Synthesis and Applications of Dicationic Iodide Materials for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been receiving growing attentions as a potential alternative to order photovoltaic devices due to their high efficiency and low manufacturing cost. DSSCs are composed of a photosensitizing dye adsorbed on a mesoporous film of nanocrystalline $TiO_2$ as a photoelectrode, an electrolyte containing triiodide/iodide redox couple, and a platinized counter electrode. To improve photovoltaic properties of DSSCs, new dicationic salts based on ionic liquids were synthesized. Quite comparable efficiencies were obtained from electrolytes with new dicationic iodide salts. The best cell performance of 7.96% was obtained with dicationic salt of PBDMIDI.

MauG catalyzes the six-electron oxidation of pre-tryptophan tryptophylquinone (preTTQ) cofactor in methylamine dehydrogenase (MADH) to form mature tryptophan tryptophylquinone (TTQ) via long-range electron transfer. To identify alternative substrates for MauG, docking models for 10 tryptophan-like compounds were constructed using Autodock Vina. These demonstrated spontaneous binding to the preTTQ binding site of MauG, with hydroxyindoles most frequently sharing the natural substrate binding site of MauG. To confirm the result of in silico analysis, 7-hydroxyindole was reacted with bis-FeIV of MauG. The spectroscopic change, representing the reactivity of MauG, revealed the highly increased reaction rate (k3) toward 7-hydroxyindole, suggesting that bis-FeIV MauG extracted an electron from the 7-hydroxyindole and then oxidized to di-ferric MauG.
Identification of STAM1 as a novel effector of ventral projection of spinal motor neurons

<P>During spinal cord development, motor neuron (MN) axons exit the spinal cord ventrally, although the molecular basis for this process remains poorly understood. STAM1 and HRS form a complex involved with endosomal targeting of cargo proteins, including the chemokine receptor CXCR4. Interestingly, the absence of CXCR4 signaling in spinal MNs is known to result in improper extension of the axons into the dorsal side of the spinal cord. Here, we report that the MN-specific ISL1-LHX3 complex directly transactivates the Stam1 gene and that STAM1 functions in determining the ventral spinal MN axonal projections. STAM1 is co-expressed with HRS in embryonic spinal MNs, and knockdown of STAM1 in the developing chick spinal cord results in downregulation of CXCR4 expression, accompanied by dorsally projecting motor axons. Interestingly, overexpression of STAM1 or CXCR4 also results in dorsal projection of motor axons, suggesting that proper CXCR4 protein level is necessary for the ventral motor axon trajectory. Our results reveal a crucial regulatory axis for the ventral axonal trajectory of developing spinal MNs, consisting of the ISL1-LHX3 complex, STAM1 and CXCR4.</P>

Chick-lit, which is a compound word from the words “chick” (slang for young woman) and “literature,” has become the dominant contemporary female popular narrative. The genre focuses on the lives of modern women who live in metropolitan cities like New York and London. Even though chick-lit has become mainstream in women’s popular culture since the late 20th century, it faces two major criticisms regarding the romance plot and excessive consumerism in its novels. This paper seeks possible ways to overcome these criticisms. First, this paper reconsiders the status of women’s literature as well as examines the prejudice against the romance plot in women’s popular narratives. Traditionally, women’s literature has not been highly regarded or represented in major literary criticism, and women’s popular cultural productions, such as soap operas, romance novels and romantic comedy films, are often disdained as inferior. However, feminism movements as well as several female-audience researches have tried to overcome such disdain for women’s literature and culture. Nevertheless, chick-lit has also been attacked by some feminist circles because of the romance plot element. Against such attacks, we should remember that chick-lit has originated from the post-feminism movement, which emphasizes an awareness of women’s culture in order to upgrade the position of women in society. To defend chick-lit from the criticism on its excess reflection of consumerism, the peculiar culture and values of postmodern society should be reviewed. Postmodernism is distinguished by an emphasis on symbols and images that replace “reality.” Women’s deep attachment to consumerism in chick-lit largely reflects the reality that modern women face. However, the female characters in chick-lit rather have firm grasps of the facts that capitalism and patriarchy are closely related to female oppression. Therefore, they have abilities not to be indiscreetly carried along by consumerism. To sum up, chick-lit exhibits the potential to generate oppositional values in a society that is still under the influence of patriarchy. However, to fully function as the representative contemporary female popular narrative, chick-lit should demonstrate shrewd criticisms on current women’s problems and feature alternative ways to solve them.

Jane Austen's novels have been highly regarded as the masterpiece of British literature and now they are the representative figures of high culture. However, they were considered as popular narratives in that period since novel was not acknowledged as one of the genres in high culture. Therefore, the aim of this paper is re-reading Austen's pride and prejudice as popular narrative to find out its true aesthetics in relation with the prevalent narrative styles and the 'structure of feeling' of the early 19th century British society when the big social mobility occurred among the classes. To detect aesthetic elements as a popular narrative in Pride and Prejudice, specific aesthetic elements of popular culture should be premised. One of the most distinguished aesthetic elements in popular culture could be referred as the ability to communicate with daily lives. To support this, John Dewey's idea in Art as an experience and paul Willis's "ground aesthetics" theory were introduced. Both emphasize the symbolic significance of daily lives and the communication with real world in popular culture. The most noticeable aesthetic value in Austen's Pride and Prejudice lies in the insightful description of the society through the romance plot which was the most popular female narrative styles of the period and in settlement of its stereotypical form through illustrating the spirit of times. Austen showed the spirit with the new woman figure and even with marriage relationship as well as with the humorous and satirical narrative style, free indirect discourse. Austen's aesthetic achievement in Pride and Prejudice was feasible due to the endeavor to communicate with the real lives of the times, which was the original force of the birth of novel that was created with the formation of modern British civil society.
