Innovative design with TRIZ and functional modeling

Many design methods of mechanical product are based on a functional modeling of the system. These function-based design methodologies use decomposed functions to match the functions to physical parts. However, it is somewhat difficult making innovative design to use only functional approach. This paper describes the design process of a train bogie with a design expert system with function taxonomy and TRIZ that enables innovative design. The functional model of a new brake system in the bogie is made with the design process.

Egg grading machine is used in classifying eggs by their weight and in packing them. Packer holder mechanism is main part of the egg grading machine, of which main role is to deliver eggs vertically from conveyor belt to mold tray. This paper describes the design of cam mechanism in packer holder and measurement of its noise and acceleration. Several cams, that are designed and manufactured by the author of this paper, are compared in terms of their functionality of moving eggs.

Egg grading machine is used in poultry raising industry to classify eggs by their weight and to pack up them. Packer holder mechanism is a main part of the egg grading machine, of which role is to take eggs fallen from conveyor belt, and afterward to transfer eggs vertically to mold tray. The vertical motion of packer holder is usually driven by slider-crank mechanism or cam. This paper describes development of the cam in packer holder based on kinematic analysis of packer holder mechanism and measurement of acceleration and noise of the cam to verify performance of it. Several cams that are designed and manufactured by the author of this paper according to different design specification are compared to determine the best solution for egg transfer in the packer holder mechanism.

Every products, which made by mass production, is not identical in their size but have variations in some intervals specified by tolerance dimensions. Tolerances play major role in standardization of part and its quality, and also make a huge impact on manufacturing cost. The optimal condition for tolerances is giving the values as loose as possible for low production cost while satisfying quality specification, which usually demand tight control of tolerances . Tolerance analysis is necessary to get an optimal solution for this conflict situation. This paper have studied tolerance analysis for universal joint assembly of vehicle steering system and tried to find useful results of the study for product design and quality control.

Snow removal system is named for machinery which manages roads for passing of pedestrians and automobiles when snow is piled up on the road. This paper studies configuration design of snow removal system that has several functions-melting snow in the street without moving it to other place, transferring snow to the melter and cleaning road by spraying water for cleaning road. These sorts of functions are analyzed by function decomposition method of Kirshman and Fadel and, based upon which, machine parts are selected. Layout design would follow functional design to testify if the selected component satisfies space which is allowed by constraints.
Effects of Vanadium Carbides on Hydrogen Embrittlement of Tempered Martensitic Steel

Precipitation of V carbides is known to suppress the hydrogen-embrittlement (HE) phenomenon as well as to increase material strength. Despite increasing attention to V carbides, there have been few systematic and quantitative investigations on their effects on HE resistance. This study reveals the role of V carbides on the HE behavior of tempered martensitic steel while eliminating other factors, such as chemical composition of other elements, mechanical strength, and dislocation density. The amount of trapped hydrogen increased with increasing V content, whereas the best HE resistance was attained at 0.2 wt% V and it decreased with further V addition. V carbide was considered as a non-diffusible hydrogen-trapping site in this study. However, excessive V content led to the formation of large undissolved carbides that gave rise to brittle fracture and decreased HE resistance. This study suggests that improved HE resistance can be achieved by minimizing the size and amount of undissolved V carbides.
