      • Needle Deflection during Insertion into Soft Tissue Based on Virtual Spring Model

        Needle insertion is the most common procedure of minimally invasive interventions. During insertion into a soft tissue, the needle with bevel tip can deflect due to the asymmetric forces acting on the tip of the needle. In this paper, a mechanics-based model is developed to predict the needle deflection. In the model, the needle is considered as a cantilever beam supported by a series of nonlinear springs each of which has stiffness different from each other. The value of stiffness can be calculated by cutting force acting on the needle tip. Based on the model and the analysis of cutting force and friction force, Rayleigh-Ritz method is used to estimate the amount of needle deflection. Experiment shows that the simulation model can accurately predict the deflection of the bevel-tipped needle.

        Sub-level Classification and Prediction System of Fully Weathered Red Sandstone Rock Mass Based on Physical Property Indices

        This paper intends to obtain a sub-level classification of fully weathered red sandstone rock mass during the Cretaceous period based on physical property indices. An automatic prediction system for mechanical properties of rock mass is also established in which the values of rock mass grade and mechanical properties can be returned when physical indices are given. In this study, water content, relative compaction, and fine content, which are relatively easy to measure on tunnel sites, are selected as physical property indices, while cohesion, internal friction angle, and compression modulus, which affect mechanical strength, are taken as mechanical indices. For the convenience of analysis, rock mass of different physical states is divided into 18 different combinations based on the results of lab tests and rock mass stability of each state is evaluated using a stability evaluation criterion we put forward. The numerical simulation of tunnel excavation is further carried out for determining the sub-level classification. A decision tree model is applied for further studying the relationship between physical and mechanical indices to ensure accurate prediction. The result shows that the prediction system works with high accuracy and can be used for engineering reference for fully weathered red sandstone rock mass.

        Effects of Antioxidant Tempol on Systematic Inflammation and Endothelial Apoptosis in Emphysematous Rats Exposed to Intermittent Hypoxia

        Purpose: Obstructive sleep apnea and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are independent risk factors of cardiovascular disease(CVD), and their coexistence is known as overlap syndrome (OS). Endothelial dysfunction is the initial stage of CVD; however,underlying mechanisms linking OS and CVD are not well understood. The aim of this study was to explore whether OS canlead to more severe inflammation and endothelial apoptosis by promoting endothelial dysfunction, and to assess the interventioneffects of antioxidant tempol. Materials and Methods: Male Wistar rats (n=66) were exposed to normal oxygen [normal control (NC) group], intermittent hypoxia(IH group), cigarette smoke (CH group), as well as cigarette smoke and IH (OS group). Tempol intervention was assessed inOS group treated with tempol (OST group) or NaCl (OSN group). After an 8-week challenge, lung tissues, serum, and fresh bloodwere harvested for analysis of endothelial markers and apoptosis. Results: The levels of intracellular adhesion molecule-1, vascular cellular adhesion molecule-1, and apoptosis in circulating epithelialcells were the highest in OS group and the lowest in NC group. These levels were all greater in IH group than in CH group,and were lower in OST group than in OS and OSN groups (all p<0.001). Conclusion: Synergistic effects of IH with cigarette smoke-induced emphysema produce a greater inflammatory status and endothelialapoptosis. OS-related inflammation and endothelial cell apoptosis may play important roles in promoting cardiovasculardysfunction, and antioxidant tempol could achieve a partial protective effect.

        A prevalence survey of Wolbachia in Polytremis fukia (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae)

        Wolbachia are endosymbiotic bacteria that infect arthropod and nematode hosts. Only a few studies have been made on Wolbachia in butterflies. In this study, we identified and determined the molecular characteristics of Wolbachia strains in Polytremis fukia (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae), from seven locations in China. We also sequenced three portions of the mitochondrial DNA from the individuals of P. fukia to infer the effect of Wolbachia on host mitochondrial variation. The results show that 47% (15/32) are Wolbachia positive among all specimens. The infection rates in female and male are 69% (11/16) and 25% (4/16). Phylogenetic analysis of variation in the ftsZ gene from the two strains of Wolbachia (wFuk1 and wFuk2) showed they belonged to supergroup A. On the phylogeny of the mitochondrialDNA fromP. fukia, the sequences are split into three clades. Clade I and II are consistent with the distribution of geographical population. Clade III consists of eight females invariably infected with wFuk1which showed aweak association existed between mitochondrial DNA haplotypes andwFuk1 infection status.

        Expression of Human FGF18 by Fusion with Oleosin in Arabidopsis thaliana Seeds

        Expression of recombinant human fibroblast growthfactor 18 (hFGF18) in mammalian cells and Escherichia colihas been extensively used for fundamental research andclinical applications, but they are difficult, expensive. Theexpression of recombinant proteins fused to oleosin proteinhave distinct advantages, such as safety, ease, low cost. Sowe have expressed hFGF18 fused to oleosin protein in the oilbodies of Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana) and screen theproliferation effect of NIH3T3 cells. The vector of oleosinhFGF18fusion gene was constructed and transformed intowild A. thaliana. Transformed A. thaliana lines were obtainedby the floral dip method and confirmed using polymerasechain reaction (PCR). The PCR results indicated that theoleosin-hFGF18 fusion gene was integrated into the A. thaliana genome. The oil bodies expression of oleosin-hFGF18was confirmed by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamidegel electrophoresis and western blotting. The biologicalactivity showed that oil bodies expressing oleosin-hFGF18could stimulate the proliferation of NIH3T3 cells.

        Dynamic behavior of lifting pipe with equivalent model under mining vessel heave motion

        The lifting pipe is a key component of deep sea mining whose dynamic response directly affects the safety of the lift-ing operation. The objective of this paper was to investigate the effects of heave motion and sailing velocity of mining vessel and the buffer mass on the dynamic response of lifting pipe. First, an equivalent model of the lifting pipe was established, and the natural frequency and dynamic response of the lifting pipe equivalent model were determined with consideration of the wave action by the method of separated variables. Secondly, the reliability of the equivalent model was verified by simulating a 5000 m stepped pipe with OrcaFlex software. Then the dynamic displacement, axial tension, axial stress of the lifting pipe under different sea conditions and sailing velocities were studied, and the main factors affecting the dynamic response of the pipe described. By comparing the simulation results of actual and equivalent models, the equivalent model can be used to analyze the longitudinal vibration characteristics of the lifting pipe. The sailing velocity of the mining vessel has little effect on the dynamic response of the lifting pipe, but the surface wave has a significant effect.

      • Adenovirus-mediated Expression of Both Antisense Ornithine Decarboxylase and S-adenosylmethionine Decarboxylase Induces G<sub>1</sub> Arrest in HT-29 Cells

        To evaluated the effect of recombinant adenovirus Ad-ODC-AdoMetDCas which can simultaneously express both antisense ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) and S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase (AdoMetDC) on cell cycle distribution in colorectal cancer cell and investigated underlying regulatory responses, human colorectal cancer cells HT-29 were cultured in RPMI 1640 medium and infected with Ad-ODC-AdoMetDCas. Cell cycle progression was detected by flow cytometry analysis. The expression levels of cell cycle regulated proteins were measured by Western blot analysis. The mRNA level of cyclin D1 was measured by RT-PCR. And a luciferase reporter plasmid of cyclin D1 promoter was constructed to observe the effect of Ad-ODC-AdoMetDCas on cyclin D1 promoter activity. The results showed that recombinant adenovirus Ad-ODC-AdoMetDCas significantly induced $G_1$ arrest, decreased levels of cyclin D1 protein and mRNA and suppressed the promoter activity. Ad-ODC-AdoMetDCas also inhibited nuclear translocation of $\beta$-catenin. In conclusion, downregulation of ODC and AdoMetDC mediated by Ad-ODC-AdoMetDCas transfection induces $G_1$ arrest in HT-29 cells and the arrest was associated with suppression of cyclin D1 expression and inhibition of $\beta$-catenin nuclear translocation. As a new anticancer reagent, the recombinant adenovirus Ad-ODC-AdoMetDCas holds promising hope for the therapy of colorectal cancers.

        Differences in Phase Change Processes Upon Heating Between Co and Zn-ZIF-4 Compounds

        Zn and Co-ZIF-4 meta-stable compounds adopt the same topology of Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF)-4, but differ in the metal nodes (Zn versus Co). Using calorimetric and thermogravimetric analysis, here we characterized their differences in phase change processes. Upon heating, the framework of Co-ZIF-4 meta-stable crystal undergoes the crystal-to-amorphous phase transition at 590 K, which is somewhat lower than the corresponding transition previously reported in the corresponding Zn-ZIF-4. In addition, the recrystallization rate for amorphous Co-ZIF-4 is relatively higher than the corresponding one of Zn-ZIF-4. Finally, the forming Co–zni crystal begins to melt at about 824K, accompanied by quick decomposition, whereas Zn–zni undergoes complete melting which finishes at around 850K without any decomposition. Based on their differences in chemistry for Co and Zn, we elucidated the chemical origin of the discrepancies of phase transition process for Zn and Co-ZIF-4 compounds upon heating.

        A new multi-class classification method based on minimum enclosing balls

        With respect to classification problems, the Minimum enclosing ball (MEB) method was recently studied by some scholars as a newsupport vector machine. As a nascent technology, however, MEB reports poor adaptability for different types of samples, especiallymulti-class samples. In this paper, we propose a new multi-class classification method based on MEB. This method is derived from eachclass sample center and radius with the Gaussian kernel width factor parameter σ, which is labelled as σ-MEB. σ is a variable parameteraccording to the different sample characteristics. When this parameter is considered, the multi-class classifier is easy to adapt and is robustin diverse datasets. The quadratic programming problem was transformed into its dual form with Lagrange multipliers using thismethod. Finally, we applied sequential minimal optimization method and Karush—Kuhn—Tucker conditions to accelerate the trainingprocess. Numerical experiment results indicate that given different types of samples, the proposed method is more accurate than themethods with which it is compared. Moreover, the proposed method reports values in the upper quantile with respect to adaptation performance.

      • The Automatic Recognition of Large Ball Valve Sealing Bolt Based on Digital Image

        In this paper, we put forward an effective algorithm for edge detection based on combination of multi-shape/scale Mathematical morphology and wavelet transformation. Firstly, the bimodal method and multi-threshold method were combined for the image segmentation. Then, the image edge was detected by the algorithm. Finally, the angle between the bolt and manipulator was calculated using the rotation conversion matrix. With the systematic error and correlation coefficient, the calculated angle was verified. Experimental results show that the method can protect the edge integrity of the nut image, with fast processing speed and strong anti-noise ability. The work in this paper provides a theoretical basis for the automatic recognition in the large ball valve sealing bolt system.
