Objectives: Few attempts have been made to develop a generic health-related quality of life (HRQoL) instrument and to examine its validity and reliability in Korea. We aimed to do this in our present study. Methods: After a literature review of existing generic HRQoL instruments, a focus group discussion, in-depth interviews, and expert consultations, we selected 30 tentative items for a new HRQoL measure. These items were evaluated by assessing their ceiling effects, difficulty, and redundancy in the first survey. To validate the HRQoL instrument that was developed, known-groups validity and convergent/discriminant validity were evaluated and its test-retest reliability was examined in the second survey. Results: Of the 30 items originally assessed for the HRQoL instrument, four were excluded due to high ceiling effects and six were removed due to redundancy. We ultimately developed a HRQoL instrument with a reduced number of 20 items, known as the Health-related Quality of Life Instrument with 20 items (HINT-20), incorporating physical, mental, social, and positive health dimensions. The results of the HINT-20 for known-groups validity were poorer in women, the elderly, and those with a low income. For convergent/discriminant validity, the correlation coefficients of items (except vitality) in the physical health dimension with the physical component summary of the Short Form 36 version 2 (SF-36v2) were generally higher than the correlations of those items with the mental component summary of the SF-36v2, and vice versa. Regarding test-retest reliability, the intraclass correlation coefficient of the total HINT-20 score was 0.813 (p<0.001). Conclusions: A novel generic HRQoL instrument, the HINT-20, was developed for the Korean general population and showed acceptable validity and reliability.

<P>A dynamic process in the synthesis of silica nanotubes (SNTs) by utilizing glycyldodecylamide (GDA) as a soft template was thoroughly investigated. The morphological evolution from GDA to SNTs was deeply explored to elucidate the formation mechanism for optimizing the synthesis procedure. Various analytical tools, namely, XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, Z-potential, and N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, were employed during the synthesis procedure. The interactive structure of GDA was also investigated using TEM-EDX as a function of aging time. These studies revealed the stepwise morphology of nanograin, nanofiber, curved plate, and nanotube in the ethanol/water solution when aged at room temperature. The supramolecular GDA molded the vesicle type nanostructure which was surrounded by silica and facilitated the formation of uniform SNTs. The stimulus for GDA to be curved into a vesicle was the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between adjacent amide groups of the template molecules. This was illustrated by FTIR spectra of GDA-silica intermediate by detecting the transition of amide I peak from 1678 to 1635 cm–1. The effect of hydrogen bonding became stronger when the sample was aged.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/langd5/2017/langd5.2017.33.issue-40/acs.langmuir.7b02881/production/images/medium/la-2017-02881p_0012.gif'></P>

<P>The resistive switching characteristics of polyfluorene-derivative polymer material in a sub-micron scale via-hole device structure were investigated. The scalable via-hole sub-microstructure was fabricated using an e-beam lithographic technique. The polymer non-volatile memory devices varied in size from 40 × 40 µm2 to 200 × 200 nm2. From the scaling of junction size, the memory mechanism can be attributed to the space–charge-limited current with filamentary conduction. Sub-micron scale polymer memory devices showed excellent resistive switching behaviours such as a large ON/OFF ratio (<I>I</I>ON/<I>I</I>OFF∼104), excellent device-to-device switching uniformity, good sweep endurance, and good retention times (more than 10 000 s). The successful operation of sub-micron scale memory devices of our polyfluorene-derivative polymer shows promise to fabricate high-density polymer memory devices. </P>

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>Acupuncture treatment frequently evokes both pain and fear, causing patients to be hesitant about undergoing the procedure. This study investigated individual differences in autonomic response to acupuncture stimulation and its relationship to fear of the procedure.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Twenty-seven participants filled out the acupuncture fear scale (AFS) questionnaire and underwent acupuncture stimulation at the LI4 acupuncture point. Autonomic responses were measured by recording the skin conductance response (SCR) throughout acupuncture stimulation. Pearson correlation analysis was performed between the self-reported AFS scores and changes in SCR.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>After acupuncture stimulation, SCR significantly increased and there were greater individual differences in enhanced sympathetic activations to acupuncture stimulation. Changes in SCR correlated with scores for the painful sensation domain of the AFS.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Our results indicate that fear of acupuncture-induced pain is associated with physiological arousal when people receive acupuncture stimulation. Fear of pain is the dominant factor in acupuncture-related fear and it should be considered in practice and in research.</P>

Objective: Surgical management of ovarian cancer includes total hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and peritoneal lymph node sampling which results in the loss of fertility. Fertility-sparing surgery in the reproductive aged women with early stage ovarian cancer with favorable histology has been proposed by American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and European Society for Medical Oncology. We sought to access the survival and fertility outcome of Korean women in their reproductive age who undertook fertility-sparing surgery. Methods: Based on the Korean National Insurance Claims Data and the National Health Information Database, 328 women with newly developed ovarian cancer in 2010 were followed up for the survival and pregnancy outcome until 2020. Patients who were diagnosed with cancer or underwent hysterectomy before 2010 were excluded. The control group consisted of 552 women matched by age, economic status and place of living. Results: Out of 120, 10 deaths occurred in the fertility-sparing surgery group showing a survival rate of 91.7%. Women undertaking fertility-sparing surgery had a lower chance of delivering a newborn compared to the control group (OR 0.46; 95% CI 0.26-0.81). Diagnosis of infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and abortion appeared higher in the fertility-sparing surgery group, but it did not reach a statistical significance. Conclusion: The pregnancy rate of the ovarian cancer patients with fertility-sparing surgery was lower than that of women without ovarian cancer. Undergoing fertility-sparing surgery per se should not deter women of trying to get pregnant as the pregnancy outcome indicators do not show statistically significant differences compared to the control group.

The sensory properties and flavor of sour cream are important factors that influence consumer acceptability. The present study aimed to isolate lactic acid bacteria with excellent diacetyl production ability and to optimize the fermentation conditions for sour cream manufacture. Lactococcus lactis ssp. cremoris was isolated as a lactic acid bacterium derived from raw milk. This strain showed the greatest diacetyl production among other strains and was named LRCC5306. Various culture conditions were optimized to improve the diacetyl production of LRCC5306. The highest diacetyl production was found to be at 105.04±2.06 mg/L, when 0.2% citric acid and 0.001% Fe2+ were added and cultured at 20℃ for 15 h. Based on the optimal cultivation conditions, sour cream was manufactured using LRCC5306, with a viable count of 1.04×108 CFU/g and a diacetyl concentration of 106.56±1.53 mg/g. The electronic tongue system was used to compare the sensory properties of the sour cream; the fermented product exhibited sweetness and saltiness which was similar to that of an imported commercial product, but with slightly reduced bitterness and a significantly greater degree of sour taste. Therefore, our study shows that if cream is fermented using the LRCC5306, it is possible to produce sour cream with greatly improved sensory attractiveness, resulting in increased acceptance by consumers. Since this sour cream has a higher viable count of lactic acid bacteria, it is also anticipated that it will have a better probiotic effect.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the cholesterol-assimilation ability of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), which were isolated from kimchi, a Korean traditional fermented cabbage. The isolated strain, using modified MRS medium, showed 30.5% cholesterol assimilation activity and was named Pediococcus acidilactici LRCC5307. Types and concentrations of bile were investigated for their effects on increasing the cholesterol assimilation ability of the LRCC5307 strain, a 74.5% decrease in cholesterol was observed when 0.2% bile salts were added. In addition, the manufacture of low-cholesterol butter using LRCC5307 was examined. After fermentation, LRCC5307 with butter showed 8.74 Log CFU/g viable cells, pH 5.43, and a 11% decrease in cholesterol. These results suggest that LRCC5307 could help in the production of healthier butter by decreasing cholesterol and including living LAB.
