Japan’s sports diplomacy in the early post-Second World War years

This essay outlines key cases of sports diplomacy practiced by Japan with the assistance of the Allied Occupation Authorities after the Second World War. Both Japan and the occupation overlord employed sports to good effect as a tool for reshaping Japan’s national image as one of a rule-abiding civilized society and buttressing the idea of US–Japanese friendship during the Cold War. Both amateur and professional sports heroes played a part in these binational efforts.
Methoxide Promoted Electron-Transfer Reaction between 9-Methoxyfluorene and Cobalt(Ⅲ) Complex

카르보 음이온과 전이 금속 착물간의 전자이동반응의 메카니즘을 규명하는 연구의 결과와 메톡사이드/메타놀 용액 내에서의 Co(en)33+ 이온의 안정성에 대한 조사 결과를 전자이동반응에 대한 반응속도론 연구에 앞서서 보고한다. 먼저, 코발트(III) 트리스(에틸렌다이아민) 착물의 배위권은 전자이동반응 동안 고스란히 그대로 남아 있었다. 따라서 CO(en)33+와 9-메톡시플루오렌간의 전자이동과정은 외부권 메카니즘에 의한 것이라고 믿어진다. 그리고, CO(en)33+ 이온은 반응속도론 연구에서 진행하는 실험단위시간 (보통 두 시간) 동안 광학적으로 안정하다는 것을 알게 되었다. 또한, 라세미화 반응에 대한 카르본 산의 효과에 대해서도 조사해 보았는데 그 결과 카르본 산이 많이 존재하면 존재할수록 라세미화 반응은 더 빨리 발생하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. The results of the study in the determination of the mechanism of the electron-transfer reaction between carbanions and transition metal complexes, and the examination of the stability of Co(en)33+ ion in methoxide/methanol solution are reported prior to the further study of kinetics of the electron transfer reaction. First, the coordination sphere of cobalt(III) trim(ethylenediamine) complex remained intact during the electron-transfer reaction. Thus, the electron-transfer process between Co(en)33+ and 9-methoxyfluorene is believed to be of the outer-sphere mechanism. And, we found that Co(en)33+ ion can be regarded as optically stable for the time period of the kinetic studies, usually 2 hours. The effect of carbon acid on the racemization was also examined and it revealed that the more carbon acid present the faster the racemization occurs.
Marine macroalgae of the Aleutian Islands: I. Bangiales

We sequenced the rbcL gene in more than 100 collections of foliose Bangiales made in the Aleutian Islands and western Alaska Peninsula during the past 25 years. This work allows us to recognize four previously undescribed species, two in the genus Boreophyllum and two in Pyropia. Boreophyllum aleuticum appears to be endemic to the Aleutian Islands, whereas B. ambiguum is known to occur from the Yakutat area to the tip of the Alaska Peninsula. The two previously undescribed species of Pyropia are more broadly distributed. Pyropia taeniata, which was previously identified under the name Py. pseudolinearis, occurs from northern Southeast Alaska through the Aleutian Islands. Pyropia unabbottiae, which is sister to Py. abbottiae, occurs from southern Vancouver Island to Attu Island. Collections throughout the Aleutian Islands allow us to document the distribution of another dozen species of foliose Bangiales in this region, including Boreophyllum aestivale, Fuscifolium tasa, Pyropia fallax, Py. fucicola, Py. gardneri, Py. kurogii, Py. nereocystis, Py. pseudolanceolata, Py. torta, Wildemania amplissima, W. norrisii, and W. variegata. We were unable to confirm the occurrence of the following species previously recorded from the Aleutian Islands: Porphya ochotensis, Pyropia abbottiae, Py. perforata, Py. pseudolinearis, P. purpurea, P. umbilicalis, Py. yezoensis and Wildemania schizophylla. At least two undescribed filamentous Bangiales also occur in the Aleutian Islands.

The goal for this work was to characterize basic biological properties of a novel Arthrospira platensis-based aqueous cyanophyta extract (ACE), enriched in the known anti-inflammatory cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor phycocyanin (PC), but also containing a high level of non-PC bioactive compounds. Antioxidant properties were tested in parallel in the Folin–Ciocalteu assay (chemical antioxidant capacity) and in the cellular antioxidant protection (CAP-e) bioassay, where both the PC and the non-PC fractions contributed to the antioxidant capacity and CAP of ACE. In contrast to the COX-2 inhibition seen in the presence of PC, the inhibition of enzymatic activity of the inflammatory mediator Lipoxygenase was associated specifically with the non-PC fraction of ACE. Inhibition of formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was evaluated using polymorphonuclear cells from healthy human donors. The inhibition of ROS formation was seen for both thePC and non-PC fractions, with ACE showing the most robust effect. The effects of PC, non-PC, and ACE on clotting and clot lysing was tested using a modified Euglobulin fibrinolytic assay in vitro. In the presence of PC, non-PC, and ACE, the time for clot formation and lysis was not affected; however, the clots were significantly more robust. This effect was statistically significant ( p < .05) at doses between 125–500 μg/mL, and returned to baseline at lower doses. Both PC and the non-PC fraction contributed to the antioxidant properties and anti-inflammatory effects, without a negative impact on blood clotting in vitro. This suggests a potential benefit for the consumable ACE extract in assisting the reduction of inflammatory conditions.
