        Constructivist Research in Smart Tourism

        Smart tourism is a social phenomenon arising from the convergence of information technology with the tourism experience. New ways of doing business, new patterns of experience and new problems concerning tourism destination image management and marketing are emerging due to the ubiquitous presence and influence of the internet and mobile devices. New conceptual tools are also available to enable researchers to further understand the social implications as well as the practical implementation of these new virtual and augmented smart tourism ecosystems. To this effect this paper introduces the constructivist paradigm and associated research methodologies as another toolbox for interpreting how smart tourism works as a form of soft power. The implications revealed by constructivism are that through smart tourism ecosystems, destination commodification and commoditization, experience and image formation are increasingly self-perpetuating, autonomous and organic social constructions. Researchers in information technology can use constructivist research to further explore these dynamic developments in smart tourism.

        Surface nuclear magnetic resonance signal contribution in conductive terrains

        To correctly invert and interpret Surface Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (SNMR) data collected in conductive terrains, an accurate estimate of subsurface conductivity structure is required. Given such an estimate, it would be useful to determine, before conducting an SNMR sounding, whether or not the conductivity structure would prevent groundwater being detected. Using SNMR forward modelling, we describe a method of determining the depth range from which most of the SNMR signal originates, given a model of subsurface conductivity structure. We use the method to estimate SNMR depth penetration in a range of halfspace models and show that for conductive halfspaces ($<10{\Omega}.m$) the depth of penetration Is less than 50 m. It is also shown that for these halfspaces, increasing coincident loop size does not significantly improve depth penetration. The results can be used with halfspace approximations of more complicated ID conductivity structures to give a reasonable estimate of the depth range over which signal is obtainable in conductive terrains.

      • Stability of Albuterol in Continuous Nebulization

        Due to the emergent nature of situations requiring continuous nebulization of albuterol, a premixed albuterol solution would provide faster access to the therapy when required. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stability of albuterol solutions at a concentration (200㎍/mL) used in continuous nebulization when stored in various containers of polyvinyl chloride bags, polyolefin bags, polypropylene syringes and tubes and borosilicate glass tubes. Solutions were prepared in triplicate in 0.9% sodium chloride stored under refrigerated and room temperatures for seven days. Samples were removed and analyzed using a stability-indicating high-performance Liquid chromatography assay method. Albuterol was found to be stable (>90% of the initial concentration remaining) for at least seven days in all five types of containers under the conditions tested.

      • The Development of Suburban Housing in Perth, Western Australia

        In this paper, the development of suburban housing in Perth, Western Australia is analysed from material derived from the 1911 to 1986 censuses. As such, instead of taking an overall view of the changes that have been divided into four growth groups which reflect the main periods of housing establishment. From an analysis of this data, it is suggested that not only have the various areas passed through a series of growth phases. but also that these are reflected in the characteristics of the dwellings. Furthermore, throughout the century, there has been a pronounced shift in the nature of houses which in turn reflect changes in the role of dwellings for the inhabitants.

        The effectiveness of a pre-procedural mouthrinse in reducing bacteria on radiographic phosphor plates

        Purpose: This study assessed the effectiveness of three antimicrobial mouthrinses in reducing microbial growth on photostimulable phosphor (PSP) plates. Materials and Methods: Prior to performing a full-mouth radiographic survey (FMX), subjects were asked to rinse with one of the three test rinses ($Listerine^{(R)}$, $Decapinol^{(R)}$, or chlorhexidine oral rinse 0.12%) or to refrain from rinsing. Four PSP plates were sampled from each FMX through collection into sterile containers upon exiting the scanner. Flame-sterilized forceps were used to transfer the PSP plates onto blood agar plates (5% sheep blood agar). The blood agar plates were incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ for up to 72 h. An environmental control blood agar plate was incubated with each batch. Additionally, for control, 25 gas-sterilized PSP plates were plated onto blood agar and analyzed. Results: The mean number of bacterial colonies per plate was the lowest in the chlorhexidine group, followed by the Decapinol, Listerine, and the no rinse negative control groups. Only the chlorhexidine and Listerine groups were significantly different (p=0.005). No growth was observed for the 25 gas-sterilized control plates or the environmental control blood agar plates. Conclusion: The mean number of bacterial colonies was the lowest in the chlorhexidine group, followed by the Decapinol, Listerine, and the no rinse groups. Nonetheless, a statistically significant difference was found only in the case of Listerine. Additional research is needed to test whether a higher concentration (0.2%) or longer exposure period (two consecutive 30 s rinse periods) would be helpful in reducing PSP plate contamination further with chlorhexidine.

      • Cultural Representations and Experience in Tourism: Two Forms of Mimesis

        This paper fills a gap in smart tourism research by investigating the link between online representations and their physical counterparts. This sort of phenomenology visualizes a doubled cultural mimesis that can be described by the story of the ship of Theseus, where the original is replaced by an ongoing process of installing new components. In this sense, social reality is conceptualized as having real cultural events and the production of cultural items as well as having digital reproductions that appear and circulate online. These are accessed by a variety of platforms where reality is simulated onsite through augmented reality technology or remotely through forms of virtual reality. This paper seeks to frame and to present this notion and its potential impacts on destination culture particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic in Korea.

      • Inflammation induces mitochondrial dysfunction and dopaminergic neurodegeneration in the nigrostriatal system

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Evidence suggests that chronic inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and oxidative stress play significant and perhaps synergistic roles in Parkinson’s disease (PD), where the primary pathology is significant loss of the dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. The use of anti‐inflammatory drugs for PD treatment has been proposed, and inhibition of cyclo‐oxygenase‐2 (COX‐2) or activation of peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor gamma (PPAR‐γ) yields neuroprotection in MPTP‐induced PD. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induces inflammation‐driven dopaminergic neurodegeneration. We tested the hypothesis that celecoxib (Celebrex, COX‐2 inhibitor) or pioglitazone (Actos, PPAR‐γ agonist) will reduce the LPS‐induced inflammatory response, spare mitochondrial bioenergetics, and improve nigral dopaminergic neuronal survival. Rats were treated with vehicle, celecoxib, or pioglitazone and were intrastriatally injected with LPS. Inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, decreased dopamine, and nigral dopaminergic neuronal loss were observed post‐LPS. Celecoxib and pioglitazone provided neuroprotective properties by decreasing inflammation and restoring mitochondrial function. Pioglitazone also attenuated oxidative stress and partially restored striatal dopamine as well as demonstrated dopaminergic neuroprotection and reduced nigral microglial activation. In summary, intrastriatal LPS served as a model for inflammation‐induced dopaminergic neurodegeneration, anti‐inflammatory drugs provided protective properties, and pioglitazone or celecoxib may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of neuro‐inflammation and PD.</P>
