We investigated the effects of single administration of Korean earthworm(Lamnodrilus gotai Hatai) juice (KEJ) on blood pressure and spontaneous motor activity in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats. We report that KEJ lowered blood pressure and spontaneous motor activity in SHR.
Antimicrobial Activities of Volatile Essential Oils from Korean Aromatic Plants
Shin, Kuk-Hyun,Chi, Hyung-Joon,Lim, Soon-Sung,Cho, Seon-Haeng,Moon, Hyung-In,Yu, Jae-Hyeun The Korean Society of Pharmacognosy 1997 Natural Product Sciences Vol.3 No.2
Volatile essential oils obtained by steam distillation from 55 plant parts of 42 species of representative aromatic plants newly collected in Korean peninsula have been evaluated for antimicrobial activity against 5 microorganisms. The essential oils derived from 15 plant parts and 9 plant parts were found to exhibit very strong antimicrobial activities by more than 95% inhibition at 100 ${\mu}g/ml$ against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively. Essential oil components such as l-limonene, ${\beta}-myrcene$, linalool, ${\gamma}-terpinene$, ${\alpha},{\beta}-phellandrene$, 1,8-cineole, l-borneol and bornylacetate, as a whole, have primarily contributed to the manifestation of the antimicrobial activity.

Chemical carcinogenesis is associated with the increase of intracellular polyamine levels, and 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced mouse epidermal ODC activity are essential to skin tumor promotion by TPA. Therefore, for the discovery of new cancer chemopreventive agents, we have evaluated about 73 kinds of natural products to study inhibitory effects against ODC activity induced by TPA in T24 cell culture system. The total methanol extracts of plants fractionated into three layers (hexane, ethyl acetate and water layer) were tested and the hexane fraction of Angelica gigas $(root\;bark,\;IC_{50}:\;7.4\;{\mu}g/ml)$ and the ethyl acetate fraction of Corydalis ternata $(root,\;IC_{50}:\;7.5\;{\mu}g/ml)$ were the most effective on the inhibition of TPA-induced ODC activity, These active fractions are under investigation with further sequential fractionation using column chromatography.
Antiinflammatory Evaluation of Leucas lavandulaefolia Rees. Extract
Saha, Kakali,Mukherjee, Pulok K.,Das, J.,Mandal, Subhash C.,Saha, B.P.,Pal, M. The Korean Society of Pharmacognosy 1996 Natural Product Sciences Vol.2 No.2
The antiinflammatory activity of the methanol extract of Leucas lavandulaefolia Rees was evaluated on different experimental models of inflammation in rats. The extract has been found to possess significant, inhibitory activity against carrageenin, histamine, serotonin, and dextran induced hind paw oedema in rats. The effect produced by extract was comparable to that of phenylbutazone and a prototype, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agent.

Lipase specific activity in cocoa beans varied from 70 to 40 ${\mu}mol/min/mg$ protein during six days of fermentation. At the end of this period most parts of the cotyledon has turned to brown color which would be more distinguishable after drying. The beans were slightly swollen thus causing its testa to disintegrate. During fermentation there was a decrease in pH from 6.4 to 5.8. Whereas the percentage of acetic acid was increased by 0.04% of wet weight beans on the third day but decreased progressively with time.

Four polymethoxyfavones were isolated from the leaves of Citrus deliciosa, three of which (nobiletin, 5-O-demethylnobiletin, and tangeritin) are bioactive. The fourth (7,4'-dihydroxy-5,6,8,3'-tetramethoxyflavone) is reported for the first time in the genus Citrus and is a potential chemotaxonomic marker. The structures of these flavones were confirmed by analysing their spectral data and comparison with similar compounds. The previously reported $^{13}C$ NMR assignment of 5-O-demethylnobiletin has been revised on the basis of 2D NMR experiments (HETCOR, COSY, and COLOC). The chemotaxonomic value of the present finding is verified.

Evaluation of plant extracts that might inhibit hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication was performed to find potent anti-HBV agents. Eighty-five species of plants from forty-three families were tested for their anti-HBV activities using HBV-producing HepG2-derived 2.2.15 cells. The anti-HBV activity of plant extracts was measured by slot blot hybridization technique and cytotoxicity was determined by crystal violet staining procedure. All plants were extracted with methanol and the extracts were partitioned into n-hexane, ethyl acetate and aqueous layer. The ethyl acetate fractions of Rhus verniciflua $(stem:\;EC_{50},\;8.2{\mu}g/ml;\;CC_{50},\;9.4{\mu}g/ml)$, Gastrodia elata $(root:\;EC_{50},\;17.7{\mu}g/ml;\;CC_{50},\;>20{\mu}g/ml)$, Raphanus sativus $(seeds:\;EC_{50},\;17.3{\mu}g/ml;\;CC_{50},\;>20{\mu}g/ml)$, and Angelica gigas $(root:\;EC_{50},\;8.3{\mu}g/ml;\;CC_{50},\;15.6{\mu}g/ml)$ revealed the anti-HBV activity in 2.2.15 cell culture system and these fractions are under the process of further sequential fractionation by column chromatography to find the active principles against HBV.
Novel Withanolides from the Flowers of Datura tatula
Srivastava, Anjani,Manickam, M.,Sinha-Bagchia, A.,Sinhaa, S.C.,Ray, A.B. The Korean Society of Pharmacognosy 1996 Natural Product Sciences Vol.2 No.1
Three new withanolides, designated as withatatulins B, C, and D, were isolated from the fresh flowers of Datura tatula Linn. Detailed spectral analysis of these compounds permitted advancement of their structures respectively, as $5{\beta},6{\beta}-epoxy-12{\beta}$,21-dihydroxy-1-oxo-witha-2,24-dienolide (2), $6{\beta},12{\beta},21-trihydroxy-1-oxowitha$ 2, 4,24-trienolide (3) and $5{\beta},6{\beta},12{\beta}$,21-tetrahydroxy-1-oxo-witha-2,24-dienolide (4a). Withanolides with oxygen functions both at 12 and 21-positions are rare and first reported from Datura species.
