Wastewater treatment after electroless nickel plating runs has been known to be difficult and this has been a subject of worldwide concern. Discarding wastewater of electroless nickel plating into sea was prohibited under the London Dumping Treaty since 1996. We have studied on recovering nickel from wastewater by reduction crystallization. In this study, the characteristics of nickel ion removal and recovery were investigated in the process of reduction crystallization using a laboratory scale batch crystallizer (500 ml). in order to propose a new process for wastewater treatment from nickel plating. In the reduction crystallization, which can use hypophosphite ion as a reducing agent for nickel ion in the wastewater, nickel ion could be recovered as a form of nickel metal by seeding nickel powder having large specific surface area.
Similarity of Intracellular Signaling Toward Apoptosis Following UVB and UVC Irradiation

UV irradiation activates various intracellular signaling pathways causing cell death in a DNA damage-dependent and an independent manner. As DNA photoproducts, major forms of DNA damage, are maximally formed by UV light at 260-nm, short wavelength UV (UVC) is more harmful than middle wavelength UV (UVB). However, the differences or similarities in responses of DNA damage-independent intracellular signaling molecules to UVB and UVC are not elucidated. We examined activation of signaling molecules towards apoptosis in normal human fibroblastic cells after irradiation with UVB or UVC at a dose generating the equal amount of DNA photoproducts. Both UVB and UVC induced transient phosphorylation of ERK and sustained phosphorylation of p38. Phosphorylation of p53 at Ser15 and at Ser392 residues were also observed, which were inhibited by a phosphoinositide 3-kinase inhibitor, wortmannin. In contrast, an antioxidant N-acetyl-cysteine and a p38 inhibitor SB203580 suppressed only Ser392 phosphorylation, suggesting that UV-induced oxidative stress and p38 activation were involved in the phosphorylation of this site. The apoptic signals such as mitochondrial cytochrome C release and annexin V binding were then observed. Overall, no difference was found in chronological responses of p53, MAPK, and apoptosis between UVB-irradiated and UVC-irradiated cells. These results suggested that DNA damage-independent intracellular signaling molecules similarly responded to UVB and UVC when the equal level of DNA photoproducts were generated.
Body twist estimation algorithm using 3-axis acceleration sensor and magnetic sensor

We propose a new type of body twist measurement sensor using a 3-axis acceleration sensor and 3-axis magnetic sensor that may be applicable to sports form measurement. To measure the body twist angle, we combined the 3-axis acceleration vector and 3-axis magnetic vector by applying the singular-value decomposition technique. PSoC was used as an elemental test for the developed measurement sensor. To confirm the measurement of body twist angle, we compared it to that of several skilled baseball batters. The results suggest that the proposed method would be useful for estimating body twist angle.

In multi-carrier transmission systems, although the in-band IM products have been significantly investigated and evaluated, the accurate evaluation of the IM products outside the pass-band necessitates the equivalent conditions to the actual operations because the IM products deeply depend on the operating conditions of the concerned radio equipment. On the other hand, in case of communication satellites, it is difficult and is not a practical way to prepare the operating conditions that simulate the actual operations at the testing time flame of equipment. In this paper, a correlation between the IM products outside the pass-band, which have been discussed, and the operating conditions of the concerned radio equipment is clearly shown by the quantitative evaluations based on experiments. This paper also discusses a suitable thinking way of parameters (mean power, the necessary bandwidth) in the multi-career transmission systems, and the evaluations of the IM products that behave as the spurs outside the pass-band by using the generally used parameters for the radio equipments, NPR
