Flow fields in 2-blade and 4-blade half-ducted propeller fans for the outdoor units of air-conditioners were calculated with large eddy simulation based on finite element method with the aim of investigating the influence of blade number on aerodynamic noise. We confirmed that the tip vortex had a great influence on aerodynamic noise in half-ducted propeller fans. The length of the tip vortex trajectory and the blade pitch for the 2-blade propeller fan were longer than those for the 4-blade propeller fan. These were suppressed the interaction between the tip vortex and the adjacent blade in the 2-blade propeller fan.The 2-blade propeller fan was therefore more silent than the 4-blade propeller fan.

Objective: To investigate the clinical significance of systematic retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy during interval debulking surgery (IDS) in advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) patients. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 124 advanced EOC patients and analyzed the details of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT), IDS, postoperative treatment, and prognoses. Results: Following IDS, 98 patients had no gross residual disease (NGRD), 15 had residual disease sized <1 cm (optimal), and 11 had residual disease sized ≥1 cm (suboptimal). Two-year overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) rates were 88.8% and 39.8% in the NGRD group, 40.0% and 13.3% in the optimal group (p<0.001 vs. NGRD for both), and 36.3% and 0% in the suboptimal group, respectively. Five-year OS and 2-year PFS rates were 62% and 56.1% in the lymph node-negative (LN–) group and 26.2% and 24.5% in the lymph node-positive (LN+) group (p=0.0033 and p=0.0024 vs. LN–, respectively). Furthermore, survival in the LN+ group, despite surgical removal of positive nodes, was the same as that in the unknown LN status group, in which lymphadenectomy was not performed (p=0.616 and p=0.895, respectively). Multivariate analysis identified gross residual tumor during IDS (hazard ratio, 3.68; 95% confidence interval, 1.31 to 10.33 vs. NGRD) as the only independent predictor of poor OS. Conclusion: NGRD after IDS improved prognosis in advanced EOC patients treated with NACT-IDS. However, while systematic retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy during IDS may predict outcome, it does not confer therapeutic benefits.

In this study we calculated flow fields and aerodynamic noise in centrifugal fan of air conditioner by large eddy simulation (LES). The numerical simulation code employed throughout the LES was FrontFlow/blue (FFB). We compared calculation results for 10 million grids (10M-grid), 60 million grids (60M-grid) and 500 million grids (500M-grid) to investigate the influence of grid resolution on the prediction accuracy. The prediction accuracy of the aerodynamic noise by the 500M-grid was improved compared to the 10M-grid and 60M-grid calculation results. The grid resolutions between the shroud and the bell mouth and between one blade and an adjacent blade were important. Moreover, we found the proper capturing of the streaks contributed to better prediction.

The final purpose of this study is to design a control system to assist in the skill of riding a unicycle. To realize such a system, it is necessary to make a mathematical model and to analyze the dynamics of the unicycle. It is ideal that the dynamics of a unicycle is kept as original as possible even if any automatic support control is required to assist the operator. Thus, this paper presents modeling of the unicycle and a control system design by the controlled Lagrangian to realize this type of controller.
