Recognition accuracy obtained using deep learning drops precipitously when the training data are insufficient. This paper presents a data-expansion method for training of the transfer learning source domain. Using expanding images generated from weights on a category map as source data, we compared accuracies obtained from five derivative models and our previously reported method. Moreover, we obtained the result of domain adaptation between actual images and synthetic images using weights obtained during transfer learning. Based on those results, we verify whether the amount of training data can be expanded quantitatively and qualitatively. Experiment results obtained from two open benchmark datasets and our original benchmark dataset demonstrated that our proposed method outperforms the previous method under a guarantee of sufficient accuracy for the synthetic images.

DNA methylation in Streptomyces griseus IFO 13350 was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatographic analysis and bisulfite-based analysis to reveal two methylation sites, 5`-GC5mCGGC-3` and 5`-GAG5mCTC-3`. The methylation was reconstituted in Escherichia coli by simultaneous expression of S. griseus SGR4675 and S. achromogenes M.SacI. The E. coli cells produced plasmids that mimicked the methylation profile of S. griseus DNA, which was readily introduced into S. griseus. The results of this study raise the possibility of a promising approach to establish efficient transformation in several streptomycetes.

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>Rice is the only crop that germinates and elongates the coleoptile under complete submergence. It has been shown that <I>alcohol dehydrogenase 1 (ADH1)-</I>deficient mutant of rice with <I>reduced alcohol dehydrogenase activity</I> (<I>rad</I>) and reduced ATP level, is viable with much reduced coleoptile elongation under such condition. To understand the altered transcriptional regulatory mechanism of this mutant, we aimed to establish possible relationships between gene expression and <I>cis</I>-regulatory information content.</P><P><B>Findings</B></P><P>We performed promoter analysis of the publicly available differentially expressed genes in <I>ADH1</I> mutant. Our results revealed that a crosstalk between a number of key transcription factors (TFs) and different phytohormones altered transcriptional regulation leading to the survival of the mutant. Amongst the key TFs identified, we suggest potential involvement of MYB, bZIP, ARF and ERF as transcriptional activators and WRKY, ABI4 and MYC as transcriptional repressors of coleoptile elongation to maintain metabolite levels for the cell viability. Out of the repressors, WRKY TF is most likely playing a major role in the alteration of the physiological implications associated with the cell survival.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Overall, our analysis provides a possible transcriptional regulatory mechanism underlying the survival of the <I>rad</I> mutant under complete submergence in an energy crisis condition and develops hypotheses for further experimental validation.</P><P><B>Electronic supplementary material</B></P><P>The online version of this article (doi:10.1186/s12284-016-0124-3) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.</P>
Parallel Implementation of Saliency Maps for Real-Time Robot Vision

This paper presents a parallel implementation model for real-time video image processing of saliency maps (SMs), which are a model to predict gaze directions based on human visual attention. It can extract high visual saliency regions that differ from surroundings in scene images. In computer vision, SMs are used for various applications because of the sparse feature representation. As an implementation device, we use IMAPCAR2, which is a single instruction multiple data (SIMD) processor with 64 processing elements (PEs). The features of IMAPCAR2 are high performance, low power consumption, and easy programming using one-dimensional C (1DC) of the ANSI-C compatible. We compared the performance of a sequential model and our parallel model for all steps. The processing speed of our model was 250 times higher than that of the sequential model. We compared our model with the existing parallel model. The processing speed of our model was 5.6 times higher than that of the existing model. For real-time video image processing, we implemented our model on an IMAPCAR2 evaluation board. The processing cost was 47.5 ms for the video images of 640 × 240 pixel resolution.

We developed a multi-Fabry-Pérot etalon (multi-FPE) for selecting high-frequency parts of repetition-frequency modes of a shortpulsemode-locked fiber laser at the wavelength of 1.55 mm. The 5-GHz repetition-modified laser beam is transmitted to a fiber-typeMichelson interferometer. The interference fringes exhibit a temporal coherence pattern and can be used for measuring spatialpositioning. The performance of CMM’s axis was determined directly from different positions of two interference fringes.

Background: It is well known that peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) from colorectal cancer (CRC) is associated with a poor prognosis. However, data on the prognostic significance of modern chemotherapy containing bevacizumab, cetuximab or panitumumab are not available. Materials and Methods: This retrospective review concerned 526 patients with metastatic CRC who were classified into two groups according to the presence or absence of PC, and were treated with systemic chemotherapy, with or without bevacizumab or anti-EGFR antibodies. The genetic background, in particular KRAS, BRAF, and PIK3CA gene mutations, and overall survival (OS) were compared between the two groups. Results: The median OS values were 23.3 and 29.1 months for PC and non-PC patients, respectively (hazard ratio [HR]=1.20; p=0.17). Among all patients, tumor location, number of metastatic sites and BRAF mutation status were significant prognostic factors, whereas the presence of PC was not. In the PC group, chemotherapy with bevacizumab resulted in a significantly longer OS than forchemotherapy without bevacizumab (HR=0.38, p<0.01), but this was not the case in the non-PC group (HR=0.80, p=0.10). Furthermore, the incidence of the BRAF V600E mutation was significantly higher in PC than in non-PC patients (27.7% versus 7.3%, p<0.01). BRAF mutations displayed a strong correlation with shorter OS in non-PC (HR=2.26), but not PC patients (HR=1.04). Conclusions: Systemic chemotherapy, especially when combined with bevacizumab, improved survival in patients with PC from CRC as well as non-PC patients. While BRAF mutation demonstrated a high frequency in PC patients, but it was not associated with prognosis.
