Method for Automated Selection of the Trabecular Area in Digital Periapical Radiographic Images Using Morphological Operations

        Enny Itje Sela,Reza Pulungan,Rini Widyaningrum,Rurie Ratna Shantiningsih 대한의료정보학회 2019 Healthcare Informatics Research Vol.25 No.3

Objectives: The aim of this study is to propose a method that automatically select the trabecular bone area in digital periapical radiographic images using a sequence of morphological operations. Methods: The study involved 50 digital periapical radiographic images of women aged from 36 to 58 years old. The proposed method consists of three stages: teeth detection, trabecular identification, and validation. A series of morphological operations—top-hat and bottom-hat filtering, automatic thresholding, closing, labeling, global thresholding, and image subtraction—are performed to automatically obtain the trabecular bone area in images. For validation, the results of the proposed method were compared with those of two dentists pixel by pixel. Three parameters were used in the validation: trabecular area, percentage of agreed area, and percentage of disagreed area. Results: The proposed method obtains the trabecular bone area in a polygon. The obtained trabecular bone area is usually larger than that of previous studies, but is usually smaller than the dentists’. On average over all images, the trabecular area produced by the proposed method is 5.83% smaller than that identified by dentists. Furthermore, the average percentage of agreed area and the average percentage of disagreed area of the proposed method against the dentists’ results were 75.22% and 8.75%, respectively. Conclusions: The shape of the trabecular bone area produced by the proposed method is similar and closer to that identified by dentists. The method, which consists of only simple morphological operations on digital periapical radiographic images, can be considered for selecting the trabecular bone area automatically.

Optimum plant density and harvest age for maximizing productivity and minimizing competition in a Calliandra short-rotation-coppice plantation in West Java, Indonesia

        Widyati Enny,Sutiyono,Darwo,Mindawati Nina,Yulianti Mira,Prameswari Diana,Abdulah Lutfy,Yuniarti Karnita,Baral Himlal 한국산림과학회 2022 Forest Science And Technology Vol.18 No.1

To produce large volumes of biomass for implementing its green energy policy, the Government of Indonesia has issued a short rotation energy plantation program for a num- ber of tree species including Calliandra calothyrsus (Meissn.). Optimum density and prompt harvesting are needed to maximise productivity, but information regarding both factors is insufficient. This study aimed to investigate the optimum growth spacing and ideal felling age to produce the largest volumes of biomass both economically and sustainably. Experiments were arranged on one hectare of land, which was divided into four plots with different plant spacing treatments (1 1.5 m; 1.5 1.5 m; 2 1.5 m; and 2 2 m). Growth and yield observations were carried out on plants aged 12, 18, and 24 months in each plot, with 30 sample trees left for growth observations and ten sample trees cut at each of the three ages after planting. This resulted in a total of 240 samples from the 2,710 trees planted. Trees were felled at 50 cm from the soil surface, and the resulting stools were left to regrow. A year after felling, resulting coppices, were observed and cut. Growth, productiv- ity and calorific value were studied for both ‘primary’ and ‘coppiced’ wood. Study results demonstrate that competition between plants strongly determines the growth and product- ivity of ‘primary’ wood. The plot with the densest plant spacing had the lowest nutrient con- tent for almost all soil nutrients. Higher plant density showed higher competition index values, and resulted in fewer and smaller diameter stems emerging from stools, and lower biomass productivity. Competition index values, which increased with plant age, can be used as an indicator for determining harvest timing. Productivity increased by up to 15% fol- lowing development as a coppice plantation. Optimum wood productivity and greatest economy came from parent stands with plant spacing of 2 2 m, harvested at 18 months old and coppiced. This treatment yielded an average biomass/tree of primary wood 7.2 kg and coppice wood 8.22 kg, respectively, with lignin content of approximately 22%, and calor- ific value of around 18,807 kJ. These values match biomass energy requirements for feed- stock for electricity generation. Harvesting at 24 months showed no significant increases in productivity, lignin content, or calorific value.

The Predicting Power of Self-Efficacy on Students’ Argumentative Writing Quality

I Dewa Gede Rat Dwiyana Putra,Ali Saukah,Yazid Basthomi,Enny Irawati 아시아영어교육학회 2020 The Journal of Asia TEFL Vol.17 No.2

This study aims to investigate the relationships among the aspects of writing self-efficacy and students’ writing quality in the argumentative writing domain. Multiple linear regression analysis is applied to reveal how writing self-efficacy, in the aspect of ideation, convention and self-regulation, predicts the students’ argumentative writing performance. The participants in this study are the fourth semester students of English language teaching department in Mahasaraswati University Denpasar enrolled in argumentative writing class (N = 135; 4 classes). The results indicate that convention selfefficacy made the largest significant contribution to students’ writing quality, followed by selfregulation self-efficacy. Nonetheless, the ideation self-efficacy gives the lowest insignificant contribution to students’ writing quality, although its items have been already adjusted to argumentative writing. These findings suggest that the students’ perception on their ability to express ideas in an appropriate rule of written expression would best reflect their written product quality. Therefore, EFL teachers should still consider providing intensive assistance on writing conventions for their students, because students would rely more on the rules of written expression to be able to produce a high-quality writing. Besides, other researches are required to corroborate these findings in another writing domains to extend the body of knowledge of writing and writing self-efficacy.

Operation of dry distillation process on the production of radionuclide 131I at Puspiptek area Serpong Indonesia, 2021 to 2022

        Chaidir Pratama,Daya Agung Sarwono,Ahid Nurmanjaya,Abidin Abidin,Triyatna Fani,Moch Subechi,Endang Sarmini,Enny Lestari,Yanto Yanto,Kukuh Eka Prasetya,Maskur Maskur,Fernanto Rindiyantono,Indra Saptiam Korean Nuclear Society 2024 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.56 No.4

131I is a fission product produced in a nuclear reactor by irradiating tellurium dioxide, with a half-life of 8.02 day. The most important and widely used method for making 131I is irradiation using a nuclear reactor and post-irradiation followed by dry distillation. The advantage of the dry distillation process is that the process and the equipment are relatively simple, namely TeO2 (m.p. 750 ℃), which can withstand heating during reactor irradiation. Based on TeO2 irradiation by neutron following the technique of dry distillation was explained for production of 131I on a large scale. A dry distillation followed the radioisotope production operation using the 30 MW GA Siwabessy nuclear reactor to meet national demand. TeO2 targets are 25 and 50 g irradiated for 87-100 h. The resulting 131I activity is 20.29339-368.50335GBq. According to the requirements imposed on the radionuclide purity of the preparation, the contribution of 131I training in the resulting preparation was not less than 99.9 %

Frontline rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and prednisone with bortezomib (VR-CAP) or vincristine (R-CHOP) for non-GCB DLBCL

        Offner, Fritz,Samoilova, Olga,Osmanov, Evgenii,Eom, Hyeon-Seok,Topp, Max S.,Raposo, Joã,o,Pavlov, Viacheslav,Ricci, Deborah,Chaturvedi, Shalini,Zhu, Eugene,van de Velde, Helgi,Enny, Christopher American Society of Hematology 2015 Blood Vol.126 No.16

<P>This phase 2 study evaluated whether substituting bortezomib for vincristine in frontline rituximab plus cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (R-CHOP) therapy could improve efficacy in non-germinal center B-cell-like diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (non-GCB DLBCL), centrally confirmed by immunohistochemistry (Hans method). In total, 164 patients were randomized 1:1 to receive six 21-day cycles of rituximab 375 mg/m2, cyclophosphamide 750 mg/m2, and doxorubicin 50 mg/m2, all IV day 1, prednisone 100 mg/m2 orally days 1-5, plus either bortezomib 1.3 mg/m2 IV days 1, 4, 8, 11 (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and prednisone with bortezomib [VR-CAP]; n = 84) or vincristine 1.4 mg/m2 (maximum 2 mg) IV day 1 (R-CHOP; n = 80). There were no significant differences between VR-CAP and R-CHOP in complete response rate (64.5%, 66.2%; odds ratio [OR], 0.91; <I>P</I> = .80), overall response rate (93.4%, 98.6%; OR, 0.21; <I>P</I> = .11), progression-free survival (hazard ratio [HR], 1.12; <I>P</I> = .76), or overall survival (HR, 0.89; <I>P</I> = .75). Rates of grade ≥3 adverse events (AEs; 88%, 89%), serious AEs (38%, 34%), discontinuations due to AEs (7%, 3%), and deaths due to AEs (2%, 5%) were similar with VR-CAP and R-CHOP. Grade ≥3 peripheral neuropathy rates were 6% and 3%, respectively. VR-CAP did not improve efficacy vs R-CHOP in non-GCB DLBCL. This trial was registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as #NCT01040871.</P>

      • Multimodal Chronotopes: Embodying Ancestral Time on Quichua Morning Radio

Georgia Ennis 한국외국어대학교 HK 세미오시스 연구센터 2019 Signs and Society Vol.7 No.1

This article considers the multimodal enregisterment of an ancestral time-space in indigenous-language media production. Beginning from the insight that chronotopes engage semiotically mediated, subjective experiences of time, space, and social personhood (Wirtz 2016; Hartikainen 2017), I use ethnographic evidence from lowland Ecuadorian Quichua (Kichwa) radio production and reception to explore the semiotic recalibration of the wayusa upina, the guayusa-drinking hours as a register of media performance aimed at cultural revival. Identified as one of the most significant and endangered spaces for transmitting cultural and linguistic knowledge, the nondiscursive signs and material practices used in multimodal lowland Quichua radio productions reconstitute the ancestral guayusa-drinking hours, indexically linking it to the voices and knowledge of still living elders. In doing so, these programs attempt to establish a counterchronotope of remembering, which contrasts with a widely circulating chronotope of endangerment.

Sociocultural Influences on Middle School Male Students’ Body Image in Physical Activity

        홍덕기,Catherine D. Ennis 한국스포츠교육학회 2017 한국스포츠교육학회지 Vol.24 No.1

The purpose of this study was to examine ways in which adolescent males constructed their body image through sociocultural influences in physical activity. Interviews and visual diaries were collected from eight eighth grade males in two middle schools located in the southeastern United States. The data were inductively and deductively analyzed using constant comparison. From the data analysis, three categories emerged: media influence, significant others, and indifference to sociocultural influences. The data were interpreted using three themes of hidden acceptance, lack of concern, and critical awareness. The results showed that sociocultural influences (e.g., media, parents, and peers) appear to impact adolescent males’ conceptions of body image and their physical activity preferences.
