        Validation of Combs prognostic scoring system in Indian recurrent glioma patients treated with re-radiation

        Purpose: Retrospective audit of recurrent glioma patients treated by different fractionation schedules and to validate the modified Combs prognostic score in Indian patient cohort. Materials and Methods: Between Jan 2009 and June 2022, 66 recurrent gliomas patients treated with standard adjuvant treatment—radiation (RT) ± temozolomide (chemotherapy)—and re-treated with RT (± chemotherapy) were categorized as per modified Combs prognostic criteria and outcomes were compared. Results: Sixty-six patients with recurrent gliomas who received reirradiation (re-RT) were audited—53% males; 61% Karnofsky performance status (KPS) ≥80 at time of re-RT; median age 41.5 years (range, 6 to 70 years); 67% <50 years; primary histology low-grade glioma in 33% ; grade III 27%, grade IV 40%; initial median dose of 60 Gy equivalent dose in 2 Gy fractions (EQD2); maximum safe resection at recurrence 41%; mean and median follow-up 78 ± 51 months and 66 months. Mean time interval between RT was 46.4 ± 39 months. Mean planning target volume (PTV) volume in conventional RT (Conv-RT), hypofractionated RT (Hypo-RT), and ultra-hypofractionated RT (UF-RT) was 226.1 ± 140.7 mL, 162.8 ± 123.3 mL, and 143.3 ± 145.8 mL. Mean dose for Conv-RT, Hypo-RT, and UF-RT was 50 Gy (range, 40 to 60), 31 Gy (range, 20 to 40), and 20 Gy (range, 10 to 30). Mean overall survival (OS) in Conv-RT, Hypo-RT, and UF-RT cohort was 18.8 months (range, 2.4 to 76.8); 6.6 months (range, 2 to 17.4), and 13.9 months (range, 3 to 131.9). Median OS as per Combs criteria were 16.6 months (Group a), 24.6 months (Group b), 4.6 months (Group c), and 3 months (Group d). Significant survival benefit was with good KPS score (KPS >80 vs. <80; 20.46 vs. 5.25 months; p < 0.001), patients receiving salvage chemotherapy (20.46 vs. 6.96 months; p = 0.001), and patients received re-RT biological equivalent dose (BED3) >80 Gy (16.62 vs. 5.48 months; p = 0.03). Median overall survival (OS) in our patient cohort and Combs cohort in Group a was 16.6 and 19.5 months; Group b was 24.6 and 11.3 months; Group c was 4.7 and 8.1 months, and Group d was 2 and 5.5 months, respectively. Six months survival in our patient cohort and Combs cohort in Groups a, b, c, d were 100%, 92%, 34%, 17% and 94%, 79%, 70%, 41%, respectively. Twelve months survival in our patient cohort and Combs cohort in Groups a, b, c, d were 88%, 74%, 22%, 0% and 88%, 47%, 22%, 7%, respectively. Conclusion: Modified Combs prognostic factors predicts OS and is applicable in Indian subcontinent patient population.

      • Evidence of Multimeric Forms of HSP70 with Phosphorylation on Serine and Tyrosine Residues - Implications for Roles of HSP70 in Detection of GI Cancers

        Background: Heat-shock protein70 (HSP70) are intracellular protein chaperones, with emerging evidence of their association with various diseases. We have previously reported significantly elevated plasma-HSP70 (pHSP70) in pancreatic cancer. Current methods of pHSP70 isolation are ELISA-based which lack specificity due to cross-reactivity by similarities in the amino-acid sequence in regions of the protein backbone resulting in overestimated HSP70 value. Materials and Methods: This study was undertaken to develop a methodology to capture all isoforms of pHSP70, while further defining their tyrosine and serine phosphorylation status. Results: The methodology included gel electrophoresis on centrifuged supernatant obtained from plasma incubated with HSP70 antibody-coupled beads. After blocking non-specific binding sites, blots were immunostained with monoclonal-antibody specific for human-HSP70, phosphoserine and phosphotyrosine. Conclusions: Our novel immunocapture approach has distinct advantages over the commercially available methods of pHSP70 quantification by allowing isolation of molecular aggregates of HSP70 with additional ability to precisely distinguish phosphorylation state of HSP70 molecules at serine and tyrosine residues.

        <P><I>meso</I>-Ethynyl extended aryl-picket calix[4]pyrroles 2 and 3 are designed and synthesized by directly anchoring arylethynyl groups at diametrically opposed <I>meso</I>-positions. The critical roles of direct ethynyl linkers are manifested through the isolation of unexpected host-anion conformers of <I>meso</I>-arylethynyl calix[4]pyrroles and a significant enhancement in halide binding affinities.</P>

        A Comprehensive and Critical Assessment on the Efficiency of Natural and Synthetic Adsorbents for the Removal of Recalcitrant Malachite Green from Water: Present Level and Future Perspectives

        A serious hazard to humankind has resulted from the uncontrolled use of dyes in numerous industrial areas, including textiles, paints, paper, and personal care goods. Over the past two decades, numerous research teams have contributed to fi nding a suitable remedy for such dye pollution. Depending on the restrictions of the experiment, the report shows varied degrees of elimination of water-contaminated sources. Malachite green is a recalcitrant dye that augments numerous health problems and environmental concerns. This review paper provides a critical overview and comparative analysis of the malachite green (MG) dye removal performance provided by natural and synthetic adsorbents under varying conditions. Natural adsorbents, notably those derived from plants, are renowned for being readily available, aff ordable, non-toxic, sustainable, bio-degradable, and enjoy an edge as environmentally friendly. On the other hand, synthetic adsorbents have an advantage over natural ones due to their high surface area, advanced manufacturing processes, high effi ciency, water stability, and specifi city. The impacts of numerous physicochemical variables, kinetics, and isotherms on adsorption are covered in detail in this review, along with any associated thermodynamic interpretations. The interpretation of the mechanistic forces behind the adsorbate-adsorbent binding has been criticized. A comparison of relative effi ciencies between the natural and artifi cial adsorbents adds some fl avor. Future perspectives for upcoming researchers have been proposed, along with potential fi xes. This critical analysis shows that among all the methods currently in use, adsorption is the most straightforward, environmentally benefi cial, economically viable, and sustainable method for treating wastewater in a meaningful manner. The integrated process still requires more study and development, optimization, and practical application to establish a holistically design variety of dye treatment methods.

        Effect of Supplementation of Rice Straw with Leucaena leucocephala and Prosopis cineraria Leaves on Nutrient Utilization by Goats

        The potential of Leucaena leucocephala and Prosopis cineraria leaves as nitrogen supplements ($16g/kg\;W^{0.75}/d$) to improve the utilization of a basal diet of rice straw by goats was assessed in a feeding trial. Rice straw supplementation with forage oats (Avena sativa) was fed as a control diet. DMI, $g/kgW^{0.75}$ of rice straw by goats receiving Leucaena was significantly (p<0.05) higher followed by Prosopis and oat fodder. The supplementation of Leucaena improved the digestibility coefficient of DM, OM, CP, NDF and ADF nutrient density. Goats on Prosopis or oat fodder supplemented straw responded similarly in terms of nutrient utilization. The intake ($g/kgW^{0.75}$) of DCP, TDN and nitrogen balance of goats were significantly higher (p<0.05) when Leucaena was fed. It is suggested that the Leucaena may be a useful N-supplement in areas where livestock are fed poor quality crop residues.

      • Effect of some new generation insecticides on the population abundance of aphid and different beneficial insects in mustard crop

        <P>The present study evaluated the efficacy of some new generation insecticides namely Clothianidin 48 SC, Fenpyroximate 5 SC, Pyridaben 20 WP and Methoxyphenozide 24 SC along with a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, Fenpropathrin 20 EC against mustard aphid and their effects on beneficial insects i.e. syrphid flies and foraging honeybees during 2015 - 2016 in Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur, Bangladesh. Tested six treatments were: Clothianidin 48 SC 1ml l-1, Fenpyroximate 5 SC 0.25 ml l-1, Pyridaben 20 WP 1g l-1, Methoxyphenozide 24 SC 1ml l-1 , Fenpropathrin 20 EC 1ml l-1 and an untreated control, replicated three times in RCBD. It was found that, Methoxyphenozide 24 SC was found to be the most effective against aphid offering lower aphid population (1.42/ top 10 cm central twig) at 7 days after spraying (DAS) which was statistically identical to Clothianidin 48 SC (1.50/top 10 cm central twig). Among the insecticides, Methoxyphenozide 24 SC was also found to be safer to the populations of syrphid flies revealing flight activity of 6.85 adults (plot/5 min) and honeybees of 8.82 workers (plot/5 min), respectively at 7 DAS. Whereas, Clothianidin 48 SC and Pyridaben 25 WP treated plots were found to be highly toxic to these beneficial insects. Consequently, the highest yield was obtained from Methoxyphenozide 24 SC (1.55 t/ha) followed by Fenpyroximate 5 SC (1.42 t/ha) treated plots.Bangladesh J. Agril.         Promoting electrocatalytic overall water splitting with nanohybrid of transition metal nitride-oxynitride

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Excellent Electrochemical water splitting with remarkable durability can provide a solution for the increasing global energy demand. Herein, we report an efficient and stable overall water splitting system; cobalt nitride-vanadium oxynitride nanohybrid, prepared from the polyaniline (PANI) mediated synthetic protocol. This nanohybrid produces significantly higher water oxidation, proton reduction as well as overall water splitting performances compared to the cobalt nitride, vanadium oxynitride or even noble metal catalyst systems. Only 263 mV overpotential is required to reach 10 mA cm<SUP>−2</SUP> current density for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 118 mV for the same in case of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Finally, the bifunctional nanohybrid has been explored for the alkaline overall water splitting at cell voltage of 1.64 V to attain 10 mA cm<SUP>−2</SUP> current density with long term stability for 100 h. Post-catalytic analyses have revealed the formation of defect rich amorphous CoO<SUB>x</SUB> sites leading to high OER activity, whereas crystalline Co(OH)<SUB>2</SUB>-Co<I>δ</I> <SUP>+</SUP>-N (0 < <I>δ</I> < 2) centres are generated after HER. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a nitride-oxynitride nanohybrid system employed for the overall water splitting, and its superior activity and durability recommend its potential for practical utilization.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> First report on metal nitride-oxynitride nanohybrid for water splitting. </LI> <LI> Fabrication of transition metal nitride without direct use of ammonia gas. </LI> <LI> Only 263 and 118 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm<SUP>−2</SUP> current density for OER and HER, respectively for the nanohybrid. </LI> <LI> Superior performance and stability than commercial RuO<SUB>2</SUB> and Pt-C couple in two-electrode alkaline water splitting reaction. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Isolation and Structure Elucidation of New Pentacyclic Triterpene Acid from the Leaves of Rubus ellipticus
