<P>Theoretically core–multishell nanowires under a cross-section of hexagonal geometry should exhibit peculiar confinement effects. Using a hard X-ray nanobeam, here we show experimental evidence for carrier localization phenomena at the hexagon corners by combining synchrotron excited optical luminescence with simultaneous X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Applied to single coaxial n-GaN/InGaN multiquantum-well/p-GaN nanowires, our experiment narrows the gap between optical microscopy and high-resolution X-ray imaging and calls for further studies on the underlying mechanisms of optoelectronic nanodevices.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/nalefd/2012/nalefd.2012.12.issue-11/nl303178u/production/images/medium/nl-2012-03178u_0007.gif'></P>

Population aging in Nepal is a recent phenomenon, due more to demographic changes than tosocio-economic development. The study had three goals: to analyze the social support exchangeamong elderly men and women; to discover the main sources of support in loneliness and subjectivewell-being in the elderly; and to study the cross-cultural differences in support among elderlyChhetri (N = 137, mean age = 69.1 [7.2] years) and Newar people (N = 195, mean age = 68.8[7.7] years) in one ward in Kathmandu. The data were collected using face-to-face interviews. Thedependent variables were loneliness and subjective well-being (SWB). The results for both ethnicChhetri and Newar respondents show that their major support comes from their children living inthe same household and their spouses. I conclude that the sources of social support and social supportexchange are similar between the two castes ⁄ ethnicities and that there are no cross-cultural differencesbetween them in terms of support for loneliness and SWB-life stability, although there arecross-cultural differences in their SWB-life satisfaction. Providing social support to friends andneighbors appears to be related to less loneliness and increased SWB in both castes ⁄ ethnicities.
Solute Carrier SLC41A1 "A MINI REVIEW"

The human solute carrier, SLC41A1, is a Mg²+ transporter that is regulated by extracellular magnesium. Although intracellular magnesium plays a fundamental role in cellular metabolism, little is known about how Mg²+ is taken up and controlled by cells. Magnesium plays a fundamental role in cellular metabolism so that its control within the body is critical. Magnesium homeostasis is principally a balance between intestinal absorption of dietary magnesium and renal excretion of urinary magnesium. The kidney, mainly the distal convoluted tubule, controls magnesium reabsorption. Although renal reabsorption is under the influence of many hormones, selective regulation of magnesium transport is due to intrinsic control involving transcriptional processes and synthesis of transport proteins. Using microarray analysis, identification of the genetic elements involved with this transcriptional control has been begun. SLC41A1 (GenBank Accession No. AJ514402), comprises 10 putative transmembrane domains, two of which are highly homologous to the integral membrane part of the prokaryote transports Mg²+ and other divalent cations Sr²+, Zn²+, Cu²+, Fe²+, Co²+, Ba²+, and Cd²+ but not Ca2+, Mn²+, and Ni2+. Transport of Mg²+ by SLC41A1 is rheogenic, voltage dependent, and not coupled to Na or Cl . Expressed SLC41A1 transports a range of other divalent cations: Mg²+, Sr²+, Zn²+, Cu²+, Fe²+, Co²+, Ba²+, and Cd²+. The divalent cations Ca²+, Mn²+, and Ni²+ and the trivalent ion Gd³+ did not induce currents nor did they inhibit Mg²+ transport. The nonselective cation La3+ abolishes Mg²+ uptake. Computer analysis of the SLC41A1 protein structure reveals that it belongs to MgtE protein family & suggested that the human solute carrier, SLC41A1, might be a eukaryotic Mg²+ transporter closely related (60-70%) protein encoded by SLC41A2 is a Mg²+ transporter that might be involved in magnesium homeostasis in epithelial cells also transports a range of other divalent cations: Ba², Ni², Co², Fe², or Mn², but not Ca², Zn², or Cu²+ that may have related functional properties.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a causative agent of erysipelas in avian and mammalian species globally. Eight dead 5-week-old Ross broiler chickens were submitted for diagnostic tests in September 2005. Typical signs including white necrotic foci on the liver, focal congestion of the pancreas, severe atrophy and hardening of the bursa of Fabricius were detected. E. rhusiopathiae was isolated from haemorrhagic lung samples. However, no specific PCR product for the viral diseases tested was detected in these chicken samples. To our best knowledge, this is the first report of the isolation of E. rhusiopathiae in broiler chickens in Korea.
Intermodal Logistics Policies:Where Do We Stand Internationally?

This paper defines the emerging intermodal issues, identifies alternative solutions and develops strategies to achieve them. It reviews intermodal logistics policies in the EU, NAFTA and Asia, focusing on the United States and Japan in NAFTA and Asia respectively, because they have been the prominent motors of international trade in their regions. From an Asian standpoint, it is a pity that it is not yet possible to report on a common intermodal strategy.

Based on the conceptual design of an advanced wind turbine tower system, use of ultra-high-performance cementitious composites material with compressive strength of 200 MPa (UHPC-200) is proposed to ensure high durability and ductility of the UHPC hybrid wind turbine tower. Key design parameters are proposed for the structural design of a 3-MW wind turbine. The material properties, mixing compositions, simplified constitutive relationship, and model parameters are outlined. Using nonlinear finite element analysis, the effects of wall thickness, wall thickness ratio, and prestressing tendon on the structural performance including the longitudinal stress field, lateral displacement, stress concentration at the transition zone between the middle and bottom segments are evaluated. Based on the stress-field analysis, the design limitation of the segmental wall thickness and its ratio is recommended. The numerical results show that the tower with the wall thickness ratio of 2:3 (i.e., thickness 200–300 mm) with prestressing tendons is an optimal design for the UHPC hybrid tower. The results of this study can be used as a reference for the engineering design of a new type of UHPC hybrid wind turbine tower.
Validation of the Korean Depressive Symptom Inventory-Suicidality Subscale

Objective: The present study aimed to validate a Korean version of the self-report Depressive Symptom Inventory-Suicidality Subscale (DSI-SS). Methods: 553 South Korean undergraduate students (aged 18–34 years, 74.8% females) completed questionnaires. Participants completed Korean versions of the self-report Depressive Symptom Inventory-Suicidality Subscale (DSI-SS), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSS), and a measure of suicide-related symptom history. Results: Results indicated that the DSI-SS demonstrated excellent internal consistency (α=0.93) and strong convergent validity with the BDI (r=0.57, p<0.01), ISI (r=0.27, p<0.01), and BSS (r=0.70, p<0.01). DSI-SS scores also significantly differentiated between those reporting a history of suicide attempts compared to non-suicide attempters [t (38.80)=-3.28, p<0.05]. Conclusion: Given the brevity of this measure, and evidence for its validity, the Korean version of the DSI-SS may be particularly promising for clinical and empirical use as a screening tool among South Korean undergraduates.
