        The Effects of Economic Growth on Environmental Quality: Some Empirical Investigation for the Case of South Korea

        We explore the relationship between economic growth and environmental quality in South Korea. Economic growth is found to generate environmental pressure. Interpretation of the estimated results in association with historical changes of Korean environmental policies suggests that the problems of SO₂, NO₂. TSP and BOD and domestic waste in South Korea exhibit inverted U-shape relationship with economic growth(i.e., environmental Kuznets curve). The turning point of the curve is located around early 1980s, when the Korean environmental regulation and policies became stricter and effective in practical manner. This evidence suggests that in South Korea environmental protection requires policies and investments to be put into place to reduce environmental degradation.

        The Effects of Environmental Policy on Endogenous Growth and Social Welfare

        This paper explores the effects of stricter domestic environ mental policy on economic growth rate and social welfare by incorporating environmental pollution and expenditure for pollution abatement and control into an endogenous growth model (Barro 1990) that emphasises the role of government spending as the engine of economic growth. The analysis shows that on a balanced growth path, the general negative growth effect of the more stringent environmental policy does not hold true for some specific cases. For some other cases, both economic growth rate and social welfare level are found to increase or decrease together as a result of the stricter environmental policy; and the possibility of a trade-off between economic growth and social welfare is also found.

        국내 산업부문의 전력ㆍ에너지 소비효율 비교ㆍ분석

        본 연구는 LMDI 방법론을 활용하여 산업부문 및 제조업 전력소비 변화의 요인을 분석하였다. 산업부문의 경우, 전체적으로 생산활동의 확대(생산효과)와 전력다소비업종으로의 산업구조 변화(구조효과)에 의해 전력소비가 증가하였으나, 미미하지만 전력소비효율이 향상(집약도효과)되는 효과도 발생한 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 제조업의 경우에는 생산활동 확대로 인한 전력소비 증가요인이 전체 산업부문과 비교하여 상대적으로 크게 발생한 반면, 조립금속업 중심으로의 제조업 구조변화로 인해 전력소비가 감소하는 구조효과가 발생하였다. 한편, 집약도효과는 제조업에서 오히려 전력소비를 증가시킨 것으로 나타났으며, 이러한 집약도효과는 전력을 포함하는 최종에너지 전체의 경우와 비교해서도 상대적으로 크게 발생한 것으로 분석되었다. 이와 같은 결과는 제조업에서의 전력소비 절감 및 효율향상을 위한 노력이 부족했음을 보여주는데, 특히 조립금속업종을 제외한 대부분의 제조업종에서 전력소비효율 향상을 위한 노력이 부족했다는 것이 업종별 집약도효과 분석을 통해 나타났다. This paper analysed the cause of the change of electricity and final energy consumption in industrial and manufacturing sectors by utilizing LMDI decomposition methodology. For industrial sector, the increase of power consumption was led by the expansion of production activities (activity effect) and the structural change toward power-intensive industries (structure effect). For manufacturing sector, however, the production effect in power consumption was larger than the case of industrial sector. On the other hand, the structure effect led the fall of power consumption, largely caused by the structural change towards fabricated metal industry. Meanwhile the intensity effect contributed to the increased of power consumption. These results indicate that efforts for saving and efficiency improvement in power consumption were insufficient in manufacturing sector.

        A Comparison of the Characteristics between Single and Double Finger Gestures for Web Browsers

        Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the characteristics of single and double finger gestures related on the web browser and to extract the appropriate finger gestures. Background: As electronic equipment emphasizes miniaturization for improving portability various interfaces are being developed as input devices. Electronic devices are made smaller, the gesture recognition technology using the touch-based interface is favored for easy editing. In addition, user focus primarily on the simplicity of intuitive interfaces which propels further research of gesture based interfaces. In particular, the fingers in these intuitive interfaces are simple and fast which are users friendly. Recently, the single and double finger gestures are becoming more popular so more applications for these gestures are being developed. However, systems and software that employ such finger gesture lack consistency in addition to having unclear standard and guideline development. Method: In order to learn the application of these gestures, we performed the sketch map method which happens to be a method for memory elicitation. In addition, we used the MIMA(Meaning in Mediated Action) method to evaluate gesture interface. Results: This study created appropriate gestures for intuitive judgment. We conducted a usability test which consisted of single and double finger gestures. The results showed that double finger gestures had less performance time faster than single finger gestures. Single finger gestures are a wide satisfaction difference between similar type and difference type. That is, single finger gestures can judge intuitively in a similar type but it is difficult to associate functions in difference type. Conclusion: This study was found that double finger gesture was effective to associate functions for web navigations. Especially, this double finger gesture could be effective on associating complex forms such as curve shaped gestures. Application: This study aimed to facilitate the design products which utilized finger and hand gestures.

        보로노이 다이어그램의 공간구축 가능성에 관한 연구-디지털 패브리케이션의 폴딩 기법을 중심으로-

        (연구배경 및 목적) 최근 건축을 포함한 예술 및 디자인 분야에서는 타 분야의 이론과 기술 등의 융합으로 경계가 사라지고 다양한 시도들이 이루어지고 있다. 건축 분야에서는 자연의 생성이론을 적용한 파라메트릭 디자인의 연구와 사례들이 등장하며 새로운 패러다임을 만들고 있다. 이 중 보로노이 다이어그램은 기하학 구조를 바탕으로 공간을 효율적으로 구성할 수 있으며 안정적인 구조와 조형의 미를 이룰 수 있는 이론이다. 하지만 패턴을 적용한 장식적 역할에서 크게 벗어나지 못하는 실정이며, 이를 적용한 공간구축의 연구는 많지 않다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 보로노이 다이어그램을 디지털 패브리케이션의 폴딩 기법을 적용한 구축 가능성을 검증하고자 한다. 이를 위해 디지털 패브리케이션의 프로세스를 적용하여 프로토타입의 파빌리온을 완성한다. (연구방법) 연구방법으로는 첫째, 문헌을 바탕으로 보로노이 다이어그램에 대해 정의하고, 이를 효과적으로 모델링 할 수 있는 시각적 프로그래밍 언어 방식인 그래스호퍼에 대해 고찰한다. 둘째, 보로노이 다이어그램을 구축할 기법으로 폴딩을 제시하고 이에 대해 고찰한다. 셋째, 디지털 패브리케이션의 프로세스에 따라 보로노이 다이어그램의 특성이 반영된 파빌리온을 모델링한다. 다음으로 CNC Laser로 평면의 종이를 가공하고, 이를 폴딩 기법으로 유닛을 제작한 뒤 프로토타입의 파빌리온을 구현한다. (결과) 보로노이 다이어그램은 반복적 자가증식, 자기조직화, 알고리즘적 진화의 표현 특성이 나타나며, 이 과정에서 각각 연속성, 유기성, 유연성이 나타났다. 이러한 특징을 반영하여 알고리즘을 작성한 결과 보로노이 다이어그램은 복잡한 형태에도 유닛을 변화시키며 빈틈없이 패턴을 형성한다. 폴딩은 선행연구를 바탕으로 주름잡기, 접기, 구기기, 구부리기의 유형으로 분류할 수 있으며, 유형 별 특징은 상이 하나 공통된 특성으로 연속성을 나타낸다. 또한, 디지털패브리케이션에서 폴딩은 재료의 효율적 활용이 가능하여 공간을 경량화하거나 다양한 방식으로 구축할 수 있는 특징이 있다. 이를 바탕으로 디지털 패브리케이션의 프로세스에 적용한 결과, 파빌리온의 유닛들은 유기적으로 연결되어 지정된 공간을 효율적으로 분할하고 있으며, 다각형의 유닛은 평면의 종이를 정교하게 가공하여 폴딩 기법으로 입체화할 수 있다. (결론) 본 연구에서는 보로노이 다이어그램을 입체화하는 방법으로 폴딩 기법을 제시하였으며, 더 나아가 디지털 패브리케이션을 통해 프로토타입의 파빌리온을 제작하는 일련의 과정을 실험하였다. 폴딩 기법으로 제작된 유닛들은 유기적으로 연결되며 구조적 견고성을 높였으며 경량화의 가능성도 확인할 수 있었다. 이 실험은 자연의 생성이론을 폴딩 기법을 적용하여 구축할 수 있는지에 대해 살펴보았다는 데에 의의가 있으며, 앞으로 디지털 패브리케이션 폴딩 기법의 활용방법을 모색하는 자료가 될 수 있을 것이라 기대한다. (Background and Purpose) In recent arts and design fields including architecture, the convergence with theories, technologies, etc. of other fields has broken bounds, and various attempts are being made. In the architectural area, studies and cases of parametric design applied with the generative theory of nature have emerged, creating a new paradigm. Among them, The Voronoi diagram is a theory allowing effective compositions of space and realization of stable structure and formative aesthetics based on a geometric constitution. However, it fails to go beyond the decorative role applied with patterns in the current state, and cases and studies on building spaces are lacking. Thus, this study aims to verify the possibilities of building the Voronoi diagram applied with the folding technique of digital fabrication. To this end, the process of digital fabrication is applied to complete a pavilion prototype. (Method) The Voronoi diagram is defined based on literature, and Grasshopper, a visual programming language method enabling effective modeling for this, is examined. Second, folding is proposed as the technique to build the Voronoi diagram, and this is examined. Third, a pavilion reflecting features of the Voronoi diagram is modeled according to the process of digital fabrication. Next, a flat paper is processed with CNC lasers and produced into a unit with the folding technique, and then, the pavilion prototype is embodied. (Results) The Voronoi diagram showed expressive features of repetitive self-replication, self-organization, and algorithmic evolution, and continuity, organicness, and flexibility were respectively displayed in the process. As a result of writing an algorithm reflecting these features. Folding can be classified into creasing, folding, crumpling, and bending based on preceding research, and commonly exhibited. Moreover, folding allows effective utilization of material in digital fabrication and has the features of lightweighting spaces. Applying folding to the process of digital fabrication based on this organically linked pavilion units and effectively divided designated spaces, and polygonal units could be dimensionalized by processing a flat paper exquisitely and using the folding technique. (Conclusions) This study suggested the folding technique as a way to dimensionalize the Voronoi diagram, and furthermore, experimented with a series of processes of creating a pavilion prototype through digital fabrication. Units produced with the folding technique were connected organically and heightened structural solidity, and the possibility of lightweighting could also be confirmed. This experiment has significance in examining whether it is feasible to build a generative theory of nature by applying the folding technique and is expected to serve as a material in seeking utilization methods of digital fabrication folding techniques in the future.

      • 상용차 운전자의 행동특성을 고려한 내장 설계 요구사항 도출

        Recently, the cabin of the commercial vehicle can be defined in a variety of ways from a driving space to an essential living area or even mobile office space. Thus, the research scope of commercial vehicle should be expanded to reflect a variety of customer activities and enhance usability in package design. The objective of this paper is to investigate the behavioral characteristics while commercial vehicle driving. The main user activities, a total of 59 relevant to commercial vehicle drivers, are selected and classified into three groups; critical, significant and moderate. The behavioral observation is also conducted to capture the important scene by recording the activities in cabin. By taking advantage of observations, the user requirements needed to improve high are derived. The results show that the driver's waist was bent too much when using the navigation system. In addition, the center-console causes a significant interference for movement between driver seat and rear-bed. The attractive package items and recommendations from the user-centric perspective can be made based on ergonomic evaluation.

      • A Study on Case of Ergonomic Evaluation using Data Mining Techniques

        Objective: The aim of this study is to analyze case of ergonomic evaluation using data mining techniques. Background: It is important to discover the hidden trends and patterns in large data. Data mining model is composed of four fundamental categories which are classification, clustering, combination and continuity. Decision Tree is to model the relationships that exist in data and find the rules from the relationships. Self-organizing feature map (SOFM) is a type of artificial neural network that is trained using unsupervised learning to produce two-dimensional, discretized representation of the input space of the training samples. Method: It is to evaluate perceived discomfort of working postures in terms of upper body when an external load varies. Eighteen subjects participated in an experiment of appraising perceived discomfort of varying upper body postures with three levels of external loads given. Results: The ANOVA results showed that the perceived discomfort of upper body postures was significantly affected by external load and upper body posture were significant. Also, it is able to understand the most affected variable and extract the rules on relationships between external load and joint angle of human body. In addition, working postures of upper body with respect to perceived discomfort are divided into eight groups using SOFM. Conclusion: It is need to use data mining techniques to analyze ergonomic evaluation data because it is possible to apply various cases of ergonomics.
