We analyzed data accumulated during 2005 and 2006 by the Taiwan-American Occultation Survey (TAOS) in order to detect short-period variable stars (periods of 1 hr) such as δ Scuti. TAOS is designed for the detection of stellar occultation by small-size Kuiper Belt Objects and is operating four 50 cm telescopes at an effective cadence of 5 Hz. The four telescopes simultaneously monitor the same patch of the sky in order to reduce false positives. To detect short-period variables, we used the fast Fourier transform algorithm (FFT) in as much as the data points in TAOS light curves are evenly spaced. Using FFT, we found 41 short-period variables with amplitudes smaller than a few hundredths of a magnitude and periods of about an hour, which suggest that they are low-amplitude δ Scuti stars. The light curves of TAOS δ Scuti stars are accessible online at the Time Series Center Web site (http://timemachine.iic.harvard.edu).

The use of technology within the home has gained wide spread acceptance as one possible approach to be used in addressing the challenges of an ageing society. A number of rudimentary assistive solutions are now being deployed in real settings but with the introduction of these technology-orientated services come a number of challenges, which to date are still largely unsolved. At a fundamental level, the management and processing of the large quantities of data generated from multiple sensors is recognised as one of the most significant challenges. This paper aims to present an overview of the types of sensor technologies used within Ambient Assisted Living. Subsequently, through presentation of a series of case studies, the paper will demonstrate how the practical integration of multiple sources of sensor data can be used to improve the overall concept and applications of Ambient Assisted Living.

Gesture semantic recognition is a vital process of motion recognition. An accurate and stable recognition method helps to identify semantic meaning of a continuous motion. In this work, the semantic meaning is represented by a sequence of motion primitives. This work proposes a method based on spatial and temporal reasoning. Both spatial and temporal rules of motion primitives are used to estimate the current state of motion. The motion primitives adopted in this work are transport empty (TE), transport loaded (TL), grasp (G), and release (RL) from Gilbreth’s therbligs. The results show that the average recognition rate is 94.44% out of three different tasks.

In this paper, an improved KY converter is presented, which is constructed mainly by one charge pump capacitor and one central-tapped coupling inductor. Besides, a passive clamping snubber is added to this converter to improve the efficiency above half load. As compared to the KY converter, the voltage conversion ratio of the proposed converter is upgraded significantly. In this paper, the basic operating principles and mathematical deductions of the proposed converter are described, along with some experimental results provided to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed converter.
