Time Series Evaluation of Visual Fatigue and Depth Sensation Using a Stereoscopic Display

Conventional stereoscopic (3D) displays using binocular parallax generate unnatural conflicts between convergence and accommodation. These conflicts can affect the observer’s ability to fuse binocular images and may cause visual fatigue. In this study, time series changes in visual fatigue and depth sensation when viewing stereoscopic images with changing parallax were examined. In particular, the physiological changes, including the subjective symptoms of visual fatigue, when viewing five parallax conditions, were examined. Then a comparative analysis of the 2D and 3D conditions was performed based on the visual function. To obtain data regarding the visual function, the time series changes in the spontaneous-blinking rate before and during the viewing of 3D images were measured. The time series change results suggest that 2D and 3D images cause significantly different types of visual fatigue over the range of binocular disparity.

<P>관-Agarase hydrolyzes the 관-1,3 linkage of agarose yielding agaro-oligosaccharides. It is less well characterized than 관-agarase. AgaA gene (2.3 kb ORF), encoding the 관-agarase from Thalassomonas JAMB A33, was subcloned into both a constitutive and an inducible expression vector. Both the constructed plasmids, pVT-AgaA (ADH1 promoter) and pYInu-AgaA (GAL10 promoter), were transformed into Saccharomyces cerevisiae SEY2102 and FY833 and pPIC9-AgaA harboring the AOX1 promoter was transformed into Pichia pastoris GS115. The recombinant 관-agarases were over-expressed with activities from 0.3 to 1.6 unit/ml, the highest being in the SEY2102/pYInu-AgaA transformant. Most of the recombinant 관-agarase was extracellular because each plasmid possesses a signal sequence for the secretory production of 관-agarase. In contrast, the Pichia host-vector expression system was unsuitable for the production of recombinant 관-agarase. This is the first report of recombinant production of 관-agarase in yeast for industrial use.</P>

Drift displacement data based estimation of cumulative plastic deformation ratios for buildings

The authors’ research group has developed a noncontact type of sensors which directly measurethe inter-story drift displacements of a building during a seismic event. Soon after that event, suchseismically-induced drift displacement data would provide structural engineers with useful information tojudge how the stories have been damaged. This paper presents a scheme of estimating the story cumulativeplastic deformation ratios based on such measured drift displacement information toward the building safetymonitoring. The presented scheme requires the data of story drift displacements and the ground motionacceleration. The involved calculations are rather simple without any detailed information on structuralelements required: the story hysteresis loops are first estimated and then the cumulative plastic deformationratio of each story is evaluated from the estimated hysteresis. The effectiveness of the scheme isdemonstrated by utilizing the data of full-scale building model experiment performed at E-defense andconducting numerical simulations.
