In this paper, I argue that while area studies in the United States has declined since the end of the Cold War, its area impulse of has emerged in other fields of inquiry, particularly Asian-American Studies. Accordingly, I explain how the collective reflections of Filipino-American scholars on empire, migration, diaspora, and identity point to the consolidation and viability of the transpacific as an area, which spans both the United States and the Philippines. Addressing several problems with this straddling―mainly as criticisms of Filipino-American Studies―I show how the transpacific serves as a bridge between Philippine Studies and Filipino-American Studies, and helps define the boundaries and overlaps between both fields of inquiry.
Cautious View on Network Coding – From Theory to Practice

Energy consumption has been mostly neglected in network coding (NC) research so far. This work investigates several different properties of NC that influence the energy consumption and thus are important when designing NC systems for batterydriven devices. Different approaches to the necessary implementation of coding operations and Galois fields arithmetic are considered and complexity expressions for coding operations are provided. We also benchmark our own mobile phone implementation on a Nokia N95 under different settings. Several NC strategies are described and compared, furthermore expressions for transmission times are developed. It is also shown that the use of NC introduces a trade off between reduction in transmission time and increase in energy consumption.

Three series of mesoporous adsorbents designed for removal of methyl ethyl ketone vapor (MEK) weresynthesized: MCM-41 was decorated with various amounts of novolac resin (Nov) and polyacrylonitrile(PAN), while SBA-15 was modified with PAN. The composites were thermally activated towards anenhancement of MEK adsorption capacity and tested in afixed bed adsorber. Structural features of parentsilicas were investigated by XRD, while textural parameters of the composites were studied by low-temperature nitrogen adsorption. A surface composition was examined by DRIFT and XPS. It was foundthat decoration of the silica surface with small amounts of PAN improved the monolayer adsorptioncapacity. The MEK breakthrough curves and desorption profiles were employed for calculation of themonolayer capacity and total pore volume (VtotalMEK). The VtotalMEK for the materials with smaller pores(MCM-41) were comparable to those determined by nitrogen adsorption, whereas respective values forthe solids with larger pores (SBA-15) were underestimated. The mechanism of adsorption of MEK ontothe adsorbents was elucidated. The MEK molecules were adsorbed solely in the form of keto tautomer. The enhanced MEK adsorption capacity came from the beneficial textural features of the support and thepresence of a ladder-type PAN structure containing O-groups.

A series of mesoporous silicas with bimodal porosity combining the features of broad-mesoporousSBA-15 and narrow-mesoporous MCM-41 was synthesized by the pseudomorphic transformation ofSBA-15. The pore size of the MCM-41-like fraction was adjusted using different quaternary ammoniumsalts, while the degree of pseudomorphic transformation was tuned by the alkalinity of the mother-silicadissolving agent. The produced silicas were applied as hard templates for the synthesis of carbon replicasby nanocasting. The mechanism of pseudomorphic transformation of mesoporous silica was for thefirsttime investigated non-directly, employing the strategy of inverse carbon nanoreplication followed bycomprehensive study of the textural and structural parameters of replicas with regard to silica matrices. It was found that the conversion of SBA-15 into MCM-41 occurs simultaneously throughout the entireparticle’s body according to the mechanism of homogeneous pseudomorphic transformation. It wasevidenced that the strategy of inverse carbon replication could be successfully employed as an ingenioustool for non-direct investigation of suchlike silica transformations towards hierarchical porous systems. Furthermore, the unique bimodal mesoporosity of the carbons obtained from SBA-15 partiallytransformed into MCM-41 opens a possibility for their application in a variety of purposes, mainly incatalysis and adsorption.

Real Exchange Rate Volatility, Economic Growth and the Euro

This paper studies the impact of real effective exchange rate volatility on economic growth as well as the euro’s impact on real effective exchange rate volatility. We first show that after a plausible endogeneity correction, real effective exchange rate volatility is negatively associated with growth in a 1980~2011 panel of the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries. A one standard deviation volatility decrease is associated with a two percentage points growth increase. Second, we find that the euro adoption was associated with a decline of 0.4 standard deviations in long-run real effective exchange rate volatility before the Great Recession in 2008~2009. Moreover, while the Great Recession increased real effective exchange rate volatility by 38~189% of the sample mean for the countries outside the eurozone, the real effective exchange rate of the euro adopters were almost completely insulated. We conclude that real effective exchange rate stability may be growth-enhancing in the OECD countries and that the euro have played a growth-enhancing role at least before the recent eurozone debt crisis.
