<▼1><P>A new method of time-resolved solution scattering utilizing X-ray multilayer optics is presented.</P></▼1><▼2><P>100 ps time-resolved X-ray solution-scattering capabilities have been developed using multilayer optics at the beamline NW14A, Photon Factory Advanced Ring, KEK. X-ray pulses with an energy bandwidth of Δ<I>E</I>/<I>E</I> = 1–5% are generated by reflecting X-ray pulses (Δ<I>E</I>/<I>E</I> = 15%) through multilayer optics, made of W/B<SUB>4</SUB>C or depth-graded Ru/C on silicon substrate. This tailor-made wide-bandwidth X-ray pulse provides high-quality solution-scattering data for obtaining photo-induced molecular reaction dynamics. The time-resolved solution scattering of CH<SUB>2</SUB>I<SUB>2</SUB> in methanol is demonstrated as a typical example.</P></▼2>

Ammonia has received significant attention as a fuel due to its carbon-free molecular structure. However, burning ammonia is challenging because of its low laminar burning velocity. To promote the combustion velocity, the authors propose a constant volume combustion chamber with a sub-chamber. This study investigated the effects of the mixing time and equivalence ratio of the ammonia/oxygen/argon mixture on combustion. The mean velocity of the ejection from the sub-chamber can be calculated by evaluating the combustion pressure, mass fraction burned, and volume fraction burned. It was clarified that with the sub-chamber structure, the ejection from the sub-chamber improved the compression and turbulence of unburned gas in the main chamber and increased the mean flame velocity of ammonia combustion. The appropriate glow plug temperature could improve the ignitability of the fuel mixture, leading to increased combustion efficiency, maximum combustion pressure, and reduced combustion time.

Improving thermal efficiency of internal combustion engines has been a priority in the automotive industry. It is necessary to model the heat transfer phenomenon at the intake system and precisely predict intake air’s mass flow rate into the engine cylinder. In the previous studies, the heat transfer at the intake system was modeled as quasi-steady state phenomenon, based on Colburn analogy. Authors developed two empirical equations with the introduction of Graetz and Strouhal numbers. In the present study, further improvements were done by the addition of pressure ratio between the intake manifold and atmospheric pressure, along with Reynolds number in order to characterize the backflow gas effect on intake air temperature. Compared with the experimental results, maximum and average errors of intake air temperature estimations inside the manifold found to be 2.9 % and 0.9 %, respectively.

Pyrolyzed polyimide is explored in terms of MEMS material. This paper describes chemical, electrical, mechanical properties of pyrolyzed polyimide (PIX-1400) thin film as MEMS material. When polyimide thin film was pyrolyzed at $800^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes in $N_{2}$ ambient, the residual ratio of pyrolyzed film thickness measured with a surface profiler is about 49 %, and the resistivity is about $2.17{\times}10^{-2}\;{Omega}cm$. From the result of the load-deflection test, the estimated Young's modulus and initial average stress of pyrolyzed polyimide are 67 GPa and 30 MPa, respectively. As one demonstration of MEMS structures of pyrolyzed polyimide, the fabrication method of the microbridge structure is proposed for a micro heater and a resonator.

Non-toxic stimulation of dendritic cells (DCs), which are central immunomodulators, may aid the prevention of cancer. Furthermore, induction of apoptosis in cancer cells by anticancer agents contributes to the induction of DC maturation. We previously reported that extracts from $Pinus$ $parviflora$ Sieb. et Zucc pine cone and $Mucuna$ seed induce differentiation of mouse bone marrow cells into mature dendritic cells and also induce apoptosis in various human cancer cell lines. In the present study, we screened 31 kinds of edible beans with biological activity similar to that of extracts from pine cone and $Mucuna$ and found that the heat-stable extract from azuki bean ($Vigna$ $angula$) stimulated differentiation of bone marrow cells into immature DCs with the greatest efficacy. The level of IL-6 produced by sequential treatment of DCs with azuki extract and lipopolysaccharide was the highest among the examined beans. Azuki extract also inhibited the growth of human leukemia U937 cells, leading to induction of apoptosis. These results suggest that azuki bean and its extract are immunopotentiating foods that can be used as a dietary supplement for cancer prevention and immunotherapy.
Power Supply System of DC/AC Micro Grid System

This paper proposes an AC/DC power supply system with DGs using the parallel processing method. The purpose of this system is to supply the power without connecting to the utility gird. The DGs consist of photovoltaic (PV), -and wind generators (WG), and the main energy source of this system is the DGs and the UPS battery. When the system does not get enough energy from the DGs, and the power supply of the battery runs out, this system connects to the utility grid and begins to charge the battery and supply to the load. In this study, we focused on the AC power supply and DC power supply from DGs. Then, the converters of DGs use two types, DC/AC type and DC/DC type. The power supply system has been operated with the actual loads of 20 ㎾ in the campus of the Aichi Institute of Technology. This paper reports on our study of DC and AC power supplies in the event of a system anomaly.
Recognition and degradation of insoluble crystalline cellulose by Polyporus arcularius

The genes encoding cellulases, which belong to glycosyl hydrolase families have been cloned from the basidiomycetous mushrooms. The transcripts of cellulase genes are strongly induced when the mycelia are grown in medium containing crystalline cellulose, and they are not expressed in medium containing glucose, but how insoluble substrates such as microcrystalline cellulose are recognized by these fungal cells is not clear. The polypore mushroom Polyporus arcularius is a wood-decomposing basidiomycete that produces at least three types (I, II, and IIIa) of carboxymethyl cellulase (CMCase) when the medium contains crystalline cellulose as the sole carbon source and produced mainly cellobiose in the medium. The genomic and cDNA clones encoding the family 12 endoglucanase (CMCase IIIa) gene (cel3A) of P. arcularius have been sequenced, and Cel3A has been expressed as an active enzyme in Escherichia coli. To determine the role and function of each type of cellulase in the degradation of crystalline cellulose by basidiomycetous mushrooms, the structure of all of the cellulase genes should be investigated, but the nucleotide sequences of the other cellulase genes in P. arcularius have not yet been reported. In the current study, the genomic and cDNA clones encoding the endoglucanases (cel4), and the two cellobiohydrolases (cel1 and cel2) of P. arcularius sequenced and characterized. The predicted amino acid sequence of Cel1 Cel2, Cel3a and Cel4 are similar to glycosyl hydrolase family 7, 6 12 and 5 protein, respectively. The expressions of the all cellulase genes (cel1 cel2, cel3a and cel4) were induced by Avicel (microcrystalline cellulose) and cellopentaose but repressed by glucose, cellobiose, cellotriose, and cellotetraose. There was a low level of transcription of both genes regardless of the carbon source. These results suggest that P. arcularius cells constitutively express a very low level of cellulase that can degrade insoluble crystalline cellulose and that the transcription of celluases in the cells is induced by products produced by these endoglucanases such as cellooligosaccharides. From our findings, we propose a possible mechanism for the recognition and degradation of insoluble crystalline cellulose by fungal cells.
