<P>Novel triangular ring resonators combining extremely small multimode-interference (MMI) coupler, low loss total internal reflection (TIR) mirrors, and semiconductor optical amplifiers are reported for the first time. The MMI length of 90 microm is among the shortest reported. The incidence angle of the TIR mirror inside the resonator is 22 degrees. A free-spectral range of approximately 2 nm is observed near 1550 nm along with an on-off ratio of 17 dB. The triangular resonators with a sharp angle are very attractive components due to their promise of compact size and high levels of integration. Therefore, large numbers of resonators can be integrated on a chip to increase functionality in future optical wavelength division multiplexing system.</P>

<P>A persistent problem with solution processes is dissolution of the first deposited layer by the solution of the second deposited layer. Because the energy barrier between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels of Poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-(4,4-(N-(4-s-butylphenyl)diphenylamine)] (TFB) used as a first hole transporting layer (HTL) and poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-co-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) used as a light-emitting layer (EML) is so large, poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) was inserted as a second HTL between TFB and F8BT to facilitate hole injection from the TFB layer into the F8BT layer. In this paper, we demonstrate the effect of bilayer HTLs in solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using thermally-annealed TFB. The characteristics of OLEDs with HTLs, with and without thermally annealed TFB, are compared. The maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of an OLED, with thermally-annealed TFB and spin-coated PVK on the TFB used as bilayer HTLs, increases significantly to 0.617%, whereas the EQE of the OLED, without thermally annealed TFB and PVK spin-coated directly on the as-coated TFB, is greatly reduced to 0.195%. This result indicates that insertion of PVK between thermally annealed TFB and F8BT layers can facilitate easy hole injection from the TFB layer into the F8BT layer and enhance OLED performance.</P>

<P>This study investigated the molecular mechanism by which Bax inhibitor 1 (BI1) abrogates the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Electron uncoupling between NADPH-dependent cytochrome P450 reductase (NPR) and cytochrome P450 2E1 (P450 2E1) is a major source of ROS on the ER membrane. ER stress produced ROS accumulation and lipid peroxidation of the ER membrane, but BI1 reduced this accumulation. Under ER stress, expression of P450 2E1 in control cells was upregulated more than in BI1-overexpressing cells. In control cells, inhibiting P450 2E1 through chemical or siRNA approaches suppressed ROS accumulation, ER membrane lipid peroxidation and the resultant cell death after ER stress. However, it had little effect in BI1-overexpressing cells. In addition, BI1 knock down also increased ROS accumulation and expression of P450 2E1. In a reconstituted phospholipid membrane containing purified BI1, NPR and P450 2E1, BI1 dose-dependently decreased the production of ROS. BI1 bound to NPR with higher affinity than P450 2E1. Furthermore, BI1 overexpression reduced the interaction of NPR and P450 2E1, and decreased the catalytic activity of P450 2E1, suggesting that the flow of electrons from NPR to P450 2E1 can be modulated by BI1. In summary, BI1 reduces the accumulation of ROS and the resultant cell death through regulating P450 2E1.</P>
여대생의 영양섭취와 혈중 성호르몬, 지질농도 및 철분지표

Background : Many epidemiological and observational studies show that distorted body image of normal body weight is widespread among Korean young female. This study was performed to evaluate the prevalence of overweight and underweight of young female and, to compare nutrient intakes, body composition, serum biochemical indices(lipids, MDA: Malondialdehyde, TAS: Total Antioxidant Status, iron indices and sex hormone) with different BMI groups. Methods : Thirty-nine university students live in Seoul were engaged in this program and divided into 3 groups according to their BMI on the basis of IOTF guideline (UW : underweight group; BMI<18.5, NW : normal body weight group; 18.5≤BMI<23.0, OW : overweight group; BMI≥23.0). Data on dietary intakes, body composition and serum indices were obtained from 3 groups. All the variables of the differences among 3 groups were assessed on the basis of the body weight. Results : Using IOTF guideline the prevalence of underweight, normal weight and overweight in young female were 23%, 62%, 15% respectively. Protein intake of UW was significantly lower than that of the NW(p<0.005). But intakes of energy and the other nutrient were not significantly different among BMI groups. Vit. C and folate intake were 63% and 48.2% of KDRIs. Serum indices were not significantly different. Conclusions : From our results, we suggested that the nutritional status of fiber, Vit C and folate status of young female could be improved by the multidisciplinary nutrition education program and action guideline.

<P>This paper reports a new method for fabrication of microlens arrays using a polyoxymethylene (POM) mold with concave-type cylindrical holes prepared by mechanical-micro milling without photolithography and wet etching processes. Microlens arrays were fabricated by a replica molding process using the concave-type POM mold. A polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) thin film was deposited onto the POM mold and a concave PMMA template was prepared by blowing a nitrogen gas stream onto the thin PMMA film suspended on the micro POM mold. Microlens arrays were fabricated by pouring ultraviolet (UV)-epoxy onto the concave PMMA template and curing the UV-epoxy under UV light. Two types of microlens arrays, one with a hemispherical structure and one with a truncated-cone-type structure, were fabricated. After attaching the hemispherical microlens array onto organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the OLEDs was enhanced by approximately 56.5%. This work provides a valuable method for easy fabrication of microlens arrays with diameters of several hundred micrometers.</P>

An alkaline ribonuclease (pH optimum 8) has been purified in a five step procedure and a ribonuclease inhibitor (pH optimum 7.6) has been purified by affinity chromatography on Sepharose-RNase A from bovine brain. The purified proteins appear homogeneous on SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The data from gel filtration and SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis indicate a molecular weight of 27,000 for alkaline ribonuclease and 51,000 for the inhibitor. By gel filtration, the molecular size of the ribonuclease-inhibitor complex is 75,000, indicative of 1:1 binding on a molecular basis. The inhibition of the action of alkaline ribonuclease on yeast RNA by the inhibitor is noncompetitive with a K_i of 0.9 nM. The alkaline ribonuclease activity either in crude extracts or through the purification steps was affected by p-chloromercuribenzoic acid. Essentially no free alkaline ribonuclease activity could be detected in bovine brain homogenate in the absence of p-chloromercuribenzoic acid. Inactivation of the inhibitor by sulfhydryl reagents causes the dissociation of the ribonuclease-inhibitor complex into active ribonuclease and inactive inhibitor. Blocking of lysine residue(s) of the alkaline RNase by a chemical modification inactivated the RNase activity, and interrupted a formation of RNase-inhibitor complex. It indicates that the lysine residue(s) of the alkaline RNase might be crucial not only for the alkaline RNase activity but also for the binding of the inhibitor to the enzyme.
