<P>We synthesized hierarchically branched silver nanostructures (HBAgNSs) with distinctive morphologies and optical properties using non-ionic triblock copolymers under a variety of conditions. The synthetic conditions in terms of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and temperature (CMT) are judiciously controlled to determine how the polymers in the form of micelles or unimers play a significant role in the growth of the nanostructures. The surface of the silver nanostructures can be densely functionalized with DNA, which is further utilized for the multiplexed colorimetric detection of three DNA targets in conjunction with plasmonic nanoparticle probes.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>Hierarchically branched silver nanostructures with controllable morphologies and optical properties were synthesized using non-ionic triblock copolymers and investigated in association with their micelle/unimer properties. <P>We propose a compact fiber-pigtailed InGaAs photoconductive antenna (FPP) module having an effective heat-dissipation solution as well as a module volume of less than 0.7 cc. The heat-dissipation of the FPP modules when using a heat-conductive printed circuit board (PCB) and an aluminium nitride (AlN) submount, without any cooling systems, improve by 40% and 85%, respectively, when compared with a photoconductive antenna chip on a conventional PCB. The AlN submount is superior to those previously reported as a heat-dissipation solution. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) using the FPP module perfectly detects the absorption lines of water vapor in free space and an a-lactose sample. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America</P>
Clinical characterization of 3-month-old pigs infected with African swine fever virus from Vietnam

African swine fever (ASF) is a fatal viral disease in pigs, with a short incubation period and causing immediate death. Few studies exist on the Asian epidemic ASF virus (ASFV) challenge in older pigs, including growing and fattening pigs and sows. We aimed to investigate clinical outcomes, patho-morphological lesions, and viral distribution in organs of 3-month-old growing pigs that were inocu-lated with the ASFV isolated in Vietnam. The clinical outcomes were recorded daily, and the dead or euthanized pigs immediately underwent necropsy. Viral loads were determined in 10 major organs using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The average incubation period in growing pigs was more delayed (5.2±0.9 dpi) than that in weaned pigs, and the clinical signs were milder in growing pigs than in weaned pigs. The digestive and respiratory clinical signs in growing pigs showed at the end period of life, but these were observed at an early stage of infection in weaned pigs. The patho-morphological features were severe and nonspecific with hemorrhagic lesions in various organs. The viral loads in organs from growing pigs were higher than those from piglets, and the number of viral copies was related to gross lesions in the tonsil and intestine. In the absence of vaccines against ASF, early clinical detection is important for preventing the spread of the virus. Our findings elucidated that the clinical signs and gross lesions in growing pigs differed from those in weaned pigs, which provide valuable information for diagnosis of pigs with suspected ASF infection.

<P>In this paper, the transformer-type superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) with common connection point between two secondary windings, which was similar structure to the previously suggested transformer-type SFCL with two triggering levels, was proposed and their current limiting characteristics were compared. The suggested transformer-type SFCLs consist of the primary winding and two secondary windings with common connection point. However, the current limiting operations through two triggering levels, which can be generally adjusted by the winding direction and the number of turns between two secondary windings, are affected by the application position of two high-<TEX>${\rm{T}}_{{\rm{C}}}$</TEX> superconducting (HTSC) elements into the transformer type SFCL with common connection point. To analyze the dependence of the current limiting operation on the application position of two HTSC elements, the short-circuit tests for the transformer-type SFCL with two different positions of two HTSC elements were carried out and their current limiting characteristics were compared from the point of view of the power burden and the accumulated energy of two HTSC elements comprising each transformer-type SFCL.</P>
Numerical Model Estimating Chloride Penetration-Profile in Marine Concrete Structure

New chloride diffusion coefficient is proposed in order to estimate the effect of chloride binding and evaporable water on chloride ion penetration in marine concrete structure. A finite element method program developed on the basis of the new diffusion coefficient provides an estimation of chloride concentration according to concrete depth, external and internal conditions, and the predicted chloride concentrations are compared with experimental values. The new diffusion coefficient, which is presented as functions of chloride binding, evaporable water and intrinsic diffusion coefficient, varies greatly according to water-cement ratio. But, curing temperature does not have a significant influence on the ratio of modified diffusion coefficient to intrinsic diffusion coefficient. The FEM program using the modified diffusion coefficient estimates experimental chloride concentrations in a little error range. The numerical analysis for internal and external conditions proposes that the most effective way to reduce chloride ion penetration is to decrease water-cement ratio.
