival of the breast cancer patients using tamoxifen. Materials and Methods: A systematic search of PubMed and Embase was performed, comparing patients with or without $CYP2C19^*2$ and $CYP2C19^*17$, relevant articles searched for. The following outcomes were included from the eligible studies: disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS), expressed by hazard ratios (HR) with corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI). Subgroup analysis by genotypes was also performed. Pooled estimates were calculated using random-effect model in accordance to the heterogeneity. Results: Six studies met the inclusion criteria. The integrated OR on the association between CYP2C19 and DFS, calculated by the random-effect model, was 0.54 (95%CI=0.34-0.84, p=0.013). Subgroup analysis showed that both $CYP2C19^*2$ and $CYP2C19^*17$ were associated with increased survival. The pooled results of two studies for OS were OR=0.46 (95%CI=0.21-1.01, p=0.233). Conclusions: This meta-analysis suggests that the $CYP2C19^*2$ and $CYP2C19^*17$ genotypes are associated with increased survival in breast cancer patients using tamoxifen.

Effect of UV on Stability of Collagen with Consideration of Hydratation and Fibrillogenesis

        Jian-Yu Xing,Bo Bai,Wen-Jiao Xue,Ming-Yan Yang 한국식품과학회 2013 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.22 No.5

Collagen is an abundant extracellular matrix protein that is widely used in the biomaterial, food, and medical fields. Most extracted collagen is soluble in acids and assembles into fibrils under neutral pH conditions. In order to study the effect of UV irradiation on the stability of collagen with consideration of hydratation and fibrillogenesis,UV irradiation of collagen under acid and neutral pH conditions was investigated using electrophoresis, turbidity analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The relationship between the collagen structure and sensitivity to UV radiation was assessed by studying the effect of UV on collagen under different pH conditions. Results showed that structural changes in collagen caused by UV depend on the degree of hydratation. Soluble collagen completely loses fibrillogeneic ability after exposure to UV for 40 min. Fibrillogenesis of collagen can relieve the UV effect to some degree.

Research on damage and identification of mortise-tenon joints stiffness in ancient wooden buildings based on shaking table test

        Jian-yang Xue,Fuyu Bai,Liangjie Qi,Yan Sui,Chaofeng Zhou 국제구조공학회 2018 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.65 No.5

Based on the shaking table tests of a 1:3.52 scale one-bay and one-story ancient wooden structure, a simplified structural mechanics model was established, and the structural state equation and observation equation were deduced. Under the action of seismic waves, the damage rule of initial stiffness and yield stiffness of the joint was obtained. The force hammer percussion test and finite element calculations were carried out, and the structural response was obtained. Considering the 5% noise disturbance in the laboratory environment, the stiffness parameters of the mortise-tenon joint were identified by the partial least squares of singular value decomposition (PLS-SVD) and the Extended Kalman filter (EKF) method. The results show that dynamic and static cohesion method, PLS-SVD, and EKF method can be used to identify the damage degree of structures, and the stiffness of the mortise-tenon joints under strong earthquakes is reduced step by step. Using the proposed model, the identified error of the initial stiffness is about 0.58%-1.28%, and the error of the yield stiffness is about 0.44%-1.21%. This method has high accuracy and good applicability for identifying the initial stiffness and yield stiffness of the joints. The identification method and research results can provide a reference for monitoring and evaluating actual engineering structures.

      • Predictive Role of GSTs on the Prognosis of Breast Cancer Patients with Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy

        Bai, Yun-Lu,Zhou, Bing,Jing, Xiao-Yue,Zhang, Bin,Huo, Xiao-Qing,Ma, Chao,He, Jian-Miao Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.10

Objective: To evaluate the predictive value of GST gene polymorphisms with regard to prognosis of breast cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Methods: A total of 159 patients were included in our study between January 2005 and January 2007. All the patients were followed up until January 2012. Genotyping was based upon the duplex polymerase-chain-reaction with the PCR-CTPP method. Results: Patients with null GSTM1 and GSTP1 Val/Val genotypes had significantly had better response rates to chemotherapy when compared with non-null GSTM1 and GSTP1 Ile/Ile genotypes (OR=1.96 and OR=2.14, respectively). Patients with the GSTM1 null genotype had a longer average survival time and significantly lower risk of death than did those with non-null genotypes (HR=0.66). Similarly, those carrying the GSTP1 Val/Val genotype had 0.54-fold the risk of death of those with GSTP1 Ile/Ile (HR=0.54). Conclusion: A significant association was found between GSTM1 and GSTP1 gene polymorphisms and clinical outcomes in breast cancer cases.

Robust Control of Discrete-time Singular Markovian Jump Systems with Partly Unknown Transition Probabilities by Static Output Feedback

        Jian-Hua Wang,Qing-Ling Zhang,Fang Bai 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2015 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.13 No.6

This paper considers the robust control of discrete-time uncertain singular Markovian jump systems with partially unknown transition probabilities by static output feedback. Based on a necessary and sufficient condition of the stochastic stability with partially unknown transition probabilities of the unforced systems, some sufficient conditions are obtained to design of a static output feedback controller and a robust static output feedback controller, which guarantee that the closed-loop systems are piecewise regular, causal and stochastically stable by employing the linear matrix inequality technique. Finally, some examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Drilling off the Petrosal Apex and Opening the Upper Wall of Meckel's Cave Are the Key Elements of Good Outcomes in the Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia Secondary to Petrous Apex Meningioma

Bai, Jie,Zhou, Yufan,Song, Gang,Ren, Jian,Xiao, Xinru The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2022 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.65 No.3

Objective : The surgical management of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) caused by petrous apex meningioma (PAM) is still a challenge because of the lesion's deep location and the surrounding complex structures. The authors describe the intradural anterior transpetrosal approach (ATPA) and its effect on the treatment of TN secondary to PAM. Methods : A retrospective analysis of 15 patients with TN secondary to PAM who underwent surgery via the intradural ATPA was conducted. The key techniques, which included drilling off the petrosal apex (PA) and opening the upper wall of Meckel's cave (MC), are described in detail. Results : Total removal of the tumor and complete pain relief (Barrow Neurological Institute I) were achieved in all 15 patients without significant morbidity. Five patients developed new facial numbness postoperatively, which disappeared within three months after surgery. The postoperative magnetic resonance imaging showed temporal lobe swelling in three patients, but no clinical symptoms. One patient had cerebrospinal fluid leakage and was managed with bed rest and temporary lumbar drainage. One patient had an intracranial infection and was treated with antibiotics. By the last follow up, no patients had pain relapse or/and tumor recurrence. It is worth noting that the vascular compression at the root of the trigeminal nerve was found in one patient during the operation. Conclusion : Our experience suggests that drilling off the PA and opening the upper wall of the MC are key elements for a good outcome of the treatment of TN secondary to PAM. The intradural ATPA has the advantages for both tumor resection and pain relief.
