To determine the recovery time from noise-induced temporary threshold shift(TTS), a prospective field study was conducted at three worksites where workers are known to be exposed high level of noise. Subjects were selected according to answers on a questionnaire which inquired about otological history and previous noise exposure, including avocational, military and occupational exposures. After excluding employee with past otologic problems, recent exposure to high level noise, and under medications, total 92 employees participated in the study. Among 92 participants, complete consecutive audiometric examinations were carried out at 0∼2 hours, 5∼7 hours, 14∼16 hours after worktime noise exposure on 26 participants wearing hearing protectors and 22 participants wearing no protective devices. The difference between the hearing level 0∼2 hours after noise exposure and 5∼7 hours is statistically significant by paired t-test(p<0.01). The median recovery times calculated from the data of 22 participants wearing no protective hearing devices are 15.6 hours at 4000Hz, and 7.7 hours, 10.3 hours, 8.4 hours at 1000Hz, 2000Hz and 8000Hz respectively. These data suggest that when measuring the pure tone audiometry for noise exposed workers, at least 16 hours noise-free interval is required.
Effect of Girdling on the Fruit Quality and Harvest Date of the 'Shigyoku' Grapes

The present study was carried out to elucidate the effect of girdling on the quality and harvest date of the 'Shigyoku' grapes. Among girdled vines, the interval from full bloom to harvest date was 77 days; this was as much as seven days shorter in vines receiving a 20% girdling treatment. With regards to fruit characteristics, significant differences were observed in cluster length, berry number, and berry weight in vines that received girdling treatments. There were also significant differences in cluster weight; 468.2 g, 491.6 g and 504.9 g in the control group, 10% girdling group, and 20% girdling group, respectively. Thus, the use of girdling treatments is an effective approach to increasing cluster weight by 5% in the 10% girdling treatment and 8% in the 20% girdling treatment. The 10% girdling treatment showed significant difference in terms of titrable acidity; in fact, the overall titrable acidity was relatively high among all the girdling treatments. The concentration of anthocyanin increased in 20% girdling treatment, but there were no significant differences in anthocyanin concentration among girdling treatments. Berry color developed rapidly in vines that received girdling treatment.

Background: Plummer-Vinson Syndrome is a rare disease in middle-aged women with symptomatic hypopharyngeal webs, iron deficiency anemia, oral-hypopharyngeal mucosal lesions. A 30-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of dysphagia, inappropriate mastication, and dizziness. Three months ago above symptoms were aggravated, and she was transferred to our hospital under the impression of esophageal obstruction. On the admission, she was chronic ill-looking appearance with pale conjunctivae, poor oral hygiene, tongue atrophy. So we studied the patient under the impression of Plummer-Vinson Syndrome. Method: Work-up included CBC, PBS, serum iron and TIBC, esophagography, bone marrow studies, and esophagoscopy. Results: The peripheral blood exam. showed microcytic and hypochromic anemia with serum iron & TIBC of 53 ㎍/㎗ & 520 ㎍/㎗. Bone marrow study revealed markedly decreased iron stain. The esophagography and esophagoscopy showed web-like mucosal lesion on anterior wall of the upper esophagus. On the 11th hospital day, endoscopic dilatation with a bougie and iron supplementation were done with clinical improvement of dysphagia and abdominal pain. Six months after discharge, there was a gradual improvement in anemia, follow-up esophagography showed markedly dilatated upper esophagus than pre-dilatated state. Conclusion: We experienced a 30-year-old female with the chief complaints of dysphagia and oral mucosal lesion. After evaluation, we found a upper esophageal web and iron deficiency anemia and treated with endoscopic dilatation and iron supplementation. So we report Plummer-Vinson syndrome with the review of relevant literature.
