      • The Impact of Daily Functions Associated with Limited Access to Health Care and Experience of Frustration on Subjective Depression among Low-income Married Women

        Jaeyeon Kang,Sunju Sohn 중소기업융합학회 2015 중소기업융합학회 국제학술대회논문집 Vol.2 No.1

In Korea, married women’s utilization of medical and/or mental health services have gradually risen, particularly in terms of increased prevalence of depression that doubles their counterparts. Low-income individuals, however, are reported to experience greater dissatisfaction of medical needs. Given the rapidly growing have-not populations, the unmet medical and mental needs are expected to rise even higher. In fact, in a recent study using the 2011 Korea Health Panel (KHP) Data, one of the major reasons for not seeking medical attention were lack of time and money. The problem is that delayed medical treatment leads to more serious problems thus contributes to limited daily functions, which can also result in psychological distress, frustration, and care burden. This study examined the role of income, frequency of daily malfunctions due to limited access to health care, experience of frustration on married women’s subjective evaluation of their depression and anxiety. Based on a secondary analysis using the 2011 KHP data, this study adopted a confirmatory approach in testing a structural equation model (SEM) involving these key factors, controlling for subjects’ education level. The sample included 2,764 married women between the ages of 25 and 65. Multiple fit indices including χ², CMIN, CFI, and RMSEA were used to assess the model fit. Because Chi-square has its own issues related to making type II errors for larger samples, this study used other four indices to determine the model fit. Results showed a consistent satisfactory model fit [(Model χ² (10)=71.953, p<.01, CMIN/df=7.1953, CFI =.956, RMSEA=.047)]. The present CFI value is .956, indicating that the hypothesized model adequately represents the data. The RMSEA value is .047 which also indicates a good fit (<.05). Based on path coefficient results, it is fair to conclude that the lower the income, the greater (or frequent) individuals are likely to experience daily functional issues associated with unmet medical needs, experience greater frustration, and in turn, experience greater depression and anxiety issues. Implications include the need to pay greater attention to lowincome families in keeping up with their medical needs to further prevent from deteriorating mental health.

      • Temporal changes of Korean cicada in relation to meteorological factors

        Jaeyeon Kang,Heejo Lee,Youngdon Ju,Bosun Park,Noori Choi,Pureum Noh,Eunok lee,Gilsang Jeong 한국응용곤충학회 2016 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2016 No.04

In every summer, cicadas emerge and become numerically and ecologically dominant in Korean penninsula. Especially, cicada emergence is affected by the environmental factors. In order to evaluate the effect of environmental factors in cicada species, we analyzed the temporal changes in cicada exuviae based on meteorological and non-meteorological factors such as artificial light intensity and habitat characters on urban park area surrounded by residential houses. Combined multivariate analyses with a cluster analysis and a principal component analysis (PCA) were conducted. Samples were classified into 3 different cluster based on differences of meteorological factors such as temperature and humidity. Moreover, Random Forest model (RF) showed a high predictability of daily mean temperature on species peak abundance. These results provide a strong evidence that meteorological factors have significant effects on cicada emergences. Regarding the non-meteorological factors, we found no relationship in cicada emergence.

      • Concepts and Methods of Large-scale Ecological Data Collection for a Citizen Science Project

        Jaeyeon Kang,Eunjae Jang,Yikweon Jang 한국응용곤충학회 2013 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2013 No.04

Collection of ecological data such as the temporo-spatial distribution of a species is very difficult, due to broad distribution over large areas, phenology, and lack of resources for field survey. Citizen science, which is a cooperative scientific endeavor between researchers and interested citizens, is ideal for collecting large-scale ecological data. However, lack of proper equipment, species identification, and/or communication between researchers and participants are hindrance for a successful citizen science project. Here, we introduce the concept and methods of large-scale ecological data collection using smartphone apps. Most of the ecological data typically consist of sound or video recording, picture, geographic coordinate, and notes. There are several apps that can collect some or all of these ecological data. Furthermore, the result of a survey can be reported to researchers using Google Docs. The data collected by non-specialists can be validated by cross-checking of the survey report by Google Docs and the ecological data sent by apps. Finally, we report the results of a citizen science project in which temporo-spatial distributions of cicada species in Korea were studied via smartphone apps and Google Docs.

      • Chorus Dynamics and Acoustic Interaction in the Multi-species Cicada

        Jaeyeon Kang,Yikweon Jang 한국응용곤충학회 2014 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2014 No.10

Five species of the subfamily Cicadinae are found in urban areas at the center of the Korean peninsula, including Cryptotympana atrata, Hyalessa fuscata, Meimuna mongolica, Meimuna opalifera and Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata. Out of those species, the densities of C. atrata and H. fuscata are generally high in the urban area. I hypothesized that there is a vigorous acoustic interaction where two species are abundant. We tested this hypothesis by conducting the 24-h recording experiments in four localities: Gwacheon(GC), Jamsil(JS), Ewha University(EU) and Yangpyeong(YP). Based on the preliminary enumeration surveys of exuviae, GC and JS were designated as high density localities and EU and JS were as low density localities. The results of 24-h recordings and abiotic factor based on the multinomial logistic regression showed that C. atrata and H. fuscata were negatively correlated in high density area GC and JS. In JS and EU, the density of H. fuscata is close to each other. However, the probability of chorusing in JS is significantly lower than EU. This might be due to acoustic competition between two species. Moreover, we confirmed that the choruses of males of C. atrata produced loud choruses usually during the day when temperature high and males of H. fuscata produced calling song throughout the day but peaked in the morning and night. Consequently, multi-species cicada in different temporal pattern probably cannot be explained by only acoustic interaction but the combination of both abiotic and biotic factors probably constrain multi-species cicada to call together during the limited time windows.

      • Divergence dating of the two wing morphs in Vollenhovia emeryi (Hymenoptera: Myrmicinae)

        Pureum Noh,Jaeyeon Kang,Jae Chun Choe,Gilsang Jeong 한국응용곤충학회 2015 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2015 No.04

Vollenhovia emeryi (Hymenoptera: Myrmicinae) is dimorphic in its wing morphology of alate females: the long-winged and the short-winged. In our previous study, we found that the long-winged is ancestral and the short-winged is derived. Intriguingly, the former is infected with the intracellular symbiotic Wolbachia bacterium and the derived is void of the bacterium indicating that the latter somehow evolved resistance to the bacterium. This may be one of few cases in which transition from susceptibility to the bacterium can be traceable via the divergence estimation. As a consequence, we inferred that the two morphs diverged approximately quarter million years ago; a remarkably recent event in evolutionary perspective. In this presentation, we will further discuss genetic orchestration in the host insect and future research directions.

      • Wolbachia Infection Frequency in Some Korean ant Species

        Gilsang Jeong,Eunha Ko,Jaeyeon Kang,Jae Chun Choe 한국응용곤충학회 2014 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2014 No.10

The Wolbachia bacterium is one of the best studied reproductive manipulators found in variuos invertebrate taxa. Theoretically it infects two thirds of invertebrates. It is thought to have a huge impact on its hosts’ evolution. The ant is a very successful organism in terrestrial ecosystems especially with its charicteristic sociality. However, the influence of Wolbachia on the animal remains to be paid more attention. This study is to examine Wolbachia infection frequency in some ant species in Korea. The result shows that 9 out of 12 ant species harbor the bacterium. Furthermore, at least two species show polymorphism in their infection status at the colony level. This will be used as a foundation of further study on the interactions between the bacterium and ant species.

The Early Adjustment for Weeks 1-8 of Korean and Multicultural Children to Preschool Institutions

( Jaeyeon Oh ),( Sook Hyun Kang ) 한국유아교육학회 2014 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Vol.20 No.1

This article compares the early adjustment process of full-Korean and multicultural children to preschool institutions and investigates the levels of adjustment of these students week to week. A total of 29 Korean children and 29 multicultural students attending preschools in Gwangju, Jeonnam provinces were selected to participate in this research, and their early adjustment was measured each week for a total of eight weeks. At the end of eight weeks, a difference in adjustment levels to daily routines between Korean and multicultural children was made manifest, and it was apparent from the first week that multicultural students struggled with self-perception in comparison to Korean children. Also, through the repetitive daily routines of preschool, both Korean and multicultural children overcame struggles in adjusting to prosocial behavioral expectations and working with peers, and their levels of adjustment each week were very similar. Accordingly, the routine of preschool must be treated as the children’s first experience with social life, and an educational support for helping multicultural children adjust to their first stable routine and to overcome struggles with self-perception must be implemented.

      • Evaluating the applicability of 222Rn in groundwater as a tracer to monitor the migration of artificially injected CO₂ plume in shallow aquifer system

        Jaeyeon Kim,Kang-Kun Lee 대한지질학회 2021 대한지질학회 학술대회 Vol.2021 No.10

Monitoring migration and distribution of CO₂ plume in carbon capture and storage (CCS) project is important to detect potential CO₂ leakage in shallow groundwater system. Although 222Rn in soil gas was used as tracer to identify the CO₂ leakage in previous studies because CO₂ can carry 222Rn in groundwater and soil, 222Rn concentration in groundwater was not considered. Therefore, to evaluate the applicability of 222Rn in groundwater as tracer to monitor the CO₂ plume migration in shallow groundwater system, an artificial injection experiment of CO₂ was performed in Eumseong of South Korea. The research results were analyzed by two points of view: 1) the influence of CO₂ as the carrier gas on the variation of 222Rn concentrations in groundwater and 2) the influence of mixing processes on the distribution of 222Rn tracer induced by abrupt artificial CO₂-infused water injection. In the first point, 222Rn concentration data in most wells showed opposite change pattern compared to CO₂ gas indicating no influence of CO₂ as the carrier gas. Unlike these, one well (BS-9) showed high positive relationship between 222Rn and TIC, suggesting the applicability of 222Rn in groundwater as tracer to monitor CO₂ leakage. In the second point, the results showed that the spatio-temporal radon concentrations were distributed in association with the horizontal and vertical mixing processes by water injection into shallow groundwater system. The calculated results of mixing ratio also quantitatively supported this point. In results, this study indicate that 222Rn in groundwater can be applied to identify the flow characterization with the CO₂ plume migration induced by the CO₂-infused water injection. However, the high signal of 222Rn in groundwater, which means that 222Rn is sensitive to diffusive CO₂ plume, was represented in only one well (BS-9) compared to other wells. That is, for the conclusive evaluation of applicability of 222Rn in groundwater as tracer to monitor CO₂ plume migration, the further verification should be carried out with more field tests.
