Objective : Hemorrhagic transformation (HT) can be occurred after acute cerebral infarction. HT can worse symptoms in severe cases and adversely affect long-term prognosis. As bone and vascular smooth muscle are composed of type 1 collagen, we aimed to identify a potential relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and HT after acute cardioembolic stroke. Methods : As an indicator of BMD, we used mean frontal skull Hounsfield unit (HU) values on brain computed tomography (CT). Multivariative hazard ratios were calculated using Cox regression analysis to identify whether the osteoporotic condition was an independent predictor of HT after acute cardioembolic stroke. Results : This 11-year analysis enrolled 506 patients who diagnosed as acute cardioembolic infarction. The first tertile of skull HU value was an independent predictor of HT development compared to the third tertile (hazard ratio, 2.12; 95% confidence interval, 1.13-3.98; p=0.020). We observed no interactions between age and skull HU with respect to HT statistically. Conclusion : The results of this study revealed an association between osteoporotic conditions and HT development after acute cardioembolic stroke. A convenient method to measure the cancellous bone HU value of the frontal skull using brain CT images may be useful for predicting HT in patients with acute cerebral infarction.

Despite the extensive literature on marine algae over the past few decades, a paucity of published research and studies exists on red algae. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential therapeutic properties of the ethanol extract of the red alga Callophyllis japonica against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophage inflammation. The C. japonica extract (CJE) significantly inhibited the nitric oxide (NO) production and the induced dose-dependent reduction of the protein and mRNA levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2. Additionally, the CJE reduced the mRNA levels of inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$, interleukin (IL)-$1{\beta}$, and IL-6. We investigated the mechanism by which the CJE inhibits NO by examining the level of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) activation, which is an inflammation-induced signaling pathway in macrophages. The CJE significantly suppressed the LPS-induced phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase, extracellular signal-regulated kinase and p38 MAPK. Taken together, the results of this study demonstrate that the CJE inhibits LPS-induced inflammation by blocking the MAPK pathway in macrophages.
Curvature tailoring of unsymmetric laminates with an initial curvature
Ryu, Junghyun,Kong, Jung-Pyo,Kim, Seung-Won,Koh, Je-Sung,Cho, Kyu-Jin,Cho, Maenghyo SAGE Publications 2013 Journal of composite materials Vol.47 No.25

An unsymmetric laminated composite having bi-stability is interesting as a morphing structure because it can sustain large deformation without energy supply and the deformed state is stable. Especially, inducing different curvature values at each stable state is important for the practical application of unsymmetric laminates. In this study, we propose a method for tailoring the curvature of unsymmetric cross-ply laminates by curing the composite on a curved tool plate. The results show that the final normal curvature tensor of unsymmetric laminates is the summation of the tool plate curvature tensor and the normal curvature tensor of the laminates.

Aim: We investigated the therapeutic effects of a mitogen-activated protein (MEK) inhibitor, selumetinib, in a hepatic melanoma metastasis model and studied its possible mechanism of action. Materials and Methods: Melanoma cell lines were exposed to selumetinib under different experimental conditions. We established a mouse model of liver metastasis and treated mice orally with vehicle or selumetinib and then evaluated metastasis progress. Results: Growth inhibition was observed in melanoma cells as a consequence of G(1)-phase cell-cycle arrest and the subsequent induction of apoptosis in a doseand time-dependent manner. Mice with established liver metastases that were treated with selumetinib exhibited significantly less tumor progression than vehicle-treated mice. c-Myc expression in metastasized liver tissues were suppressed by selumetinib. Moreover, oral treatment with selumetinib modulated expression of epithelial-tomesenchymal transition-and metastasis-related genes, including integrin alpha-5 (ITGA5), jagged 1 (JAG1), zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1), NOTCH, and serpin peptidase inhibitor clade E (SERPINE1). Conclusion: We established a mouse model of hepatic metastasis using a human melanoma cell line, such models are essential in elucidating the therapeutic effects of anti-metastatic drugs. Our data suggest the possibility that selumetinib presents a new strategy to treat liver metastasis in patients with melanoma by suppressing epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition-related genes.

Amyloid Arthropathy of the Hip Joint Associated with Multiple Myeloma: A Case Report

Amyloidosis is a disease characterized by the deposition of non-soluble fibrous protein in multiple tissues with a number of possible causes. This protein deposition can occur in any tissue, yet is most commonly seen in kidneys, heart, and gastrointestinal tracts. However, invasion to bone tissues is not often reported. The deposition of amyloid proteins in bone tissues may result in joint pain and pathological fractures; it is important to elucidate the causes and detect early to determine prognosis and treat optimally. In the present case report, with relevant literature review, the authors report a case of total hip arthroplasty in an amyloidosis patient.
