Clinically, proximal bone resorption in the femur is frequently seen postoperatively on the follow up XI-rays after total hip replacement (THR). We developed the finite element model of cementless THR. The model is two dimensional side plate model, whereby the three dimensional structural integrity of the bone can be accounted for by a separate two dimensional mesh, a side plate. The subject of this article is the development and application of this two dimensional side plate FEM to study the reverse effect of the various degree of bone resorption of femur after THR. The results of this study indicates that 1) two dimensional side plate model is good and simple alternative to complex three dimensional model and 2) the severity of the proximal bone resorption has the effect of more increasing stress on the cortex at the level of femoral stem tip.

The purpose of this study is to develop an optimal performance design of a concrete median barrier using the design of experiment and crash simulation which is done by Pam-Crash, one of the commercial crash simulation software. A formula of characteristic value was suggested to obtain an optimal performance design considering all of von Mises stress, volume and acceleration at center of gravity of a heavy truck. An optimal design of a concrete median barrier was obtained by the analysis of variance based on design of experiment and crash simulation. A crash simulation with the optimal design was accomplished in order to verify the suitability of the suggested formula and the proper application of the design of experiment. The obtained optimal design was satisfied for a domestic design regulation of a concrete median barrier.

Human muscles are generally responded to abrupt force during a vehicle crash, which affects the human body motion significantly during the crash. However, it is very difficult to realize the response of living muscle to the crash dummy, therefore it is ignored in most cases and there are only few reports about on effects of the response of living muscle. In this paper, a new muscle activation system using the electromagnetic actuator and linear springs was developed for the response of living muscle in a crash dummy and the quasi-static characteristics of the Hill-type muscle model was realized with the proposed muscle activation system experimentally. First, the muscle activation system was designed for a typical longissimus capitis muscle, and then a control system was developed to produce the quasi-static force-length characteristics of the muscle. Then, the muscle elongation system was built using a linear motion table which is driven by a ball screw and a servo motor and the muscle elongation test was performed. The test results showed that the proposed muscle activation system generated the quasi-static force-length characteristics of the Hill-type muscle model very accurately. Hereafter, if the performance of proposed muscle activation system is improved considering the dynamic characteristics of the muscle activation system using the frequency response function, then the proposed muscle activation system can be applied to the crash dummy, and it is expected to imitate the human body motion during the crash procedure.

Fracture of the talus is infrequent injury when they occur, gut, the complications of the displaced fractures are frequent and resulting disabilities are severe that the importance of proper management is emphasized. Authors reviewed l8 cases of talus fracture(Hawkin's classification type III and N) treated at Department of orthopaedic surgery, Capital Armed force Gerneral Hospital from 199I to 1994 to evaluate the result. The results were as follows; 1. Most common cause was fall down 2. Associated injuries were fracture of the medial malleolus, caicaneus and Bursting fracture of spine. 3. The methods of treatment were open reduction and screw fixation in all cases. 4. Classification by Hawkins were Type K in 12 cases and Type F in 6 cases. 5. Final clinical result by Hawkin's criteria were good in 6 cases, fair in 7 cases and poor in 5 cases. 6. Complications were avascular necrosis in 7 cases, degenerative arthritis in 5 and nonunion in 3.
