Students' perceptions of parental bonding styles and their academic burnout

This study investigated how parental bonding style affects academic burnout in Korean adolescents. Participants were 447 middle school students, who completed the Parental Bonding Instrument and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey. MANCOVA results confirmed that adolescents reporting the optimal bonding parental style, for both mother and father, have lower scores on three subscales of academic burnout (Exhaustion, Cynicism, and Inefficacy) than do their counterparts who report the affectionless control parental style. We discuss the possible implications for reducing students' academic burnout rates.

Purpose: The efficacy of the Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) for Healthcare Communities program has not been verified. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of the online MSC for Healthcare Communities program on burnout, stress-related health, and resilience among surgical trainees. Methods: A single-arm pilot study was conducted at a tertiary referral academic hospital in Korea. Surgical trainees were recruited through flyer postings; therefore, a volunteer sample was used. Thus, 15 participants participated, among whom 9 were women and 11 were doctor-residents. The Self-Compassion for Healthcare Communities (SCHC) program was conducted from September to October 2021 via weekly online meetings (1 hour) for 6 weeks. The efficacy of the program was evaluated using validated scales for burnout, stress, anxiety, depression, self-compassion, and resilience before and after the intervention and 1 month later. Results: The results showed significantly reduced burnout, anxiety, and stress scores. After the program, high emotional exhaustion and depersonalization rates decreased, and personal accomplishment increased. Eight participants showed reduced anxiety postintervention, and 9 showed reduced stress. Improvements were observed between pre- and postintervention in resilience, life satisfaction, and common humanity. Changes in self-compassion predicted higher gains in resilience and greater reductions in burnout and stress. Conclusion: The SCHC is a feasible and effective program to improve resilience, self-compassion, and life satisfaction and reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout in surgical trainees. This study highlights the need to include specific mental health programs in surgical training to improve trainees’ well-being.
The Relationship between Interactive Constraints and Self-Construals

The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceived importance of interactive constraints and the degree of independent and interdependent self-construals; and then analyze the relationship between these two elements. It hypothesizes that independent and interdependent self-construals can have an influence on the individual’s linguistic behavior. It was based upon data analysis taken from a survey of 269 undergraduate students of Keimyung University, aged from 20 to 23. The survey was comprised of two bind situations and a self-construal test. The situations included questions for the perceived importance of interactive constraints, referring to Kim and William(1994:128). The degree of independent and interdependent self-construals was measured using a revised version of Theodore(1994:585)’s Self-Construal Scale. The results showed that independent self-construal was positively correlated with concern for clarity, whereas interdependent self-construal was positively correlated with concerns for the hearer’s feeling and avoiding negative evaluation. This, in turn, led to a greater likelihood of the causality occurring between the two elements.
Cultural validation of the Maslach Burnout Inventory for Korean students

The purpose of this study was to examine the factorial validity of the MBI-SS in Korean students. Specifically, we investigated whether the original three-factor structure of the MBI-SS was appropriate for use with Korean students. In addition, by running multi-group structural equation model analyses with factorial invariance tests simultaneously for both genders (i.e., males and females) and academic settings (i.e., middle school and high school), we tested whether the factor loading and correlations between factors can be similarly interpreted across the different groups. Results indicated that the MBI-SS is a valid instrument to measure academic burnout of Korean students. Furthermore, results presented the possibility that the MBI-SS could be used regardless of cultural background. Implications for future research and practice and limitations are discussed.

Speakers of different languages have different language-use conventions. But pragmatic variation occurs not only across languages, but also across cultures of a same language and each culture has linguistic norms its native speakers tacitly follow. The present paper analyzes pragmatic variation between American and British English described in Douglas Kennedy's A Special Relationship. It can be argued that novels are not subject to linguistic analysis, but a story of an American lady who marries a British man and lives in London, contains a lot of struggles caused by different communication behaviors of two cultures. Based on Politeness Theory, I explain what causes one to feel the opponent impolite and have negative image against her/him in a cross-cultural conversation. I attempt to explain the underlying difference of cultural values and priorities of the two countries based on Face Theory. I claim that Americans and the British have slightly different value toward Face and it is reflected in different politeness strategies and communication behavior.
누에 short neuropeptide F receptor (BsNPF-R)의 cDNA cloning

누에(Bombyx mori)에서 short neuropeptide F (sNPF) receptor를 encoding하고 있는 cDNA를 cloning하여서 BsNPF-R라고 이름을 붙였다. BsNPF-R는 이미 보고된 sNPF-R들과 아미노산 수준에서 사람(36%), 쥐(34%), 제브라피쉬(35%), 초파리(51%)와 상동성을 보였다. BsNPF-R는 계산적으로 분자량이 42,731 Da이고 원형질막을 관통하는 단백질이다. BsNPF-R 유전자발현은 중장, 후견사선, 말피기관, 정소에서 강한 반면 지방체, 혈세포, 난소에서 약하게 발현하였다. 그리고 합성된 sNPF에 의해서도 BsNPF-R의 유전자발현이 조절되었다. It has already been reported that short neuropeptide F (sNPF) stimulates feeding behaviors in a wide variety of insect species. In the present study, we cloned cDNA, encoding a sNPF receptor homologue from a silkworm, Bombyx mori, named BsNPF-R. The amino acid sequence of BsNPF-R was compared with those of sNPF-R thus far reported, which is shared with humans (36%), mice (34%), zebrafish (35%), and fruit flies (51%), respectively. A BsNPF-R protein"s mass was theoretically estimated to be 42,731 Da and it is a putative plasma membrane-penetrating protein. The mRNA expression of BsNPF-R was tested; the results showed that a strong expression was detected at the midgut, post-silk gland, Malpighian, and testis; however, a weak expression was at the fat body, hemocyte, and ovary. In addition, the synthesized sNPF of a silkworm regulated the BsNPF-R mRNA expression through the cell-based functional analysis.

The present study describes socio-pragmatic patterns of Korean address forms. It investigates whether KFL textbooks represent these patterns, and explores the potential of learners' inadequacy in the case of textbooks failing to represent the patterns. To describe authentic pragmatic patterns, this study analyzes Korean TV dramas and a Korean movie. To see the authenticity of textbooks, eleven KFL textbooks published by three different universities have been used. In addition, interviews and surveys have been conducted to reveal learners' inadequacy. The result is that the textbooks fail to represent the authenticity of address forms found in real conversations. They often over-emphasize the form of 'ssi following a person's name, which has limited use in real situations. Both interviews and surveys, however, show that learners use relatively various and adequate address forms in spite of the simplicity and overuse of 'ssi' in the textbooks. This is probably the result of regular interactions with native speakers. The conclusion is that the simplicity of the textbooks has less effect on learner's socio-pragmatic competence than hypothesized and is no serious obstacle. This study still suggests, however, that textbooks should contain enough authentic data to help foreign students, especially those for whom textbooks are the only tool. This will help teachers make better teaching strategies.
