J-Sim: a simulation and emulation environment for wireless sensor networks

        Sobeih, A.,Hou, J.C.,Lu-Chuan Kung,Ning Li,Honghai Zhang,Wei-Peng Chen,Hung-Ying Tyan,Hyuk Lim IEEE 2006 IEEE wireless communications Vol.13 No.4

<P>Wireless sensor networks have gained considerable attention in the past few years. They have found application domains in battlefield communication, homeland security, pollution sensing, and traffic monitoring. As such, there has been an increasing need to define and develop simulation frameworks for carrying out high-fidelity WSN simulation. In this article we present a modeling, simulation, and emulation framework for WSNs in J-Sim - an open source, component-based compositional network simulation environment developed entirely in Java. This framework is built on the autonomous component architecture and extensible internetworking framework of J-Sim, and provides an object-oriented definition of target, sensor, and sink nodes, sensor and wireless communication channels, and physical media such as seismic channels, mobility models, and power models (both energy-producing and energy-consuming components). Application-specific models can be defined by subclassing classes in the simulation framework and customizing their behaviors. We also include in J-Sim a set of classes and mechanisms to realize network emulation. We demonstrate the use of the proposed WSN simulation framework by implementing several well-known localization, geographic routing, and directed diffusion protocols, and perform performance comparisons (in terms of the execution time incurred and memory used) in simulating WSN scenarios in J-Sim and ns-2. The simulation study indicates the WSN framework in J-Sim is much more scalable than ns-2 (especially in memory usage). We also demonstrate the use of the WSN framework in carrying out real-life full-fledged Future Combat System (FCS) simulation and emulation</P>

      • The human AQP4 gene : Definition of the locus encoding two water channel polypeptides in brain

        LU, MINGOI,LEE, M.DOUGLAS,SMITH, BARBARA L.,JUNG, JIN SUP,AGRE, PETER,VERDUK, MARIAN A.J.,MERKX, GERARD,RUSS, JOHAN P.L.,DEEN, PETER M.T. 부산대학교 유전공학연구소 1996 분자생물학 연구보 Vol.12 No.-

The aquaporin family of membrane water transport proteins are expressed in diverse tissues, and in brain the predominant water channel protein is AQP4. Here we report the isolation and characterization of the human AQP4 cDNAs and genomic DNA. Two cDNAs were isolated corresponding to the two initiating methionines (M1 in a 323-aa polypeptide and M23 in a 301-aa polypeptide) previously indentified in rat [Jung, J. S., Bhat, R. V., Preston, G. M., Guggino, W. B. & Agre, P. (1994) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 91, 13052-13056]. Similar to other aquaporins, the AQP4 gene is composed of four exons encoding 127, 55, 27, and 92 amino acids separated by introns of 0.8, 0.3, and 5.2 kb. Unlike other aquaporins, an alternative coding initiation sequence (designated exon 0) was located 2.7 kb upstream of exon 1. When spliced together, M1 and the subsequent 10 amino acids are encoded by exon 0; the next 11 amino acids and M23 are encoded by exon 1. Transcription initiation sites have been mapped in the proximal promoters of exons 0 and 1. RNase protection revealed distinct transcripts corresponding to M1 and M23 mRNAs, and AQP4 immunoblots of cerebellum demonstrated reactive polypeptides of 31 and 34 kDa. Using a P1 and a λEMBL subclone, the chromosomal site of the human AQP4 gene was mapped to chromosome 18 at the junction of q11.2 and q12.1 by fluorescence in situ hybridization. These studies may now permit molecular characterization of AQP4 during human development and in clinical disorders.

      • Constraints on kinematic models from the latest observational data

        Lu, J.,Xu, L.,Liu, M. North-Holland Pub. Co 2011 Physics letters: B Vol.699 No.4

Kinematical models are constrained by the latest observational data from geometry-distance measurements, which include 557 type Ia supernovae (SNIa) Union2 data and 15 observational Hubble data. Considering two parameterized deceleration parameter, the values of current deceleration parameter q0, jerk parameter j0 and transition redshift zT, are obtained. Furthermore, we show the departures for two parameterized kinematical models from ΛCDM model according to the evolutions of jerk parameter j(z). Also, it is shown that the constraint on jerk parameter j(z) is weak by the current geometrical observed data.

Delay Dependent Local Stabilization Conditions for Time-delay Nonlinear Discrete-time Systems Using Takagi-Sugeno Models

        Luís F. P. Silva,Valter J. S. Leite,Eugênio B. Castelan,Gang Feng 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2018 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.16 No.3

We propose convex conditions for stabilization of nonlinear discrete-time systems with time-varying delay in states through a fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) modeling. These conditions are developed from a fuzzy Lyapunov-Krasovskii function and they are formulated in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The results can be applied to a class of nonlinear systems that can be exactly represented by T-S fuzzy models inside a specific region called the region of validity. As a consequence, we need to provide an estimate of the set of safe initial conditions called the region of attraction such that the closed-loop trajectories starting in this set are assured to remain in the region of validity and to converge asymptotically to the origin. The estimate of the region of attraction is done with the aid of two sets: one dealing with the current state, and the other concerning the delayed states. Then, we can obtain the feedback fuzzy control law depending on the current state, xk, and the maximum delayed state vector, xk-d. It is shown that such a control law can locally stabilize the nonlinear discrete-time system at the origin. We also develop convex optimization procedures for the computation of the fuzzy control gains that maximize the estimates of the region of attraction. We present two examples to demonstrate the efficiency of the developed approach and to compare it with other approaches in the literature.

Reconstruction of genome-scale metabolic models of non-conventional yeasts: current state, challenges, and perspectives

Eduardo Luís Menezes de Almeida,Eduard J. Kerkhoven,Wendel Batista da Silveira 한국생물공학회 2024 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.29 No.1

Non-conventional yeasts are promising cell factories to produce lipids and oleochemicals, metabolites of industrial interest ( e.g ., organics acids, esters, and alcohols), and enzymes. They can also use diff erent agro-industrial by-products as substrates within the context of a circular economy. Some of these yeasts can also comprise economic and health burdens as pathogens. Genome-scale metabolic models (GEMs), networks reconstructed based on the genomic and metabolic information of one or more organisms, are great tools to understand metabolic functions and landscapes, as well as propose engineering targets to improve metabolite production or propose novel drug targets. Previous reviews on yeast GEMs have mainly focused on the history and the evaluation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae modeling paradigms or the accessibility and usability of yeast GEMs. However, they did not describe the reconstruction strategies, limitations, validations, challenges, and research gaps of non-conventional yeast GEMs. Herein, we focused on the reconstruction of available non- Saccharomyces GEMs, their validation, underscoring the physiological insights, as well as the identifi cation of both metabolic engineering and drug targets. We also discuss the challenges and knowledge gaps and propose strategies to boost their use and novel reconstructions.

      • Cyclic behaviour of end-plate beam-to-column composite joints

Rui Simões,Luís Simões da Silva,Paulo J.S. Cruz 국제구조공학회 2001 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.1 No.3

An experimental research program on end-plate beam-to-column composite joints under cyclic loading is presented. The major focus relates to the identification of the contribution of the concrete confinement in composite columns to the behaviour of the joint, on internal nodes and external nodes, together with an assessment of degradation of strength and stiffness in successive loading cycles. From the experimental results it was possible to identify the various failure modes and to fit the corresponding hysteretic curves to the Richard-Abbott and Mazzolani models. These curve-fitting exercises highlighted the need to adapt both models, either for improved ease of application, or to deal with some aspects previously not covered by those models.

Endovascular treatment of residual or recurrent intracranial aneurysms after surgical clipping

da Silva Júnior Nilton Rocha,Trivelato Felipe Padovani,Nakiri Guilherme Seizem,Rezende Marco Túlio Salles,de Castro-Afonso Luís Henrique,Abud Thiago Giansante,Vanzin José Ricardo,Manzato Luciano Bambi 대한뇌혈관외과학회 2021 Journal of Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neuros Vol.23 No.3

Objective Total aneurysm occlusion is crucial for the prevention of rebleeding of a ruptured aneurysm or to avoid rupture of an unruptured lesion. Both surgical and endovascular embolization fail to achieve complete aneurysm occlusion in all the cases. The objective of the study was to establish the safety and efficacy of endovascular treatment for previously clipped residual or recurrent aneurysms. Methods This was an observational, retrospective study of patients harboring incompletely occluded intracranial aneurysms after clipping who underwent endovascular treatment. Patients were treated using 4 different techniques: (1) simple coiling, (2) balloon remodeling, (3) stent-assisted coiling, and (4) flow diversion. Analyses were performed to identify predictors of total aneurysm occlusion, recanalization and complications. Results Between May 2010 and September 2018, 70 patients harboring incompletely occluded intracranial aneurysms after clipping met the inclusion criteria in 5 centers. The mean residual aneurysm size was 7.5 mm. Fifty-nine aneurysms were unruptured. Total aneurysm occlusion was achieved in 75.3% of the aneurysms after 1 year. All aneurysms treated with flow diversion revealed complete occlusion according to control angiography. Recanalization was observed in 14.5%. Permanent morbidity and mortality occurred in 2.9% and 1.4% of the patients, respectively. Conclusions Endovascular treatment of recurrent or residual aneurysms after surgical clipping was safe and efficacious. Flow diversion seems to be associated with better anatomical results. A more rigid study, a larger group of patients, and long-term follow-up are required to provide stronger conclusions about the best approach for residual clipped aneurysms.

Comparison of Outcomes in Immediate ImplantBased Breast Reconstruction: Acellular Dermal Matrix versus Inferior Dermal Flap

        Mata Ribeiro Luís,Meireles Rita P.,Brito Irís M.,Costa Patrícia M.,Rebelo Marco A.,Barbosa Rui F.,Choupina Miguel P.,Pinho Carlos J.,Ribeiro Matilde P. 대한성형외과학회 2022 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.49 No.2

Background Implant-based breast reconstruction has evolved tremendously in the last decades, mainly due to the development of new products and techniques that make the procedure safer and more reliable. The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes in immediate one-stage breast reconstruction between acellular dermal matrix (ADM) and inferior dermal flap (IDF).Methods We conducted a retrospective comparative study of patients submitted to immediate breast reconstructions with an anatomical implant and ADM or IDF in a single center between 2016 and 2018. Outcomes evaluated included major complications, early complications, reinterventions, readmissions, and reconstruction failure. Simple descriptive statistics and univariate analysis were performed. Results A total of 118 breast reconstructions (85 patients) were included in the analysis. Patients in the IDF group had a higher body mass index (median = 27.0) than patients in the ADM group (median = 24). There were no statistically significant differences among both groups regarding immediate major complication, early complications, readmissions, and reinterventions. Conclusion There are no significant differences in complications between the ADM and IDF approach to immediate implant breast reconstruction. In patients with higher body mass index and large, ptotic breasts, we recommend an immediate implant reconstruction with IDF.
