Progresses and Challenges of Machine Learning Approaches in Thermochemical Processes for Bioenergy: A Review

Ogunsola Nafiu Olanrewaju,오승석,전필립,Ling Jester Lih Jie,박현준,박한샘,이하은,손정민,이시훈 한국화학공학회 2024 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.41 No.7

Thermochemical conversions of nonedible biomass into energy are promising alternatives for ensuring a sustainable energy society. However, determining the optimum design and operating conditions of the processes remains a major challenge due to the laborious and costly experimental methods. Machine learning techniques are cost-eff ective and non-time consuming and have been widely utilized in thermochemical conversion process modelling with robust and accurate results and solutions. Nonetheless, no standard method has been proposed for applying ML models to biomass thermochemical processes. Consequently, the general development procedure for ML models with high accuracy and robustness remains unclear. This review provides a comprehensive review of machine learning techniques for predicting biofuel yield and composition. It is recommended that quality datasets be ensured to enable the development of more robust machine learning-aided models for practical engineering applications. Finally, solutions to the identifi ed challenges and prospective future research directions on machine learning-based biomass thermochemical conversion processes are recommended to accelerate the optimization and large-scale deployment of these processes.

유동층 공정을 이용한 열화학적 전환 공정의 최신 개발 동향

        박현준,오승석,Ogunsola Nafiu Olanrewaju,Jester Lih Jie Ling,정철승,박한샘,이시훈 한국화학공학회 2023 Korean Chemical Engineering Research(HWAHAK KONGHA Vol.61 No.1

Increasing of energy demand due to the rapid growth of global population and the development of world economy has inevitably resulted in the continuously increase of fossil fuel usage in the world. However, highly dependence on fossil fuels has necessarily brought about critical environmental issues and challenges such as severe air pollutions and rapid global warming. In order to settle these environmental and energy problems, clean energy generations in the conventional combustion processes have widely adapted in the world. In particular, novel thermochemical conversion processes such as pyrolysis and gasification have rapidly been applied for generating clean energy. Fluidized bed technologies having advantages such as various fuel use, easy continuous operation, high heat and material transfer, isothermal operation, and lower operation temperature are widely adopted and used because they are suitable for thermochemical energy conversion. The latest research trends and important findings in the thermo-chemical conversion process with fluidized bed technologies are summarized in this review. Also, the need for research such as layered materials and substances to reduce fine dust (biomass, natural resource waste, etc.) was suggested. Through this, it is intended to increase interest and understanding in fluidized bed technology and to present directions for solving future challenges in fluidized bed process technology development.

에너지 부문의 탄소중립 달성을 위한 국내외 시나리오 분석 및 기술, 정책현황 고찰

이시훈,박한샘,안재원,이하은,박현준,오승석,Jester Lih Jie Ling 한국화학공학회 2023 Korean Chemical Engineering Research(HWAHAK KONGHA Vol.61 No.4

Countries worldwide are striving to find new sources of sustainable energy without carbon emission due to the increasing impact of global warming. With the advancement of the fourth industrial revolution on a global scale, there has been a substantial rise in energy demand. Simultaneously, there is a growing emphasis on utilizing energy sources with minimal or zero carbon content to ensure a stable power supply while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In this comprehensive overview, a comparative analysis of carbon reduction policies of government was conducted. Based on international carbon neutrality scenarios and the presence of remaining thermal power generation, it can be categorized into two types: "Rapid" and "Safety”. For the domestic scenario, the projected power demand and current greenhouse gas emissions in alignment with “The 10th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand” was examined. Considering all these factors, an overview of the current status of carbon neutrality technologies by focusing on the energy sector, encompassing transitions, hydrogen, transportation and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) was offered followed by summarization of key technological trends and government-driven policies. Furthermore, the central aspects of the domestic carbon reduction strategy were proposed by taking account of current mega trends in the energy sector which are highlighted in international scenario analyses.
