On the QoS Behavior of Self-Similar Traffic in a Converged ONU-BS Under Custom Queueing

Obele, Brownson Obaridoa,Iftikhar, Mohsin,Kang, Min-Ho The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2011 Journal of communications and networks Vol.13 No.3

A novel converged optical network unit (ONU)-base station (BS) architecture has been contemplated for next-generation optical-wireless networks. It has been demonstrated through high quality studies that data traffic carried by both wired and wireless networks exhibit self-similar and long range dependent characteristics; attributes that classical teletraffic theory based on simplistic Poisson models fail to capture. Therefore, in order to apprehend the proposed converged architecture and to reinforce the provisioning of tightly bound quality of service (QoS) parameters to end-users, we substantiate the analysis of the QoS behavior of the ONU-BS under self-similar and long range dependent traffic conditions using custom queuing which is a common queuing discipline. This paper extends our previous work on priority queuing and brings novelty in terms of presenting performance analysis of the converged ONU-BS under realistic traffic load conditions. Further, the presented analysis can be used as a network planning and optimization tool to select the most robust and appropriate queuing discipline for the ONU-BS relevant to the QoS requirements of different applications.

Exploiting W. Ellison model for seawater communication at gigahertz frequencies based on world ocean atlas data

        Tahir, Muhammad,Ali, Iftikhar,Yan, Piao,Jafri, Mohsin Raza,Jiang, Zexin,Di, Xiaoqiang Electronics and Telecommunications Research Instit 2020 ETRI Journal Vol.42 No.4

Electromagnetic (EM) waves used to send signals under seawater are normally restricted to low frequencies (f) because of sudden exponential increases of attenuation (𝛼) at higher f. The mathematics of EM wave propagation in seawater demonstrate dependence on relative permeability (𝜇r), relative permittivity (𝜀r), conductivity (𝜎), and f of transmission. Estimation of 𝜀r and 𝜎 based on the W. Ellison interpolation model was performed for averaged real-time data of temperature (T) and salinity (S) from 1955 to 2012 for all oceans with 41 088 latitude/longitude points and 101 depth points up to 5500 m. Estimation of parameters such as real and imaginary parts of 𝜀r, 𝜀r', 𝜀r", 𝜎, loss tangent (tan 𝛿), propagation velocity (Vp), phase constant (𝛽), and α contributes to absorption loss (La) for seawater channels carried out by using normal distribution fit in the 3 GHz-40 GHz f range. We also estimated total path loss (LPL) in seawater for given transmission power Pt and antenna (dipole) gain. MATLAB is the simulation tool used for analysis.

      • Simvastatin-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles for enhanced anti-hyperlipidemic activity in hyperlipidemia animal model

        Rizvi, Syed Zaki Husain,Shah, Fawad Ali,Khan, Namrah,Muhammad, Iftikhar,Ali, Khan Hashim,Ansari, Muhammad Mohsin,Din, Fakhar ud,Qureshi, Omer Salman,Kim, Kyoung-Won,Choe, Yeong-Hwan,Kim, Jin-Ki,Zeb, A Elsevier 2019 International journal of pharmaceutics Vol.560 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The objective of current study was to develop solid lipid nanoparticles-loaded with simvastatin (SIM-SLNs) and investigate their <I>in vivo</I> anti-hyperlipidemic activity in poloxamer-induced hyperlipidemia model. Nano-template engineering technique was used to prepare SIM-SLNs with palmityl alcohol as lipid core and a mixture of Tween 40/Span 40/Myrj 52 to stabilize the core. The prepared SIM-SLNs were evaluated for physicochemical parameters including particle diameter, surface charge, morphology, incorporation efficiency, thermal behaviour and crystallinity. <I>In vitro</I> release profile of SIM-SLNs in simulated gastric and intestinal fluids was evaluated by using dialysis bag technique and anti-hyperlipidemic activity was assessed in hyperlipidemia rat model. SIM-SLNs revealed uniform particle size with spherical morphology, zeta potential of −24.9 mV and high incorporation efficiency (∼85%). Thermal behaviour and crystallinity studies demonstrated successful incorporation of SIM in the lipid core and its conversion to amorphous form. SIM-SLNs demonstrated a sustained SIM release from the lipid core of nanoparticles. SIM-SLNs significantly reduced the elevated serum lipids as indicated by ∼3.9 and ∼1.5-times decreased total cholesterol compared to those of untreated control and SIM dispersion treated hyperlipidemic rats. In conclusion, SIM-SLNs showed a great promise for improving the therapeutic outcomes of SIM via its effective oral delivery.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
