<P>OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to investigate the role of common variation in innate immunity-related genes as susceptibility factors to breast cancer risk in Korean women. METHODS: Total 1536 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 203 genes were analyzed by Illumina GoldenGate assay in 209 cases and the same numbers of controls. Both SNP and gene-based tests were used to evaluate the association with breast cancer risk. The robustness of results was further evaluated with permutation method, false discovery rate and haplotype analyses. RESULTS: Both SNP and gene-based analyses showed promising associations with breast cancer risk for 17 genes: OR10J3, FCER1A, NCF4, CNTNAP1, CTNNB1, KLKB1, ITGB2, ALOX12B, KLK2, IRAK3, KLK4, STAT6, NCF2, CCL1, C1QR1, MBP and NOS1. The most significant association with breast cancer risk was observed for the OR10J3 SNP (rs2494251, P-value = 1.2 x 10(-4)) and FCER1A SNP (rs7548864, P-value = 7.7 x 10(-4)). Gene-based permutation and false discovery rate P-values for OR10J3 SNP (rs2494251) with breast cancer risk were also significant (P = 4 x 10(-5) and 0.008, respectively). Haplotype analyses supported these findings that OR10J3 and FCER1A were most significantly associated with risk for breast cancer (P = 2 x 10(-4) and 0.004, respectively). CONCLUSION: This study suggests that common genetic variants in the OR10J3 and FCER1A be strongly associated with breast cancer risk among Korean women.</P>

Homoepitaxial layers grown by liquid phase epitaxy on hydrothermally grown ZnO bulk wafers are studied by means of temperature-dependent photoluminescence. The properties of the films are compared to those of hydrothermal ZnO substrates. The effect of Ga doping is studied. Liquid phase epitaxy is shown to be a promising method for achieving substantial variations of the electrical and the luminescent properties of ZnO.

The structural and the spectroscopic properties of a 2-inch ZnO epilayer grown by using molecular beam epitaxy are investigated. A 500-nm-thick substrate was grown on c-sappire by using a MgO buffer. In spite of the high dislocation density in the epilayer, temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements show only a small decrease in the luminescence intensity between 4 K and 300 K. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements reveal a decay time independent of temperature. Cathodoluminescence presents an inhomogeneous emission on a micrometric scale: a stronger emission is measured in small nanometric areas. A tentative explanation of this behavior is proposed.

<P><B>Objectives</B></P><P>Epidemiologic studies of occupational lead exposure have suggested increased risks of cancers of the brain, kidney, lung, meninges, and stomach; however, the totality of the evidence is inconsistent. To clarify whether lead is a carcinogen, we investigated the relationship between occupational lead exposure and risks of these five cancer sites in two prospective cohort studies in Shanghai, China.</P><P><B>Method</B></P><P>Annual job/industry-specific estimates of lead fume and lead dust exposure were derived from a statistical model that combined expert ratings of lead intensity with inspection measurements collected by the Shanghai Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. The job/industry estimates were applied to the lifetime work histories of subjects from the Shanghai Women’s Health Study (73 363 participants) and the Shanghai Men’s Health Study (61 379 participants) to estimate cumulative exposure to lead dust and lead fume. Cohort-specific relative hazard rate ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression models and then pooled using a random effects meta-analysis model.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>We observed a statistically significant increased risk of meningioma among individuals with estimated occupational exposure to lead dust or fumes (RR=2.4, 95% CI:1.1–5.0), and in particular among those with an above-median cumulative exposure to dust or fumes (RR=3.1, 95% CI:1.3–7.4). We observed suggestive associations with lead exposure for cancers of the kidney (RR=1.4, 95% CI:0.9–2.3) and brain (RR=1.8, 95% CI:0.7–4.8), and null findings for cancers of the lung and stomach.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Our findings provide additional evidence that occupational lead exposure increases risk of meningioma.</P>
